Id be going from a 6600gt with a 2800+ xp cpu...
Can`t get numbers for your CPU but with a P4 3200 in 3D mark 05 you would get circa ( very aprox. median range of 1st page of results in ORB )
4K with 6600GT
6K with a 7800GS
6.8K with a 7800GT

In 3D 06 you would get with a P4 3200;
1600 with 6600GT
3200 with 7800 GS
3700 with 7800 GT

Plus 256Mb Vs 512Mb which will not be shown in the above numbers

For the record just spotted this on the side of the box:

System Requirements
Intel Pentium 4, AMD Athon or compatible CPU
A minimum of 256MB system memory
A minimum 400W system power supply and two unused HDD power connectors available
CD-ROM drive
Requires a AGP compliant motherboard
Requires an available AGP slot
Windows XP/2000 XP 64

question.

I got this card a few days ago and it runs great.. only problem i have is when i upgrade the Nvidia driver from the 8.1.9.8 to the new 8.4.?.? (cant remember the full number, but its the new one on Nvidia homepage)
Anyway when i do this and restart.. i get past the "windows loading" screen then i just get a black screen with a mouse?

I have to boot into safe mode and do a roll back to the other driver.

Any ideas? Or am i just best to keep with this driver i already have?

Have you tried re-downloading the drivers ?
I would also clear out your temp folder first which I assume this instalation would use otherwise just keep your current driver ~ good luck :)

Yeah tried redownloading it from the Nvidia site ..and deleted the temp folder(goes to C:\Nvidia\8.4.) etc. but no luck... just not sure if there is something wrong thats causing this.. as it works great with the 8.1.9.8 driver.. but guessing it might give me better performance with the newer one :(

Might have to do a complete reformat if it causes problems :(

Odd. Both latest release drivers and beta drivers working fine for me. May I suggest using one of those cleanup programs to get rid of anything conflicting and a reinstall of the drivers?

what would you recoment is the best clean up program with Nvidia drivers?
and which driver is best to install?

Col, I wouldn't worry about it too much atm, you're already getting a good increase over your old GT and there will be more driver updates coming.

Just get your wallet out and get your TFT upgraded to go with your new gfx card - you know you want too ;)

I don't really think there is a problem with your card, some drivers just seem to cause strange problems - I've had this issue with my 6800U in the past, some drivers ran well, others caused glitches

We'll see if we can't find a good driver cleaner prog, I think a format and reinstall is a bit ott and you'll probably be disappointed with the slight perf increase, if there is one.

Lol @ Nobski
