Gary Lineker to leave BBC's Match of the Day

I have to admit ever since TNT Sports and Sky Sports now shows highlights of the games literally minutes after they finish, I don't watch MOTD anymore. There is not much point.

I've not been a fan of his political leanings of late, but back in the early 2000s he used to visit the lab I worked in quite a bit - was involved in the development of football boots and gloves with my dad, he came across as a pretty decent person back then.

Never had any strong opinions on him other than “football man present football” but started noticing all the worst people in society hate him so presume he must be pretty sound.

Who the hell watches MOTD anyway ? Boomer TV at this point, everyone’s either watched the games live or seen the highlights long before it even airs.

:D Yeah I don't get all the noise about him either. I listen to his Rest is Football podcast regular and enjoy it. He was a bit of a legend to me when I was a kid during Mexico 86 and Italia 90.

As a presenter I've always liked watching him on MOTD. I'm not on social media, so I have no idea what he gets up to beyond MOTD.

I know not everyone is a fan of his, but I quite like him and it feels like the end of an era.

Wonder if he might go elsewhere, or take things a bit easier? His podcast is good with Shearer and (to a much lesser extent) Richards.

I like the guy but was nothing but a leech. The quicker mainstream media dies the better. Who needs MOTD when you have Prem highlights all over Youtube.

Put the analysis into a podcast and job done.

I've enjoyed having Lineker present MOTD, but for the last 12 months or so it has felt like his heart wasn't in it his interaction felt empty.

It's unlikely to happen, but I've always thought that Mark Chapman presents any sport that he tries his hand at better than anyone else.
