Games that had it, but lost it!

Wing Commander - 1 to 3 were pretty good, 4 was rubbish though and they haven't made another one since :( (I would love to see classic wingcommander bought back to life with modern graphics).
Origin made many great games, but they also made some real turkeys after they expanded from their roots (and then they were bought up by EA).

Wasnt Wing Commander Prophecy the 5th game in the series :confused:

2142.. maybe a bit too soon but:

Beta phase 1 most definatly HAD it. AWESOME fun.
Phase two stank of ass.
The demo, now i managed to have a game, was amazingly fun :)

Has restored my hope once again.

I definately agree with worms etc, but especially the BF2 thing...the first version had bugs but was amazing...patched it and improved it except then removed things that players from the start loved, like passengers in vehicles getting points (gotta love the blackhawks).It may be more stable etc now but they removed the best bits :mad:

C&C = excellent
red alert = excellent
tiberian sun = excellent
firestorm = excellent
RA2 = excellent
Yuris revenge = excellent
Generals = poo
Zero Hour = poo

this is shown by the fact that more people play yuris online than play generals. yuris was such a great game i think i'll be hard for even C&C 3 to beat, RA3 has more of a chance. I hope they keep the excellent gameplay.

I think more people play Yuri because of the absolutely shocking networking in Generals and Zero Hour. I have never had a problem playing online with any game except Generals and ZH - I have spent the last 3 days trying to make it work and still no joy lol.

The games themselves though are brilliant and very well balanced between the teams.

Mechcommander- first one clever and gorgeous, other than the Transport Tycoon maps... second one clunky and ugly. Someone mentioned Mechwarrior, I reckon the later games were still fairly strong- nowhere near as good as Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries though, which was genius.

Final Fantasy... 5 and 6, quite good. 7, IMO the best game ever made- ugly as anything now but the gameplay still stands up. 8, OK. 9, drivel.

Gran Turismo. OK, so it didn't actually get any worse, but everyone noticed how poor it was after the second one.

Stronghold. Original was unique, not perfect with it's feeble AI, but good fun and really different. Just picked up Stronghold 2 on the two cheap, and it does appear to be a steaming pile of poo. I just noticed that "Quit game" doesn't have a query dialogue. That's clever, that.

Tony Hawks... Tony Hawks 2 was stunning, everything since has missed the point, like a Mk 3 GTI.

Master of Orion II- great. MOO3- worthless.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Populous or theme park.

Or, if developers are allowed, the whole Bulldog - Lionhead transition.

Have to agree on Sonic. The originals are just timeless classics and while sonic was fun Tails was pretty damn awesome to play as well. I remember playing the 2player for damn ages with my mate, esspecially the special level where you run down the track and have to get as many rings as possible and there are bombs. Truly fantastic. I even loved Sonic Spinball, which was sonic in a pinball type game, it just really worked! Everything since then. Rubbish

Doom = great
Doom 2 = good
Final Doom = Poor
Doom 3 = Predicable

same goes for the Quake series... 1+2 were good, Arena was pap due to no story... and 4 looks great but lacks appeal.

Devil may cry... had it with the first, lost it with the second and redeemed itself with the third.

Final Fantasy has peaked and troughed, but FFXII puts it right back up;)

Same goes for resident evil... 4 is THE best game to date...

Most have been said:

-Quake
-Doom
-Rainbow Six (the main one thats got worse imo)
-Final Fantasy only got worse when 9 and X2 came out otherwise they half always been "up"
-Sonic
-Tony Hawks (good up to Underground haven't played Wasteland thought)

Dungeon Keeper.

The original was a genuinely original game, with a wicked sense of humour. The sequal was cliched, and more importantly, the monstly free gameplay had been replaced by levels that could only be fought one way in most cases. Neither the first nor the last set of devs to think graphics are a substitute for good gameplay.

I'd say Battlefield 2. Was a great game with a lot of potential until they decided to not bother fixing a lot of the bugs, or introducing new ones with each patch.

Rainbow Six games. The All of the games up to and inluding Raven shield/Athena Sword were great, Im still playing RVS these days and still love it, Lockdown was awful, cant beleive that was a game that was being made for 5 years, Oh well hope Vegas is good

Total Annihilation. Amazing amazing game.
TA Kingdoms . Vast pile of wretched plebspunk. Doomed the idea of another TA ever being produced.

Planetside. An awesome game which has decayed to a frustration. Still good times to be ahd, but whenever you play it you're always, in the back of your mind, bitter about how fantastic it was 3 years ago and why the hell did they feel the need to screw it over with mechs, caves, and 'performance patches' that resulted in progressively worse framerates every month.

We still play the original Dungeon Keeper :) Only problem is the netcode isn't 100%, DK games can go on for a long time but the game fps suddenly dies at a certain point making it unplayable :(

another vote for sonic here

but the main vote goes to MicroMachines

MM1 was great, MM2 was awesome, 96 was even better, miliary started to slip then it went 3d in V3 which sucked, then V4 which was even worse (and has a shocking camera if i remember rightly)

some games should only appear in 2D. it should be a law really! :(
