Gigabyte Aero 15 X Gaming Notebook With GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q Graphics

The TB3 port definitely uses the 1070 on mine, I can see the process using the dedicated GPU when I'm outputting to an external monitor via a TB3 dock and games run as you would expect when using a dedicated gpu.

You are going to have to use 2 cables is the conclusion I came to. I am using a Displayport from a TB3 dock connected to the TB3 port on the laptop, and a HDMI to HDMI for the other monitor. I also tested via the miniDP to HDMI and that also works.

It renders on the 1070 but outputs through the iGPU, that's why you can't do gsync over the tb3 port.

OK that makes sense, thanks for the clarification. It's just a little confusing to say that the TB3 port is iGPU only, even if its technically correct! :)

I've decided to go the opposite way around. Start with a million cables and figure out what can be combined into hubs later.

So, who bought memory upgrades recently, which did you get, and how did they work out? There are some good Black Friday deals around.

Is there anything I should avoid?

I have just ordered an

AERO 15X v8-CF2 NVIDIA GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5, 15.6" FHD 144Hz, Intel i7-8750H Gaming Laptop

from Overclockers. I read this thread and was impressed with the after sales service stories Gigabyte seem to be giving customers here.
I have purchased before from Overclockers and been pleased with their service.

My only issue is that I was terribly torn between the 114Hz 1080 panel machine and the 4k panel 60 Hz machine.
As someone who goes out and about for work, during the day all the machine will be used for is MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Adobe for pdf documents. Most of my colleagues have MacBook Pros with retina displays, which is what tempted me to blow them away with 4k.
But in hotel rooms in the evening I would rather play a PC game than watch a movie, and so I figured for playing games the 114Hz panel was a better bet.

Have I done the right thing?

HI @arthurwellsley…… decisions decisions indeed!

We would consider this choice to correct based on your overall usage and desire for gaming in the evening. Much as we would also like you to be able to blow the retina display away in your office ! The FHD IPS panel is also a very nice display and certainly will stand up Vs the "others".....

Thanks for choosing AERO15, and thanks also for the feedback regarding the support on OCUK forums, appreciated :D  :D .

Ok, had my laptop since Tuesday and got it set up how I like it. One word.

AWESOME!

It's absolutely ripping through my Unity VR development inc Premiere/After Effects/3DSMax renders. Really, really pleased with it. Quite a few jealous faces when I turned up in the Ph.D lab with it on Wednesday :-)

Firstly I want to say I am absolutely loving my Aero 15X. I spend months away from home on tour with bands so I need my laptop to do everything for both work and play and this machine has absolutely everything I need. Huge battery life for those long haul flights, great gaming for down time and all the ports I need for connecting to lighting gear and not least the number pad for the boring shreadsheet stuff.
I had no problem adding the 2nd M2 (Evo 970 1Tb) which I ordered before it arrived.
I needed to wait till it arrived to find out what memory was in it and didn't have time to order the 2nd stick before going off on tour.
Now that I've got a bit of time off I tried to find a 2nd stick of Kingston cbd26d4s9d8me-16 to match what is already installed. I could not find this for sale anywhere - even on Kingstons website. Their reccommendation was KVR26S19D8/16. I saw a report on Reddit that somebody had had success with this so I ordered it and that CPU-Z reported its specs as being the same.
No luck - I get a black screen and nothing else. I have tried it - on its own - in both sockets with the same result.
I tried the original cbd26d4s9d8me-16 in both sockets and it only booted in the socket it was supplied fittrd in. I have no idea if this is normal or not.
Can anybody tell me what ram I need to buy that will work with the cbd26d4s9d8me-16

@Kissarmy I've been reading mixed stories like that all week. I've finally taken a punt on the Kingston KCP426SD8/16, which should come this week (chosen for no other reason than the same frequency and a similar CAS). It'll probably be next weekend before I get chance to try it but I'll report back.

Hi both - we have forwarded to R&D to give you best compatibility option.

@YeWhoEnter - let us now how your particular choice fairs....

Thanks,

@Atom80 Thank you for that. I love your customer service! I have been in touch with Kingston as I bought what their site says was compatible. They have come back saying there is incompatibility because 1 stick uses Hynix memory chips and the other uses Micron chips. They have offered to replace it with an alternative. I have posted the KVR26S19D8/16 back to them today and expect it will be a week or so before I get a replacement. My biggest concern is that when I tried the original stick - on its own - it only booted in one of the 2 slots. According to CPU-Z it works in slot 3. Could you check with R&D if this is normal as I am worried that maybe only one of my memory slots works. Thanks in advance.

Hi @Kissarmy - sorry for the delay, we did receive reply from R&D.... and it goes a little something like this....

"For the customer who is looking for RAM upgrade solution. Please introduce him with the Crucial RAM module. It had been tested with the Kingston one installed in his system"

"We confirm this mixed installation can work in DDR4-2666 speed and stable for daily usage."

RAM MODULE

So if the module you have coming, presents problems, the above link is what R&D suggest.

We have sent your additional feedback just now, awaiting reply.

I also received an Aero 15x with a Kingston cbd26d4s9d8me-16 and tried to find another in order to double-up but was unable to. I followed Gigabytes recommendation and bought a G.Skill F4-2666C18S-16GRS but this didn't work when paired with the Kingston or even on its own in either slot (blank screen, machine won't switch off). I now see the recommendation for the Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 above so I've ordered it and will re-try the upgrade when it arrives tomorrow. I hope it will work this time... surely buying memory shouldn't be this difficult especially when you follow recommended chips. Anyway, I'm loving the Aero 15x, even with only 16Gb, I use it for AutoCAD, Revit, Lumion and Premiere and it blazes through anything I throw at it, its a beautiful machine... it'll be even more beautiful with dual channel working, here's hoping.

Yeah. I didn't decide to expand my memory because it wasn't fast enough. I decided to expand because there are occasions where I need to use MS Teams, Visual Studio and Chrome at the same time and they're all pretty resource-hungry. Leaves no room for anything else.

I still like the idea of having one 16Gb chip and an empty slot but I do think that if you're going with that model then you have to maximise compatibility between the motherboard and a wide range of chips. Honestly, the chips are so easy to replace that I should be able to remove the stock one and install a couple of low-latency, 32Gb chips if I choose to. But, given that I can't even replace a single 16 Gb, 19 CAS, 2666MHz chip with a single 16 Gb, 17 CAS. 2666MHz chip, I'm definitely not confident enough to spend a lot more money upgrading.

If not maximise then document well. The real problem here is that Kingston don't sell the stock chip, off the shelf, to an average consumer. I'm aware that there are some weird compatibility issues around RAM chips, so I tend to match on brand and model. If I can't do that then I'll search for official compatibility lists. If I can't do that then I'll look for the closest chip from the same brand. If the actual answer is to buy an identical model from a different brand, that really needs documenting on the Aero site.

As ever, impressed that you guys are on top of resolving this, but this conversation shouldn't really be necessary.

Well, not good news I'm afraid... received the Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 this afternoon and added it to the Kingston cbd26d4s9d8me-16 already installed - again black screen and doesn't want to power off. Currently waiting for the battery to run down before I have another look. Any ideas on where to go from here... and please don't say RMA, I only received the thing yesterday! @Atom80 ?
