Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon

The dragon bit was cool. The rest was a bit boring again. As someone else said, it is seemingly just a soap with dragons.

The story/script isn't very interesting, and neither are the characters. None of them are very likable. Not sure who I am rooting for. There doesn't seem to be any subplots or mysteries etc.

Yeah. No one really illicits any emotions.

I hated jeoffry in GoT. I loved Tyrion and varis. This? Couldn't care less who lives out dies.

GOT felt like going on an adventure in a massive fleshed out world full of people.

This may as well be set on the isle of wight or something

I enjoyed that ep a lot, aside from the overly dark beach scene. Had to fully turn off the lights to see what was going on, wouldn't have had a chance if you watched it during the day!
I always loved the human side of GoT (plotting, backstabbing etc). The fantastical side was always the extra sprinkle of magic dust to make it different to other shows. This is continuing that trend imo. Comparing it to Eastenders or some other **** soap is a bit of a lazy critique.

Pieces on the chess board are nearly all in place, everyone knows the game now and are just waiting for the King to die. Even the poor old King can see it coming now too.

Yeh it was pretty dark. Could have done with watching it in 4k rather than just Sky's standard rubbish HD broadcast. Not paying the silly money Sky asks for just to watch things in a modern resolution/format though.

I still think it is because the characters have not been written with any sort of wit. The whole story and script is immensely dark and depressing with no light relief to be found anywhere. It just makes the whole world rather unlikeable.

Agree with most of the criticism so far. Characters just aren't likeable, you just don't root for any of them to succeed. None of them have any real humour. And the world building is just not there at all.

Next weeks episode is supposed to be the last big time jump and any from then on will be months not years.

There is no world.
Apart from a few "cut to ship scene" - > "destination" there is no concept of a world.

GoT successfully expressed the vast world. Screen time was spent on the road.

I struggled to see what was going on in parts of this episode, including someone getting killed (I think) just before the duel at the end.

We re-watched the part with Daemon killing the random and are unsure why - it appeared he genuinely wanted Rhanera's hubby dead so makes no sense for him to help fake the death.

I know people change over a decade but the adult versions of the characters are just too different to their young counterparts.

Rhaenyra especially has totally lost that Arya/Daenerys tomboy/bucking the trend element she had and succumbed to being everything she didn't want to be. Highly likely that's intentional but it is jarring.

Next season will be where it all kicks off.

I think all the complaints and criticisms in the thread are mainly valid and agree with a lot of them, however week after week i'm tuning in and i'm hooked for the hour and always looking forward to the next episode.
