Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 Owners Thread.

Updating windows last night, woke up to a frozen pc. Debug code was '2'. After turning it off, couldn't power it back on. Power button didn't do anything, neither the power button on the actual motherboard, despite it being lit up (indicating it was still being powered). After removing bios battery for a minute and putting it back, I could power on again.

Pretty strange, just posting about this in case it happens to anyone else.

I can't download the manual rn, will check in a bit. I've never had so many issues with a motherboard, although all have been solved or are quite benign.

So I found the debug code list from the manual. a single '2' code isn't listed. Quite strange

Heres the debug code list from Gigabyte's manual if anyones interested and doesn't wanna download a 30mb pdf(http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5481#manual)

Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice if possible, So over the last few days i have been looking at my Temps and overclock setting etc.

I have been trying to get my Temps down as they have not gone down now that the weather is a bit cooler and are still spiking upto 72°C in game.

So i decided to clean my H80I cooler block and apply Artic Silver 5 and reseat it.
In all it made adifference of about 1-2 °C gaming temps. still hitting 68-70°C.

So i then decided to load default settings on the bios and start again.

I have found out some things id like to share with you, just want to say this is my second build and second overclock.
So the first thing i did after changing a few basic settings in the bios like Audio and onboard graphics etc was turn on XMP.
When i booted back into windows i noticed that turning on XMP seemed to do a little Auto overclock on my CPU because according to CPU-Z my CPU was 4200 and im sure at standard it was 4000?.
So i managed to get my Vcore down to 1.245 @ 4.2Ghz with XMP enabled (3200Mhz) Intel XTU score 1465 and the highest temp was 59°C.

Now as soon as i start changing the CPU multiplier things dont go as well.
to get 4.3Ghz stable i need 1.30 Vcore, XTU Score 1488, Max Temp 63°C

To get 4.4Ghz stable i need 1.345 Vcore, XTU Score 1512, Max Temp 68°C
However in game this gets up to 73°C because of the heat from my GPU and maybe i should have got a bigger AIO?.

I tried turning off XMP @ 4.4Ghz 1.345 Vcore, Temps were good @ 60°C But my XTU score was 1302 (Not sure how this score relates to gaming performance, Higher better i guess?)
I tried to lower the Vcore with XMP off and the PC wont boot into windows on anything less than 1.34 @ 4.4Ghz

Im using this PC to game mostly so i decided to stick at 4.2Ghz 1.245 Vcore and Temps are max 60°C in game so far.
I did look at prehaps getting a H100 but im not sure how much better this would be as i would have to mount the fans outside my case.
I guess i didn't get the best chip lol, and i don't have the best cooling setup with regard to case size, airflow etc.
Im posting this here because im hoping that there might be some settings that i don't know about on this board with regard to Overclocking (Still learning)

I got 4.2Ghz on my old 2500k and i guess i wanted to go a bit higher on my new 6700k.

So guys what do you think?, should i just except i lost the so called "Silicon Lottery" or start looking at custom water cooling :D

If anyone knows any other overclocking setting on our Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 that i could try then please share.

Thanks all

As long as you didnt mess with any of those C1e etc settings in the BIOS (basically most of the bottom options in the advanced frequency section) and windows own power management is still on say "balanced" mode and not "high performance" the speedstep will still work.

Ok stulid thanks for the info, I'd be too scared to touch any of the other settings lol.

Yes enabling xmp autoed my CPU to 4.2 as well.

On that j have a stock overclock to 4.5. Not voltage adjustment.

Temps don't go over 55 in arma3 with the H110

Hi Jim,

Thanks for sharing your Overclock and temps etc, I think that's what I need to do long term....Bigger case.....Biggger cooler

Yeah but the flow also helps. I have my front two intake fans on fairly high most of the time and that creates a a nice flow. The rear out take fan is on low as the air is already being pushed in that direction.

just finished putting a 6700k with this board and 16gb 3000mhz ram in my old antec 900 case with a 5 year old h50 corsair water cooler, fitted a samsung 950 pro m.2 drive and i updated the bios to f8o and then installed win10, it was all plain sailing and windows installed in about 5 minutes:D. getting 2286mbs read and 957 write speeds on the samsung m.2 drive andwindows boots up very fast in under 10 seconds.

had a play at overclocking and managed to get 4.7ghz @ 1.344 volts. i set system agent and vccio to 1.185 volts and llc to high and was prime stable for 3 hours with a max temp of 78c, i dont think the old 120mm h50 cooler is sufficient. intel xtu benchmark scored 1540.

decided to upgrade the case to fractal design r5 and upgrade the cooler to a 280mm corsair h110 with push pull and upgraded fans, hoping for a stable 4.8ghz overclock.

do i have one of the better chips?

What! How do you get the 10 second boot time !

Best I can get is just under 20 seconds. It's bugging me

enter bios and click on bios

change

enable ultra fast boot
sata support - last boot hdd only
usb support - disabled
win 8/10 features - win8/10
csm support- disabled

MIT- advanced memory settings- memory boot mode to enable fast boot

i think that should do it...good luck!

just set fclk from 800mhz to 1ghz with 4.7ghz @ 1.344 volts and getting higher intel xtu benchmark of 1548.

I will try to lower memory voltage next which is currently at 1.35 volts

managed to lower the load temps by 5 degrees @ 4.7ghz and stay stable by reducing the following voltages

vccio from 1.185 to 1.17 volts
sytem agent from 1.185 to 1.180 volts
dram voltage from 1.35 volts to 1.32 volts

Interesting thread.. nice board :-) (I'm starting to consider a skylake system even though I don't need it lol).

enjoyed the build and loving the overclock....join the club
