Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

Something that bugged me about the 2080 launch was the lack of HDMI 2.1 support, I see Samsung TV's with support for 4k 120hz Freesync 2.0 (part of the 2.1 standard) are coming soon, I guess this screws with nvidia's gsync BFG push so no HDMI 2.1 for us.

HDMK 2.1 specs weren't finalized AFAIK, there may be a future driver/firmware update that will bring HDM2.1

HOwever, Freesync is not a requirment for HDMI 2.1, Freesync is an AMD propriety name for their drivers that supports Adaptive sync. Adaptive sync is only optional in HDMI2.1, most TVs wont bother with the extra costs.

Sadly no mention of when they’ll start taking orders for the FE Ti’s again :(

There was 5 of those in the other day. Seems like every card ocuk get in they automatically get cranked upto £1400, even with the pre-order price being a few hundred £ cheaper. If they get the strix in that'll be like £1700 or so as its currently £1500 on pre-order. My question in cs about the price hiking still hasn't been answered either despite 20 odd views, speaks volumes.

so for extra 9fps (Approx 20% framerate) the card is about 2.5x the price, bargain!!!.

Which is why sometimes one card been x% faster than the other card doesn't tell the whole story. The 2080Ti being 20% faster than the 1080Ti in that game sounds much better than the 2080Ti is 9fps faster than the 1080Ti.

It's not a dig at the 2080ti BTW.

You know what they are doing, what do you want them to say?

"Yes we're price gouging because early adopters are willing to pay over the odds"

I'd just like to see the "official" line on it, they're all getting their cards from the same places, just some are digging the elbow in with pricing and some aren't regardless of supply. Or if they would try and spin it and make it out to be something to do with exchange rate, weak pound etc etc. The usual spiel we get when gpu's launch at prices over the odds.

However, the improvements to Game Bar might be more noticeable, and even actually useful to PC enthusiasts and power users. Instead of having to run a third-party program like MSI Afterburner, users will be able to see visualizations of system utilization – think GPU, CPU and RAM usage, as well as frame rate. This will be an amazing addition, and will go a long way to informing users why their games start to run slow.

When people break and start buying 2080s :D

It won't be a case of breaking... the 1080Ti is near EOL, you won't even be able to buy a new one at some point in the not too distant future. Stock is already dwindling. Besides, the 2080 isn't as poor value as the 2080Ti, even though it is more powerful. The fact it's more powerful seems to have made people oddly more forgiving of it, and I certainly see more hate levelled at the 2080. Not that anyone is happy that the 2080Ti so expensive of course, but it's almighty power does seem to have afforded it a certain level of immunity, despite being appalling value for money.

The problem with the 2080 is that the 1080ti exists. Nothing competes with the 2080ti so it gets a pass on its pricing but the same can't be said about the 2080 so its a lot harder to justify the price increase. If the 2070 is released at a higher price then the 1080 currently sells for while offering the same performance it will also get panned in reviews.

People will still be using afterburner for overclocking. So I suspect many continue to use the system utilization overlay (Which has GPU, CPU and RAM usage) and keep the game bar disabled.

Yes, I do get that, but it's a bit of an odd scenario... "1080Ti amazing card, BUY NOW!" "2080... boooo, RUBBISH! Stay away!" is how some people talk.

Which is nonsense of course. 2080 is only likely to improve in time... the 1080Ti isn't. 2080Ti is arguably the worst value GPU ever (outside of Titans perhaps), yet as you say it's getting a pass in many circles.

Clearly Nvidia have ballsed this one up, but there is really a lack of logic being applied by many consumers.

Its because the 2080 has a competitor in the same performance bracket whilst the 2080ti does not.

Nvidia is competing against Nvidia at the moment.

Yes, again, acknowledged, but there is contradictory behaviour at play... the 2080 is being maligned (almost universally) because it is so close in performance to the 1080Ti, with that being cheaper yet offering very similar performance... therefore the 2080 is seen as bad value in comparison. Pretty much every review is saying don't buy it! And it is poor value in comparison, no argument there... but that poor value pales in significance to that of the 2080Ti, which while more powerful than the 1080Ti/2080, is offering an exhorbitantly high cost/performance ratio for what you're getting on top. So ultimately, it begs the question how important 'value' is in all of this? Not very it seems, which therefore renders much of the criticism against the 2080 somewhat silly given it's not being equally levelled against the 2080Ti.
