Gary Speed Dead

RIP :(...i remember him playing for Leeds and Newcastle...was a pretty decent footballer and was doing ok as the Welsh manager.

Shocking loss and even more shocking if he committed suicide.

My uncle's Under 9's football team won a competition on Facebook last year and won a training session with Gary Speed, he was brilliant said my uncle, the training session went on for a good two hours and all the kids got signed shirts and photos with him, he was one of football's good guys. Grew up in a Leeds United household and know my dad and brother were real fans of his.

Just watching some of the news reports about him, fans paying tribute at the grounds of all the clubs he played for.

I wonder if he ever really knew how popular he was in football and how much of a huge impact his death would have. Maybe if he knew how well-loved he was, that might have given him some strength. He must have had some awful things going on inside. What an awful way to end a life, and so young.

Dan walker talks about him on the BBC football site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15910712.stm

BBC are reporting he hung himself :(

A good listen (as everything Dan Walker does is), you can tell he is really finding it hard to believe based on what Speed was saying and doing less than 24hrs earlier, all the positivity about the future, his kids etc.

Obviously us as a bunch of randomers on an internet forum will never know the full story behind it but it does get you thinking about what could have caused it. I am not going to speculate specifically and not for one minute am I suggesting any of the following has any basis in fact, but the mind starts ticking over; did he suddenly find out something very bad/shocking in his private life, did he have money worries, heck is it 100% certain that it was a suicide etc?

RIP Gary Speed, totally stunned.

Not a fan of any of his clubs, but a footballer you could enjoy watching.

In many ways I dont want to know why he did this to himself, I know his family etc need closure... but I hope that the news sources keep it all respectful.

Sad news. RIP. :(

However, I think it's pretty cold and selfish to kill yourself especially when you have children. There are no excuses for that. :(

Not everyone who has depression/mental health issues can admit it to it and seek help. Everyone is different and depending on the severity of the mental health issue and your character also has an affect on how it takes over you and if you reveal any symptoms.

Perhaps he has thought about suicide for a long time - but it is naive to comment without knowing the facts.

R.I.P Gary Speed

Shocking how he felt he could not carry on, must be some personal reasons behind it.

Very sad news.

I thought that too. The consummate premiership player who has my respect. I thought he had a bright future as a manager too. :(

I also think the Sickipedia jokes are in very bad taste & the people who put them on there ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I was at the Swansea game earlier and the minute silence/applause was electric.

Truly shocked, staggered and astounded to hear this news. Thoughts to his family and friends :(

Only a few years younger than my Dad, born in the same town as him and played against him a few times at schools levels... makes you put things into perspective.

Truly shocked. RIP :(

Awful news indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if it was depression - I lost a good friend a few years ago. I had no idea he was even depressed (it doesn't always show itself in the way you would expect) and I had been talking to him just the day before.......then his family found him hanging in his bedroom :(

RIP

While I'm not jumping to any conclusions about why he killed himself, if might not of ~just~ being depression.

There are many other things that could have effected him and forced him in to this, it's a very sad situation in which someone feels this is the only way out, so to speak.

As I said previously, he was a consummate player, on and off the pitch.

Heard about it this afternoon and it didn't feel real (was helping a mate move so we were not watching tv)

Pretty much in tears after seeing Swansea's "there's only one Gary Speed" I think that sums up the whole world of feeling for such a tragic loss. :(

Coming from a rational thinking mind. If he did have depression, his mind was thinking anything but rationally.

If he was struggling with severe depression and one down day hits you to hard, well it happens. Trust me.

R.I.P :(
