Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

If I remember correctly, weren't the benchmarks for the 900 to 1000 series comparison pretty creative? As in, the numbers didn't match what they released prior to the NDA lifting.

Also look very carefully at what is being tested.

Loads of HDR titles. The GTX1080 unlike the Vega64 drops 10% to 15% of its performance in HDR:

https://www.computerbase.de/2018-07/hdr-benchmarks-amd-radeon-nvidia-geforce/2/

What is more interesting is Wolfenstein 2 which is DX12/Vulkan which means that is doing what we expect with Nvidia cards.

Expect more DX12/Vulkan games in the next few years now.

Still if we say 40% overall, its still means the RTX2080 is 50% more expensive than a GTX1080.

Not really uber value.

Wolfenstein uses FP16 for certain effects and Pascal lacks decent FP16 performance which Turing will have!! Its why it uses it since Vega uses FP16 for the effects too.

That is why Wolfenstein is so much faster.

The slide is basically using the fact HDR and FP16 runs better on Turing than Pascal.

Nvidia you really know how to play to your strengths!!

Just watched the announcement through again (skipping some of it). Man, it was just bloody awful, more than I thought the first time around. It’s just badly run, written and presented. Almost rushed.

No, this is still nVidia numbers we are talking here. They're not apples-to-apples. We need to wait for a decent site to review.

Well as my quick analysis indicates - they are using HDR,since performance drops on the GTX1080 with HDR(unlike Vega),and they used Wolfenstein 2 since it is DX12/Vulkan and Turing supports Async compute better, and since the game uses FP16 for effects which Pascal can't really support well.

The one thing i am wondering, its clearly obvious Nvidia is now moving to Async, their card is obviously built with Async in mind, their team are working with devs to implement Async... the Million Dollar question is this, how much different is it to AMD's Async, lets be honest, Nvidia will not adopt an Async that also improves AMD performance, you can garauntee this version of Async is going to not help AMD at all. Which makes me wonder, if Devs are willing to work on Async for Nvidia, clearly its because they are being paid and helped to do so. Its going to be a bit sad watching these titles perform well on what is essentially Nvidias version of a Consumer Compute card (Vega etc) while AMD is still floundering, because not satisfied with gimping AMD Via Gameworks, they now blackbox gimp them at their own game via Nvidia Async RTX effects. You have to take your hat off to Nvidia, they just taken the best thing AMD had going for it, waited long enough for it to appear to be dead, and come flying in at the deathrattle with their version, taking all the plaudits while grinning at the carcass of AMD's GPU division lol...

its a sad sad day to be a PC enthusiast.

Anyone know why it’s called Turing compared to Maxwell, Pascal, Fermi, Volta? Is it to do with Cryptography?

Ever heard of the Turing test?
Alan Turing (among many achievements) defined a set of tests to determine whether a questions were being answered by a person or a machine. The Turing architecture is heavy on AI.

Take another look. That's not what its saying when comparing 2080 vs 1080. It's more like around 1.5. When tensor cores are used vs no tensor cores they are saying it's 2.0x. Far from the 6x claimed in the keynote. hmmm...

And look at the HDR results LOL. Besides, the community said time and time again to take manufacture performance charts with a grain of salt.

If this is real I am in a slight way relieved. At the same time that confirms 2080 = 1080ti, although relying more heavily on new features than pure hardware specs. So to get the performance we had expected the 2080 to be we need the game to have good DLSS. Regardless very good to see in games like ARK!
