Gainward bring you a 512MB 7800 GT for AGP!!!!

forgive my ignorance but i thought graphics ran off the 3v or similar rail ? apart from the fan @ 12v so I don't understand the 12v problem with this new card can someone explain as I am considering getting one & now doubting my PSU which is a Tagan 420

Edit:

reading the post below - my Tagan ,like many others has one special thick braided connector for the GPU, is the required second one just to power the fan? ?

What have other people found?

Just want to clarify - this card arrived today, going to install tonight... Has everybody found that the card needs 2 completely clear molex connectors to power it sufficiently? i.e. not in any way sharing - like with a system fan or similar? If thats the case, then I'm going to have to do some re-gigging of connectors etc... These 'simple' installs are never really that 'simple' are they!!! ;)
Also, my PSU is the Zalman 400W (18amps on 12v rail -solid) hopefully that'll be enough....
Would appreciate any comments... BTW: great forum!!!

Yeah, no sharing for the molex's. 18amps on the 12V my PSU can't keep the card going when I play games, let me know how it goes, do some bencharmking with 3dmark05. If it restarts then it's not your card or PSU.

EDIT: I keep getting some artifacts, well a lot of artifacts on need for speed most wanted...Reckon the card is messed? Tried Bf2 aswell, was ok in that..

Nope

They require more power than what can reliably be supplied by a single 12V rail, hence the need for two rails. Your special connector is likely to have a 6-pin plug on the end anyway which has two 12V rails

Modern graphics cards require a strong 12V rail above all else

A single 18A rail just isn't enough. Be careful not to get this confused with dual rail PSUs

@wildweb_uk - Welcome to the forums :) Your sig is way too big - you're only allowed four lines or a picture, 400x75 pixels with a single line underneath. I'd change it before a mod sees it :)

If you can put them on two clear and independant connectors then theoreticaly it might be better but try it on what you have and see what happens.
Mine works fine on a single clear connector and a shared (DVD-RW) connector with a Antec 380w truepower non ATX 2.0 PSU ~ let us know how you get on :)

Hey, you know I will! (But seeing as I've sold my other card, and if it doesn't work - I won't be able to, until I get another PSU!!!!
It does say on the box just '400W Power supply and "2 free Molex connectors"... so that's what I got... Roll on tonight, with my anti-static wrist band - we-hey!

Nobski, what other devices are you running... and are you o/clocking the card at all?

Not runninq many other devices @ the mo, just 250Gb hard disk, DVD-RW, 4x512Mb sticks of Ocz pc3700 ram. Did also have 2 other cd/dvd drives and another hard disk (160Gb) connected and it all worked fine, but don`t need them so got them disconnected.
Your PSU sounds like it will be fine ;)

Damn i was gonna get one of these.
Do you really need two absolutely free molex connections?

I have 3 hard drives 2 opticals and so cannot have two completely free lines unless you can piggy back them with a special cable or i remove a hard drive?

or am i missing something...
:(

Not sure about the absolutely free molex connectors but I had two spare fortunately and installation seems to have gone okay. I'm downloading 3dMark to see what improvement I get over a x800xl. :)

Well, got home and got hooked up in no time. Card all working fine. I reorganised stuff in the PC to free up 2 indepoendent molex connectors. Everything started up fine. My first port of call was FEAR - and I have some interesting bench's to show, a little later, compared to my previous card.... the XFX Extreme edition of the 7800 GS (256MB).
I'll post them soon.

So, it works fine on a 400W PSU, as long as theres a stable 12V rail I guess. ;)

all this talk of using 2 psu's and reorganising your pc is starting to worry me, i don't have 2 psu's and do not want to remove any hard drives from my pc.

I have an Enermax 433w psu...will this be enough?

FerretFace,
You should have no problem whatsoever. What card are you using at the mo?
