As I posted on FB, at one point did Paul Di Resta seriously just say "two of the best drivers we've ever seen will come together at the end of this grand Prix"? Sorry, how many world titles has Verstappen won? Muppet. The amount of talking up of Verstappen is unbelievable right now, he hasn't even won anything yet!

I'm glad to see a better championship contender this year (even though he acts like an entitled whingebag) but I SO want Hamilton to win his 8th just to cement the fact he is the greatest driver ever - which some people still have a hard time accepting..

He was behind Dani Rico on poles too previously. Qualifying it seems isn't his strongest point.

RBR were lucky that the early gusty winds dropped as their decision to take a lot of wing off the cars this weekend made them very unstable early on.

Another solid performance from Perez. RBR might just have found the wingman they’ve wanted for Max for the last 2-3 years.

Would’ve paid good money to have been a fly on the wall in the Merc de-brief given today’s strategy failure.

Even before the last race which he won, Perez had out formed Gasly and Albon on points.

Vettel and Alonso also comfortably beat their teammates again, and leading them nicely in the championship, despite their initially poor starts to the season. Similarly Dani Ric was looking better this race too. Seems they are starting to get the hang of their new cars/teams now.

I think Perez is slightly better driver than Albon with experience & consistency, similar pace, but have to take into account when comparing on points that this years Red Bull is much more competitive.

Quite. I think Max is something special - but he still needs to prove it. I really hope Ferrari can give Leclerc a decent car in the coming years, and that Mercedes is still good when Russell gets his seat there. For me, those three have the makings of being the greatest driver of their generation, but time will tell which - if any - of them actually has what it takes to carve out their legend in the sport.

True, but Pérez is also closer to Max on pace. It took him a few races to get there - Imola quali aside - but he's now about where you'd expect the second driver to a teammate like Max to be. Albon never managed that.

Everybody always gets over-excited about young drivers that win a few races. It's essentially looking into the future, into a crystal ball and going "gosh look how good he is now, imagine what he'll be in 5 years time when he's won 5 championships". Conveniently forgetting that he may entirely lose his edge, have a crap car for 3 seasons, or something else. It's all hype.

Well what more do you want Max to do? He's never had a title winning car but you want to down play his ability because of it? Bizarre. He's clearly one of the very best drivers on the grid. He's destroyed his team mates year after year. He's clearly exceptional.

It’s clear to me anyway that he’s improved since then and managed to reduce the mistakes too. I’d certainly have him in my top three drivers right now.

Yeah, he's improved a lot. I think he's second best right now, but I also think it's too early to really judge him against the others of his generation. Leclerc's second season was stunning but he needs to learn to manage his tyres better, and I think Russell will prove to the best of the three but until he gets a regular drive in a car which isn't a potato, how can we tell? Whatever happens, I think we're looking at an extremely exciting crop of young drivers both in F1 right now, and waiting in the wings for the coming years.

Well for starters he could win at least one championship right? My horror was that Paul Di Resta seemed to be calling him one of the best ever ! I don't doubt Max's ability but he is very far from proving he's equal to Lewis. Logically he'll need minimum eight years to do that right?

No because you're confusing having the best car with being the best driver. This is formula 1, if you don't have a title capable car then it doesn't matter how good you are you'll never be world champion. Doesn't mean you're not one of the very best drivers like Max has consistently shown the last few years.

He has a lot of praise because he has earned it for his exceptional talent.

And if he doesn't win this year is it because of his "exceptional talent"? Or are we still saying he's the best driver, just in a slower car? Just want to make sure I know the party line. Thanks :p

Of course I know you need the fastest car to win. Perhaps a lot of talent in F1 is getting yourself into the best team, at the right team? Something Lewis has done very well, especially the switch to Mercedes. That stuff isn't luck.

You're talking a load of rubbish. You think being in a faster car means you are a better driver or if you haven't won a world championship then you can't be up there labelled as one of the best drivers. Completely deluded and the Lewis bias is obvious.

Yeah, I can't wait to see George, Lando, LeGlerg and Max in decent cars... TBH I'd love to see them in F2 together (same spec).. cos we know George beat Lando but Max skipped F2 and LeClerc was pretty incredible in F2

Doesn't mean you're not one of the very best drivers like Max has consistently shown the last few years.

It wasn't that long ago that Max earned himself the "Crashstappen" tag. He crashed so much that he threatened to headbutt the next journalist that asked him about it, people made "has Max crashed yet" websites about him, and he threw away good results with stupid mistakes like tangling with Ocon. I'd say he's got better since then, but it's only really last season and this that he's really got it together. We'll see how he holds that up across a season where he's got the chance at a championship.

He has a lot of praise because he has earned it for his exceptional talent.

So have dozens of drivers over the years; most of them don't go on to become "one of the best ever". Has Max shown he's a good driver? Yes. Has he shown he's "one of the best ever"? Not even close to it.

LeClerc was fantastic in F2. I remember going to Silverstone 2/3 years on the bounce (can't remember exactly) and watching him absolutely blast his way to wins/podiums, even in the reverse grid races.
