FTL - Faster than Light, Space Rogue - ( INDIE )

Not played it in a while. Fired it up last night for a quick blast........we all know how that ends

With a gaming hangover :)

I've finished FTL on normal a handful of times, but cannot, CANNOT, finish it with the stealth ship. The universe is littered with floating stealth ships husks, crewed by little frozen people ... :(

Have you got the layout B stealth ship yet? its a bugger to start with but once you upgrade the cloak it can take out the early ships quite happily, buying you time to get a shield.

I've been having great fun with the infinite space mod. It lets you explore the universe for as long as you want and removes the rebel fleet. It adds a bunch of new tech, new events and some incredibly powerful mini bosses in each sector that challenge even the most powerful ships. I dont think you can unlock any ships with infinite space, but i already have all of them so i'm not sure.

You can get the mod here: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3542
I also would highly recommend getting slipstream mod manager rather than Grognak's Mod Manager (GMM) which it recommends you use because it is a million times easier to use: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=17102

Don't forget to back everything up before you do any modding. I duplicated my entire FTL directory so that i have one vanilla FTL install and one Infinite space install. I have the GoG version of FTL but i'm pretty sure you can do the same with the steam version without steam getting upset

Here's my current ship, which can happily blast its way through most things, after a battle with one of the mini bosses.
Spoilered because its a late game ship, a late game boss and has some of the advanced tech

The +Bomb is exactly the same as the small bomb, but has 3 system damage and 3 personell damage. fantastic for taking out medi bays on my ship that relies mostly on my 4 crystal crew killing the enemy crew (which consisted of ~11 crewmembers and 2 anti boarding drones on the ship i just faced)

The +Burst laser is exactly the same as the Burst laser MKIII that I have (5 shots), but check out that power usage. The ship i'm facing has two of those and two of what I assume are +Heavy lasers, since they shoot two lasers each that do three damage

any advice for the infinite space mod? only managed to get to the 3rd sector so far, i keep getting caught out by ships with 4 layers of shield and not having enough firepower to punch through, I run but end up running from one to another and dying a slow death

I have the same problem sometimes and still haven't found a reliable way around it that doesn't rely on ship specialities. What can help is using a bomb weapon to disable their weapons while you are trying to run away (even the small bomb available at the start will do). You could also try upgrading your engines beyond what you can normally power in battle, and then disabling everything that isn't essential in running away (even oxygen if you need to) and diverting that power to the engines so you can run away faster.

While I remember, I must warn you not to use the federation layout A ship. there is a bug where all the mini bosses are friendly, preventing you from getting the advanced tech. The layout B ship (Nisos?) is fine.

I've only done two major runs on infinite space, both stopped by the game crashing and losing my save file :( Although I did have stupidly good ships that could blast through the mini bosses quite easily by the time it crashed so I suppose there wasn't much left to do.

On the first run I used the mantis layout 2 ship because it has a 4 man teleporter, took the small bomb as my starting gift and upgraded my shields to level 3. If i felt i could take the crew down i would bomb the medi bay fight them, knowing my shields could keep the ship alive long enough. If i didnt think i could kill the crew i would bomb the weapons and get out of there as quick as possible, praying the shield was enough.

On my other run I used the federation layout 2 ship and put the starting money into the shields and the artillery beam. If I came up against a big ship I would put as much power into shields, engines and the artillery beam as I could, relying on that beams shield piercing to kill the enemy ship, or bailing if I couldn't take the damage.

Does anyone know of a good save backup mod? I would like some way of getting my stuff back when the game crashes

have to say my experience seems similar to yours, tough starts sometimes but when you get a good ship it's just endless easy killing. on a run that's been going for around 6 hours total so far and my ships been unstoppable from the first 15 minutes of it. had 2 burst lasers II and pre igniter after about the first 10-15 jumps and it's just been killing everything after 1-2 volleys.

just seems to be either you get lucky at the start or you get annihilated to me

if you think you're killing everything off quickly with that you should try a ship with the weapon pre-igniter, a level 4 artillery beam, +burst laser, +ion blast, +beam, +heavy laser and an anti ship drone MKII. i was happily killing the mini bosses in 1-2 volleys. it was slightly embarrassing :p

honestly, yes. i was just carrying on because i wanted to get a ship with 4x +beams, 2x anti ship drone MKIIs and a level 4 artillery beam. sadly i didnt quite reach that

I'm just all lasers right now, +hull laser (3 shots, double damage), +burst crystal (3 shots shield piercing), 2 burst laser II and have +ion, +beam and +firebeam drones that I'm having fun right now. got a couple +breach missiles I'm saving up as well, might switch to 4 missiles later on. getting a full zoltan crew as well, up 2 6 so far and using the engi medbot thingy to help keep them all alive. It's still fun for now but will have to try more interesting and harder play styles to keep from getting bored I guess.

Just for those who play this game but don't know, FTL: Advanced Edition was released today, including a bunch of new features, C-type layouts for ships, one new ship and race to unlock, adjustments to some of the systems and, as if Normal wasn't difficult enough, there is now a Hard mode! :D

I can't seem to load the official site right now, but here's some information taken from the FTL Wiki:

Advanced Edition introduces several new features to the game, as well as a new sector and events.

Taken from Subset's official FTL site [2]:

Mind Control System: Temporarily turn enemies into allies. Force a boarder to repair the damage they just did, or have the enemy pilot sabotage their own helm.
Hacking System: Lockdown and disrupt enemy systems. Unique effects for each system, ranging from forcing a teleporter remove boarders to making the medbay damage instead of heal.
New Sector and Events: Our writer Tom Jubert has returned along with special guest writer Chris Avellone (of Planescape fame), who managed to find some time for us between his work on Project Eternity and Wasteland 2. They’ve been helping us add a new sector and scatter new events throughout the rest of the game.
New Weapons and Effects: Many new weapons that take advantage of new mechanics: overcharging to increase the number of volleys, stun effects to freeze crew, and area effect targeting, to name a few.
New Race: on FTL writer Tom Jubert's blog, he specifies that there will be a new race that will be closely tied to the new sector, which has been tentatively named the "Abandoned Sector".
This new race has been confirmed on Subset's official FTL site [3] to be called the "Lanius": A race that needs no oxygen to survive and drains oxygen from whatever room they are in. Other updates from this news include the new Lanius ship and its layouts, a new "layout C" for all but one of the existing ships and the new Lanius one, the ability to man the sensors and doors subsystems, the ability to rename crewmembers mid-game and differently colored individuals of the same race, to make identifying them easier.
An update[4] revealed additional information on the incoming expansion:
The ships will still be limited by 8 systems at any given time, forcing players to choose which ones they want.
Clone Bay is a system that replaces the Medbay. Clones are generated when crewmembers die as result of combat (for a small crew skill penalty) or events such as Giant Alien Spiders or Escape Pod Floating Nearby. Death can still be permanent, should the system be damaged mid-cloning. Although the replacement of the med-bay means the crew can't heal normally, the clonebay will restore a slight amount of health per jump. All type C ships come with a clone bay installed and old ships can replace their medbay for one at the store, free of charge.

Hacking is a system that sends a drone to a chosen enemy system at the cost of a drone part. Once there, the drone closes the door to the room it's hacking and grants vision inside of it to the player. The player is then allowed to start a "hacking pulse" with varied effects depending on the system. Shown examples include:
Drone Control - Causes drones to malfunction and self destruct.
Weapon Control - Causes weapons' charge up bar to decrease instead of increasing over time.
Shields - Causes the shields to decharge over time.
Teleporter - Causes the teleporter to bring enemy boarders back to their own ship.
Mind Control is a system that turns a enemy into an ally for a certain period of time. A more upgraded version of the system allows for longer mind control as well as health and combat bonuses. Vision crew is required in order to make use of the system and Slugs are immune to this effect.
Backup battery is a subsystem that grants the player 4 extra reactor power (once fully upgraded) for 30 seconds with a cooldown of 25 seconds. Being a subsystem, it can be allowed on the ship without taking room from other systems.
Other additions include a more detailed version of reward boxes, enabling the player to better know what they'll get on the outcome of an event and the addition of a hard mode, with lower scrap rewards and "other tweaks".

Happy gaming, folks. :)

Edit: There are also some nice UI changes, including buttons to save your crew's stations and order them to return to them after you've moved them around a little. Definitely useful.

Nice...

Awesome. I need to try this :)

Indeed. I've only tried it briefly, but the changes are awesome. There are more options available at some of the shops now, the new weapons and drones are interesting, and the new soundtrack is great. I may have to get that. :)

I noticed that there is now a hard mode  I'm going to get decimated...

I didn't even make it out of the first sector. The new anti-drone drones are a nightmare for playing the Engi cruiser. :(

I thought that normal was bad enough!

Stelly

Out of interest, did you back the game when it was on Kickstarter? I've occasionally had crew members named Stelly. :p
