Fuel up/down again

Why are you buying V Power Diesel?

And Blackhawk; how is your tank so small? I've an older car which will have if anything, the smaller tank... took £30s worth to fill from empty at the weekend..... For reference on a single carb I'm getting 38mpg with about 75% city/countryside milage, and I don't try and save fuel in the slightest. Blackhawk should be getting better as his is injection, although my old SPI was probably worse on fuel than my current carbed engine.

That is always nice to hear. Thank the lord that the Oil companies are still doubling their profits. :) :(  :o

If you compare it to their turnover it's not that impressive. People get all hysterical because of the profit numbers without looking at any other figures and not realising just how big a company Shell is... (btw this isn't meant to be a dig at you, just at people in general)

Yes, but they have still doubled their profits from last year.

I mean good on them, but it is still very galling.

Yes very galling. DEATH UPON OIL COMPANIES. The government are not to blame for the high cost, no, not at all.

The government are most to blame, i know that. It still doesnt make the fact that high oil prices have benefited Shell hugely and left us all a bit poorer, any less galling.

This can't be good for either the oil companies or the government in the long run, surely? If the price gets higher, people will switch to more fuel efficient cars and the amount of fuel sold will go down. That will inevitably lead to even higher prices, meaning the situation will spiral out of control.

And what if there profits were very low last year? Just because they double their profits doesn't necessarily mean they're ripping everyone off...

Got a source for that?

Most of the increases this year have been caused by an increase in fuel duty and VAT.

From the BBC article:

"The oil giant Shell has reported profits almost doubled from $9.8bn to $18.6bn (£11.5bn) for 2010 partly thanks to rising oil prices and output."

What if they werent?

Looking at there financial results from the previous year, there revenue/turnover was $201 billion, with a profit of ~$9 billion (halving this years profit figure) which equals about 4.5% profit margin.

That's really not that great, general rule of thumb is that businesses should be aiming for 10% (many other companies likes banks, vodafone etc have a much much larger margin than this).

Facepalm to some people in this thread.

Why do so many have such an issue with the oil companys making big profit, cadburys probably make more profit per chocolate bar than the big oil companys do per gallon, it's simply because they get so much of the stuff out of the ground that the numbers are so big.

So they've increased output of a product that has become more valuable = more profit. What's the problem? Why does this annoy you when they charge the same amount as everyone else for unleaded?

Exactly. Seems people haven't quite grasped the huge scale of it, hence the large profits.
