Geforce GTX 780, 770 coming in May

tells you how much you are using - but not how much headroom you have ....

my 570 as said above I get to about 450W under absolute full load

with my 480 I was getting to 550W ... actual draw from the mains

I think it is impossible to actually measure it because you would have to measure every rail at absolute max output at the same time. I am not sure how you would know if it is at max output until it actually fails...

You can buy a meter that plugs into the plug socket and measures how much you are using. Although actually that is not telling you the max output of the psu.

Yeah I've got one of those.
I will have to do that asap.

Might unplug the 580 & run the monitor off the iGPU to see how much the system draws without a discreet GPU.

Had a quick look at PSU's & came across this one: Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 1000W PSU.
Decent price too at the moment (£120).

Antec ones are usually good... I think a lot of the branded ones are probably made by OEM such as Antec, seasonic etc. anyway. Not sure who makes the coolermaster ones.

Not sure about Enhance electronics, never heard of them... Personally I would get Seasonic, antec or Corsair and avoid OCZ. Best to look at a review because they all seem to vary, for example one brand might use different OEM for different models in the same range etc. Its quite confusing :P

Confusing indeed.

It does gets good reviews. But I will probably end up pushing the budget up & get something better for peace of mind.

Edit: Will probably grab the Corsair HX1050.
Seems to be around £160. 7 year warranty too.

XFX are made by seasonic

Actually you are right it was one of my friends that bought an XFX because it was a cheap seasonic I think. I am confusing them with OCZ who definitely are not a very good brand. They probably get different models from different OEM as I said it is confusing :p I edited my post.

Common sense would dictate that PSU's over time will degrade, but I find it highly suspect that anyone could claim a % figure that would apply to every PSU. Trying to quantify the degrading of capacitors for example is nonsense.

Over time, your CPU degrades, as will the parts in your GPU. Don't tell me anyone can uniformly predict to what extent it will happen.

My advice would be until your PSU lets you down, don't worry about it. IMO most people and sites overestimate how much wattage you'll need to run your system, and GPU companies I would suggest recommend a bit over the odds to be safe.

You'll need a PSU 99% of the time for two reasons only.

1. Your new system is just simply too much for your PSU.

2. One day you will switch your PC on and it will go 'poof', you'll probably smell something horrible and you'll need a new PSU.

Don't worry about degradation, it happens, parts degrade but trying to predict or quantify it is utter balls.

Although if you leave the PSU until it "goes poof" it might take out your motherboard or other components with it as well. Probably not with a good brand like Corsair though.

Depending on your PSU efficiency then your system was using 550W x 0.8 (losses in PSU are not equated into it's rating).

So your system was drawing 440W ish.

For optimal efficiency during load and idle that would mean a 550W-600W PSU would be ideal.

Just seen a screen grab from some european stores list pricing....887 euros

I really really hope its BS. Actually looking forward to the 23rd, Nvidia should take note that I have some money burning a hole in my pocket but I'm not going to spend it on something that isn't worth it.

I really hope that's wrong. I've got the money and although I'm itching to upgrade from the 570 to the 780, if its not priced reasonably I'll hold out for AMD later this year.

£500 is my max.

Yeah prices being leaked now, not looking good for us in the UK. I would say £500 will be the absolute minimum we will see 780's priced at, that might be being optimistic aswell.. Pair of 760 ti's is the way forward for moi..

$719.12 = £473.47 + 20% VAT = £568.16 + Hike = £575 - £600?
