Gigabyte EX58 UD5 multiple restart on cold boot

I was going to buy this board next week with i7 920... are they that unrealiable and whats the best alternative board?

They aren't unreliable boards at all mate, just seems to be an issue with some people.

I had the double booting issue with both of my UD5's to begin with, but since flashing to F9e BIOS the problem dissapeared completely, it hasn't double booted in over 2 months now, whereas with the previous BIOS it would happen almost every morning that I turned the power on for the first time.

Yeah there's something i love about this board even though it has these little quirks - however the first time I had booting trouble a bios update cured it - then a sleep issue - since getting win 7 and a 5870 GPU I got the cold boots and more sleep probs but the latest video drivers kind of fixed that and now a newer bios is available from tweak town F9H, so trying that with a couple of tweaks mentioned here and all looks good.Sleeping fine. Just need time to see the whole picture. I was fine with this board with vista and a 9800gtx for months - no probs. Things are new and settling down. I'd recommend this board. It's a class act.

I too am having these boot problems on cold boots with my UD5 board.

Most of the time things work fine even if the pc reboots a couple of times before getting to windows, but i've had a number of occasions where windows fails to boot. It then ran a system startup repair which said it could not fix the problem.

Cue mass panic! But I just opted to reboot again and windows booted fine and everything was normal :D

The system is an overclocked i7 920 bundle bought from overclockers. I notice the bios is F7. Would updating the bios to one of the later beta versions stop this happening?

If so will updating the bios mess up the overclock settings?

Advice on how best to proceed would be much appreciated.

in bios press F12 will let you save your fresh OC settings to usb as a profile.

You can use this if you need to revert back to F7 for whatever reason(?)

Then before you flash the bios take photos (or write down) EVERY setting in the overclcoking section of the bios ready to reload when you have applied new bios
(dont load the old profile in the new bios - it will let you - but trust me best to do it from fresh!)

If that doesnt help come back and let us know, could be tweaking voltages required, thats what fixed mine but you might be ok just to flash.

Be assured these boards are ace! they are just very professional and need a bit of tweaking to get them right.

Hi all, I have updated the bios and to be totally honest I didnt think for a second I would lose my ocUK overclock settings:confused:
Is there anywhere I can get these settings back?
Cheers and thanks for any idea`s

Yes if the ocUK overclock settings profiles was saved onto a USB pen, was the PC bundle supplied with one?

If No you will need to contact ocUK support

Iv never had a problem with cold booting if the OC is stable. Sounds like the pre clocked rigs are unstable and running a outdated bios. F9m is out now with some nice little OC features not included in earlier bios's.

No I didn't get sent one:confused:
Would you normally get sent a usb stick with overclocked bundles?

thanks for the help

Those having the cold boot problem - do you have a USB device (other than keyboard, mouse or wireless NIC) connected? my P35 used to do it on the original BIOS if I had a USB HDD connected - but later BIOS updates solved that for me.

When it was happening with me Rroff, I didn't have anything other than my Keyboard and Mouse connected.

I think that it can also be due to poor o/c settings in the BIOS that can cause this problem, as the times when it would happen to me the most was when I was still in the process of tweaking the BIOS to get my system stable @ 4GHz, I think it's just a coincidence that it stopped happening after I updated my BIOS to F9e, as that's also about the same time when I had found the settings that I am still currently using.

I have read that some people had, maybe that was just one off.

Better to post in the support section.

Could you not have a go yourself?

Hi

Have a look at the Custom PC Mag issue 077 Febuary 2010 this month, running a overclocking masterclass step by step guide.

I can help by posting my settings if you like?

re:

Thats very kind of you Simon but I have just been on the phone to overclockers who are going to email me a the bios overclocked profile.
Mind you that issue of Custom PC Mag issue 077 looks interesting and I`ll think I`ll get myself a copy anyway!
Cheers and thanks.

I've got the gigabyte ud5 overclocked 4.00Ghz bundle. The system is absolutely rock solid once booted, and it is perfectly happy with warm restarts but I get problems everytime I cold boot.

The machine starts to boot, then shuts down, then starts to boot again. This can go on for about 4 -6 times. Sometimes when it finally boots it grumbles about OC settings, but I just reload the 4.00ghz settings and restart and the machine starts fine. A lot of the time the machine reboots without grumbling about OC settings.

Is there anything that I can tweak in the BIOS to rectify this. I am wondering if it is because a lot of the settings in the BIOS are left on auto. Could the motherboard be 'working out' what values to apply during this repeated boot process?

Please help, I'm clueless as to what to try.
Cheers.

I also had this issue with my old Ud5 motherboard got rid in the end as i wanted something that boots to windows first time this is a well knows issue with the gigabyte EX58 UD5.

re:

I have now got my overclocked 4ghz profile and gave added it and all appeared fine until I rebooted and had cases where is reverted back to default:confused: not all the time but on the odd occasion.
I guess I`ll have to wait for an updated bios and maybe copy the setting I have over?
Cheers

I'm getting the cold boot too, but it doesnt bother me so much. It only happens when I have my PC turned off for a lengthy period of time. I useually get into windows in about 20seconds.
Already updated the bios to the later version, but it does nothing for me in regards to solving the booting issue.
