Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

Poor Kaapstad, he recently got weak, gave in and bought the 2080 Ti’s even after saying he had no interest for quite some time. Going to need to buy these now, as for sure it will be better than both his Titan V and 2080 Ti

Also everyone here won’t have the best RTX GPU anymore. Nvidia just keep dishing out the pain!

Wonder who will be selling their 2080 Ti to upgrade?

I really only got one as I’ve had pascal since launch and was bored of it. That and went back to liquid cooling and my old AIB 1080Ti wouldn’t fit in my case with a block.

I’ve been happy with it so far. Sure I wish it was cheaper but it has been an extremely quick card and in games the extra performance has helped for sure.

Still not much in regards to dlss but I suspect that will be another good chunk of perf once we see it starting to come through.

I would get the Titan if it was £1000 and the Ti was £700. Not for the £3000ish they will likely be asking however.

Same here. As soon as I saw it I thought damn, Kaaps is going to want to upgrade. If he had known he would have held of a few weeks and went for the RTX Titan.

I know what you mean in regards to Pascal. I have had it from day one when I got the 1070 when it first came out. Really wanted something new also. But as much as I like RTX, I could not justify the cost considering there is hardly anything to use it on and even if there were, the lack of performance would mean I could not use it at 4K sadly. By the time there is more support for it I figure the 3080 Ti will be out, so that works for me and my wallet

Those of you waiting for DLSS in games for 4k/2160p, just run your games at 1800p and put scaling setting to GPU. That's basically all it's doing, and it will also give you an idea of what performance will be like once DLSS actually gets implemented (According to the test done at Hardware unboxed)

Which games?

I am able to max out pretty much all games with my Titan XP. Some need me to OC and may drop into the low 50’s, but with G-Sync everything feels smooth. That said, my max out might be different to yours. I turn off a bunch of things like depth of field, motion blur etc which saves me fps and imo make the game look better.

But for sure I agree that a 2080 Ti is a proper 4K card. It should deal with any game 60fps minimums I would image

I do agree with you though. The pricing of RTX is ludicrous. Hopefully all the negative press impacts their bottom line and they think twice before pricing the 3000 series.

Until AMD competes with NVIDIA, they won't be in any hurry to release their next gen. AMD barely competes with 2070. Nvidia are competing with themselves currently.

Well what it is doing is taking a 1440p image and trying to use tensor cores (and probably the shaders) to try and hit 4K. Turns out performance wise that stacks up to rendering at 1800p in the first place. It's hard to find the visual differences either although DLSS is running at 4K.

Instead of tensor cores, if nvidia just dedicated the silicon to shaders, bet we'd be at 4K without any tricks required. But then the raytracing cores won't have a denoiser (tensor cores).

It may be a visual match, but thats a lot different to saying that DLSS is doing nothing more than upscaling. What resolution does DLSS render at, and is it the same performance as 1800p?

What I definitely find wrong tho is labelling DLSS as 4k resolution when it is not. I also still dont understand why it seems to be only possible to use it at 4k as well.

To be honest I am not even sure why TAA is even been discussed.

DLSS is not anti aliasing.

Disabling TAA only provides marginal performance.

Yet reviewers seem waaaay of track thinking that this is some kind of replacement for TAA and the performance gain comes from that whilst calling it 4k DLSS.

The performance gain is from a lower rendering resolution and DLSS is effectively a newer generation upscaler that can emulate a higher native resolution.

Thats all it is. But I dont think any reviewer has called it that.

Some of this isn't right - G92 was originally released on 65nm 1 year before the 200 "Tesla" series release (8800GT, etc.), the "high end" G92b refresh was released shortly before the Tesla series launch which did annoy some people who'd jumped on it with the 9800GTX. There was a 2 year gap from the 7900GTX launch and the GTX280.

Personally I went 7950GX2, 8800GT SLI, GTX260 SLI (and then GTX470 SLI) and was pretty pleased with the transition and value for money.

EDIT: As an aside the G70 series was never Tesla let alone Telsa and no one actually referred to the Tesla microarch cards as Tesla which only ever became common use at a later date when referring to nVidia's professional/high-end compute targetted cards that grew out of the G80 series.

Well, playing devil's advocate for a second, if you put the 8800GT in today's money it would be around $300, The 8800 GT was released a year after the 8800GTX and was close to the 8800 GTX in performance. So it was a bargain buy.

But, think about the 980Ti and the 1070. The 980TI was $649 on release and the 1070 was released a year later at $379. But the 1070 was faster than then 980Ti. So surely then 1070 is a bargain too and roughly in the same price point as the 8800 GT.

It isn't entirely wide of the mark - one of the reasons I have the 1070 - but I don't think it is a perfect fit either - the original G92 release was a bit of a funny one in some respects and didn't have products in the same tiers as Pascal does.
