Types of Power Metal

American/classic power metal
Extreme power metal
Folk-power metal
Prog-power metal
Symphonic power metal
Thrash-power metal
Epic metal

What a load of rubbish.
Why can't we just have rock like in the old days?

DM I know your skeptical but all those categories do actually describe distinctly different styles! Honestly! i can post examples of each if ya like?

Don't worry, I know the bands in the different categories.

once again I'd like to stress.. Manowar are NOT actually Power Metal - I've never understood why they are painted with the PM brush because they are really only Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and are REALLY REALLY gay... honestly... just gay! There's no need for Manowar in the world...
Lay off Manowar :p

/runs out of the thread again

Awesome album :)

Got some more for you dunno if you'll like them though

Breaking Benjamin
Evans Blue
Mudvayne
Went off BB, I have some Mudvayne but don't really listen anymore. :p

Necrophagist/Emperor all the way at the moment. :o

There is so much out there bud would recommend In Flames just because I been listening to them a lot lately and they really rock like hell

Would second Emperor if you like Cradle of Filth if you dont stay well clear as Im not a big cradle fan myself and they sounded very similar to me

Cradle and Emperor sound absolutely nothing alike. :)

Clip of Emperor

Cradle clip

I mean not even in one song from each band do they sound remotely alike at all. :p

I heart Emperor. :(

I've been working my way through a lot of the suggestions! I'm still less than half way through though!

Today I bought the best of Skid Row and the best of Night Wish :)

If you like SOAD, RATM you might like Gojira. Try out their albums Terra Incognita and From Mars To Sirius. They use death style vocals but it's nothing over the top or weird.

I agree, From Mars to Sirius is superb.

Too damn right, all this power/thrash/industrial etc is irritating, just stick with plain rock/metal, simple as that.

My recommendations would be:

Accept
Megadeth
Metallica
Maiden
Machine Head
Slayer

Well the majority of those here.
Iron Maiden - just great tunes, from early simple anthems (Run to the Hills etc), through their experimentation with Wasted Years etc to the current more thought out tunes such as Paschendale.

Megadeth - So Far, So Good, So What. Listen to Mary Jane.. fantastic song.

Also check some female vocals on:

Guano Apes

Arch Enemy - for a bit of Death Metal

Lookout for these songs they are all epic:

Wishmaster
The Kinslayer
She Is My Sin
Beauty & The Beast
Slaying The Dreamer

Too bad they fired the original vocalist in 2005, the replacement ain't as good imo. :o

gone right off nightwish since they fired tarja...

PMSL that's a pretty wild assumption. :D :D

It's the closest thing I could think of, lol. Apart from maybe Mastadon and Mudvayne there's very little I listen to that could possibly musically relate to RATM or SOAD. Never really liked SOAD but I quite like some Rage Against The Machine.

Don't mean to sound cheesy here, but my metal journey actually started with Linkin Park. I quite liked the metal aspect of it but wanted something more. I then discovered Tool (best thing that ever hapened imho) which isn't completely metal but it introduced me to more progressive and abstract music, where every preconception I previously had about music was utterly blown to pieces. After that it was pretty much a case of realising the true purpose of cookie monster vocals and the general darkness in metal music.

Also while I don't like the absurd levels of subgenre classification in metal, I think it can be a useful descriptive tool in what is undoubtly a huge and diverse genre. I mean, while Iron Maiden and Cynic are both metal they sound completely different so it's kinda silly to just label them as purely metal. Metal is continiously pushing the envelope unlike some genres imho, it's just a matter of looking in the right direction.

I have a lot to thank limp bizkit for, if i hadn't bought significant other (which i still quite enjoy) i never would have branched out into all the fantastic metal out there.

Looking for new metal? theres some good cd's available cheep in a certain online stores summer sale, just picked up some myself

Linkin Park, Slipknot, Bullet For My Valentine, then it just went on until I reached the stage where I liked Dimmu Borgir, it all got heavier from there slowly. :o

Couldn't stand the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Carpathian Forest, just Black/Death Metal overall, love it now though. :s
