German Grand Prix 2014, Hockenheim - Race 10/19

Where could/would Alonso realistically go? Merc are pretty tied for for seats, same for RB I reckon... Take a gamble that Williams will continue their good form? Go back to McLaren who aren't exactly setting the world on fire?

I think Alonso is (unfortunately for him) in the best palce he can be at the moment, Ferrari aren't producing the car at the but they have the resources to keep pushing and when they do get it right they will throw everything at Alonso to take it all the way.

Good points, but tbh, its anyone's guess which team will dominate next season. The rules are ever evolving.

And don't forget, most people laughed when Hamilton moved to Mercedes. Who knows...

I agree that Alonso always puts in top effort. Kimi is opposite. I just don't think he cares.
But in do think any seats (assuming no rbr and no merc) is a gamble.

I wouldn't want to gamble on McLaren. Best engine and they are floundering. If they give up on this year now and focus on next year it may be worth a go. Williams.. They could be anywhere next year.

I wouldn't want to make the call and do a maldanado

awesome racing between ricciardo and alonso!
Ricciardo is so refreshing in F1 - he's just having a great time and driving holding his own against world champions. it's a shame Mark Webber had to leave for Ricciardo to get his seat, but i couldn't think of a more likeable replacement.

Vettel could always throw his toys out the pram and leave RBR?

i highly doubt that'd happen. The chassis and aero is there, it's just renault letting them down, and Ricciardo has demonstrated that even with the horsepower deficit it's best (or second best after Williams) of the rest.

Vettel just needs to adapt to this car, which is taking longer than it should have, but he'll come back to his form soon enough.

Another thing; where exactly would he go if he left RBR?

He's been quite open about his desire to drive for Ferrari.

And you could quite easily say that every single driver who makes it to F1 wants to drive for the Scuderia....because they all do. Some are open about it, others aren't. But they all do because Ferrari is Ferrari* and Red Bull is just some company that makes a vile fizzy concoction for morons in nightclubs.

* - this point would have rather more impact if Ferrari S.p.A (i.e the road car company) would build stuff that was actually pretty rather than have function over form. It would also have rather more impact if the FIA would allow them to make a halfway pretty GP car.

Hey ho.

McLaren are no more of a gamble than staying at Ferrari, frankly.

But I don't see Alonso going back after his bad times there. Williams don't have the budget for an Alonso. I would see a Vettel <-> Alonso swap as the most likely outcome. Vettel needs to leave Red Bull if he's to rebuild his tattered reputation in the wake of being thoroughly outclassed by Ricciardo this season and Alonso would love to drive for the charging bulls. Renault may have dropped the ball this season but I expect Red Bull to be on top or close to on top next season.

Mercedes won't have a seat open so they're not an option. Alonso will be at Ferrari or Red Bull next season, mark my words.

The 458 is gorgeous, but that makes it the exception that proves the rule in terms of Ferrari road cars.

Not sure why you think F1 cars need to be pretty? Apart from a few exceptions (early 60's and 90's, plus a few others) F1 cars have always been ugly as sin. By definition the sport is function over form.

Yep Alonso needs to move to a team he can get another WDC with, he deserves the opportunity. Would love to see both alonso and hammy at Merc, the two fastest drivers in the two fastest cars. Unfortunately that won't likely happen, but maybe RBR can offer a more competitive car next year and he goes there. As much as I'd like to see another Brit win, I'd like to see alonso top again. Would be a shame to see him fade out of F1 having achieved no titles again, just because of the teams he drives for.

If the Hamilton and Rosberg relationship descends into a Senna/Prost style one, then there might be an open seat at Mercedes yet. It threatened to after Monaco and Montreal and the tasty end of the season is yet to come...

To be fair, I don't think there's an awfully big difference between Ferrari and Red Bull. They looked to have similar power levels, so performance wise they appear quite close (Vettel got the better of Alonso in the final 3rd of the race, but that was as much down to Ferrari taking a punt).

If Red Bull and Ferrari hypothetically had the Mercedes engine behind them, I doubt there'd be much difference.... and the engines are taken out of homologation at the end of the season, and we already know the Renault 2015 plant is on the dyno, so who's to say who'll have the best engine in 2015 (you'd expect Mercedes, but I'm sure all 3 have learned about their own designs and the other suppliers).

And we don't know where Honda are at yet and who else they'll be supplying. Hopefully they actually manage to stick it in an old racing car or something and get some track miles done to avoid many of the pitfalls all the teams had in Jerez and Bahrain!

As alluded to already, much of that is down to Alonso driving like a boss, not because the difference between Ferrari and RBR is small. Put pretty much any other driver in Alonsos car and it will be struggling for points every race.

Well we know Rosberg has signed with Merc so any open seat would be Hamiltons but I don't see him leaving by choice. He left McLaren because he though merc offered a better prospect of taking the title but who could he leave Merc for? Obviously we don't know how the teams will fair next year but as there isn't any drastic changes to regs then I can see the other teams will copy Merc's engines but Merc will have developed too so they may still have an edge, aero wise no one is likely to beat RBR but Merc's aero appears to be a close second. So you would have to think the top 2 teams next year will be Merc and RBR. Williams will be there or there abouts too if they can keep up their current form but McLaren and Ferrari will require some serious design overhaul which going by pasts seasons it doesn't appear they will do it.

TL;DR - Hamilton wont leave Merc unless they kick him out as there isn't anywhere better for him to go.
