Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

The original Voodoo card was ~$550 in today's money and apparently dropped by 33% after less than a year.


It was under £450 in today's money.

2014 felt like very long time ago and I thought I bought GTX 970 from OCUK for £379.95 but when I logged in OCUK checked orders histories dated back to 2012 found GTX 970 invoice wow I cant believed my eye it costed me £279.95 in 2014. Had fantastic Black Friday deal grabbed MSI Geforce RTX 2080 Ti with free bundles made the card value worth £550.65 which is cheaper than some 1080 Ti models like MSI 1080 Ti Gaming cost £899, Inno3D Geforce GTX 1080 iChill Air Boss X4 £599 with no free bundles and ever cheaper than some very expensive RTX 2070 £600+ models. My old Gainward 8800 GTX was the most expensive card in today price £607.63.

I probably will get £250 after sell my old GTX 1070 and push RTX 2080 real value down to £300.65. Not bad. :) If 7nm come in 2019, I can sell RTX 2080 probably at £500 with £200 profit. :D

Impressive list and looks like you got a good deal on the 2080 but minusing cashback, headphones games from the price is not really a fair comparison with older cards as you probably bought them on release or soon after.

The reason you got such a good deal is that it is a few months down the line and the 2080s are not shifting.
 
What's peoples thoughts on the Palit 2080 Gaming Pro OC?

Only two fans. Does it run hot and noisy?

Someone needs to talk me out of this. RT is not ready yet for prime time. Buying a 2080 will only allow me to use RT at low anyway. So what's the point?

My 1080 is still doing the job. BFV is a little hitchy... but I suspect it's the game not my PC being underpowered.

See I did this with my 970. I soldiered on with it for 2.5 years and only bought a 1080 last year. Right at the end of it's release cycle. Now I might be doing the same mistake again. Waiting it out buying at the end of the release cycle and then finding it gets replaced pretty soon.

Where as you buy now you might end up with two years before it gets replaced.

Turing is a stop gap until 7nm appears. I certainly wouldn't buy one, their resale value is going to be very poor because the RT performance is so bad. The very thing that makes them so expensive to make is what's going to kill their resale prices. Who will buy these for their RT performance when the 7nm cards appear?

In case you missed it, the Metro Exodus developers hope to have their game running at 60 fps at 1080p with Ray Tracing turned on when it's released. It will probably run a lot better than then BFV. It might look amazing, but, is it worth spending a lot of money for one game?

You should probably look through the 25 or games that are coming out using DLSS and/or Ray Tracing. If those games are ones that you are thinking of buying then the 2080 might be worth getting. It's still an expensive upgrade for questionable RT performance and totally unknown DLSS performance. Might be worth waiting at least until DLSS appears in a few games.

But, my advice would be, If you are happy enough with your gaming at the moment I would hold onto what you have. Upgrade when the 7nm cards appear.

I was looking up some youtube reviews of this card last night as my local shop had one for £800

The cooler nowhere near as good or quiet as the better coolers but then this card is about £300 to £400 cheaper then the ones with the better coolers

And also what person pays over £1000 for a GPU to use on a 1080p display :D:D

The monitor (Dell 2405FPW) i was using for gaming 12 years ago had a higher Resolution then that...
 
I've toyed around with 2 of these cards over the last week or 2, the gigabyte windforce ti oc and the strix ti oc. The strix being the better of the 2 in terms of build quality, temps and acoustics. I just don't see how they're really an upgrade for anyone on a 1080ti or titan x, theres a reasonable fps bump but factor in the high price and it just doesn't seem worthwhile.

I have always regretted getting the Banshee, I should have gotten a Voodoo 2 as I played a lot of Quake! :D

I upgraded to a Geforce 256 SDR not long after they released fwiw (double the quake 3 framerates!)
 
I have started using nvidia multi display power saver on my 1080ti.

My gtx 970 was modded in bios to have 400+ mhz idle 2d clocks.
My palit gtx 1070 had 300mhz idle 2d clocks at stock (I assume palit configured that way).
The auros gtx 1080ti has stock nvidia 135mhz idle clocks which causes the card to be super eager to ramp up to 3d clocks in 2d apps like chrome.

In terms of heat and power consumption, nvidia cards can go from 135 to 300 and to 600 whilst still only at 10-11% power load, and barely any change in temps, for this reason 600mhz is a great 2d clock speed. I feel nvidia have really misconfigured their cards for 2d operation. But when you jump to 1300+mhz, the power load goes from 10 to 30% and temps noticeably go up. Even idle 1300mhz is much hotter and uses much more power than say 20% load at 600mhz. I expect the cards are programmed like this because a GT 1030, probably would not have the compute power to play say a 4k youtube video at 2d clocks. Likewise with older generation cards. But I feel a 75 watt power consumption in a browser is very inefficient. Simply typing replies to forum posts on the OCUK forum was making my card go up to 3d clocks.

So I now run nvidia multi display power saver and configured to 30% usage for ramp up and works perfect. For those who agree with me on power/heat in browser, its a good app.

Are they shrinking? What's the guestimate time frame?

I'm trying to deduce expected life expectancy for the 2000 series.

Are we expecting a two year shelf life for the 2000 series like the 1000 series or do we think these will be replaced sometime next year?
 
I am going to guess that they are going to have the 7nm cards out sometime next year. Probably around September/October. AMD will have it's 7nm consumer cards out for the midrange by then and even though they are only mid range cards, Nvidia won't want to leave it too long to get their 7nm parts out.

Everything points to AMD being ready with 7nm CPU, APU and graphics so I'd expect Nvidia to be even more ready to drop16nm from working with TSMC for a much longer time frame.

I think the 2000 series deffo has a shorter than usual lifespan, its release has been accelerated.

Already we have the 2080ti, 2080 and 2070 all released.

Also not helping its cause is it has a muddy reputation which means nvidia will want to replace it with something else.

Isn't that around the time AMD are moving to 7nm+
