Going back to AMD

And we are back to it being stupid again.

What is it with you and your trolling?
You are calling my choices stupid but you dont give a reason?

Surely no one should need to justify their choice of PC?

Well it's just my opinion, I've moved from Intel to AMD and back because the deals were better, I haven't noticed anything different.

I am waiting for the 45nm (Deneb) Phenoms, they should narrow the gap.

I like AMD too they have all important underdog status. Also if they are ever going to make a come back they need the support of us the purchaser and in the real world the performance difference is marginal.

Also brands are important, people buy fair trade stuff even though its not value for money. Some people think its cool to buy £100 trainers even though they cost a fraction of that to make from rubber and plastic.

It's just like those who favour ATI or Nvidia. It doesn't matter who likes what or prefers what. I have mainly housed ATI cards throughout my PC gaming journey but yet I have a 8800GTX in my system . I will be moving back to the 4870 soon also as I'd like to be back with ATI although the GTX 260 is nearly as fast as it. I take it I'm stupid also?, please . You could have provided an intellectual debate which would have gave you a lot more respect but no, you resort to insults.

Well yes, without competition we'd be in trouble.

Oh heck yes.

Its only competition, thats ensuring the prices are as low as they are

Without AMD, Intels CPUs would be double what they are, probably more
Without ATI, nVidia cards would be more expensive, and not just by a few £ either.

And so on...

Yes, I love nvidia purely based on when I bought my first Ti4200 ( Which I might add I still have and it still works )

Again, the differences are so minute half the time that it really is all down to whether you like the word ATI or NVIDIA and not the cards. or whether oyu like Intel or AMD ( To a point of course )

Personally, I like Cyrix CPUs and I actually have a Cyrix 800 somewhere I think ,and I have only kept hold of it purely because my favourite Mortal Kombat charactor is Cyrax and ist a similar name! - ( Actually its sub-zero but they never made a CPU with a similar name so... )

By all accounts the new 9950s are clocking rather well so hopefully you should enjoy your 'homecoming'! Make sure you read around - clocking the Phenoms is a completely different enterprise to clocking C2Ds - hence some of the 'poor' results. Now that a bit more is know about them there have been some surprising results - keep us informed!

(I too am sorely tempted - still on my Opteron 165 - It's almost a matter of pride now that I may well manage to skip the whole C2D range in it's entirety ;) )

Apparently so!

Im not really into clocking anywhere near as much as I used to be ( No need these days for me to do so as all new PCs are far faster than I truly need them to be! ) however, the news Im reading is that they jsut get better and better the higher up that ladder you go!

Quite honestly, while I was knocked for 6 when I went from my [email protected] to the Stock E6300 and the difference was shockingly vast, I also soon found out that Quad core is a pretty useless option at this time, and while the 9450 is certainly quicker than the Q6600 ( Not by as much as youd think though ) the difference between the Q6600 and the E6300 is very minimal indeed... In fact, I was actually upset that I even thought that upping from the E6300 to the Q6600 would be a big jump... This is why I then went for the 9450.

I have actually also got an E2180, and I got this purely as a stop-gap while I sold the Q6600 but me, doing my usual junk, kept hold if it.

Anyway, what I am saying is that the move from AMD to intel wa sa massive jump, but now, I am no longer finding the differences in the Core2Duo CPUs are lla that much, so, maybe the addition of an up to date AMD might be a worthy addition to my collection.

Please DONT get me wrong here... I am NOT moving back to AMD and lettign go of the Intel. I never once said that, I said from the start that the Phenom will be My No2 PC ( Unless of course I find it a better system to use than the 9450 )

I am lucky in that I have extended my home and have a whole Lan Room where I play my kids at computer games and I have 14 PCs - all are fairly respectable ( Although none are TOTR ) and so, I can do silly things like chop and change my favourite PC.

Sod it... Cyrix ***!!!!

You're nuts!

And do you think AMD care about you? All they want is your money, just the same as every other company. Caring more about them than Intel is pointless.

DILLIGAF

I dont give a FFF about AMD.

I loved my AMD PCs and I just want another, whats so wrong about that?

My slowest PC at this time, is my AMD 3500 and thats currently my 8 year old sons PC.
I will be getting rid of that, and moving my Q6600 to his slot and upgrading his PC at the same time.
As I have said a number of times now, my No1 PC is still my 9450, this is ONLY for my No2 and my No2 only ever gets used when Im on the LAN, playing against my mates or my kids and maybe their mates too!

Obviously not.

But most people do tend to GAF when it comes to spending their money.

Agreed, although I say I dont, I do.

I just want to try out a Quad Core AMD, I see no problems in that, but I am being called stupid and getting knocked for the whole idea!!! - This I just cannot understand.

As EasyRider says, the car analogy fails, but in bringing another car example out, another way to look at things then, is to say that I can afford a BMW, but I drive a Ford Focus... I am also looking at a new car and I can still more than happily afford a much bigger, much faster car and yet, I am actually considering another Focus... There is absolutely nothign wrong with my current focus.

Now, this is what thousands of people do every day... There is no difference in that and me simply wanting to get an AMD instead of an Intel.

Now, if you think there is a difference, then Im all ears, but the fact is there simply is not.

I want an AMD and I have now bought one.

Good on you!
Some people here just can grasp the hobby aspect no matter what from some of the replies you've have been getting :)

I fail to see the point behind this thread tbh.

I assume you were looking for a slap on the back and a few "Well dones" for going for AMD, but when people point out that it may not be the best decision (in their opinion) you decide that you don't care (or 'GAF') what people think.

Oddness.

Your a father and admit being a fanboy!

The mind boggles.

You really should know better and be setting an example.

:D

Listen, I work hard, several years ago I had a massive bike accident and I should be dead, but I pulled through. I am now disabled and I dont let things gfet to me (Although they do ) I have little use of my legs and next to no use of my left arm & hand ( lucky my right arm is good, eh lads ! ) and then last year I got throat cancer and Im now ok through it, so I dont have much in my life, but the one thing I do have, is the ability to give my kids everythign they ask for... Luckily for me, its also my hobby too, and I love knocking PCs together and then getting my kids and their mates to hammer the crap out of each other at UT or whatever.

Its not like that all they do, cos they have not done it for weeks, but its all I can do these days.

FanBoy

Yeah ok, Im not anymore, but certainly a few years ago, I would have defended AMD to the dead, now I dont... ( Seriously, I used to be bad for it )

I just want a change thats all.

Quick run down on my PC useage as of late...

AMD Socket A
Progressed to 939 and then dual core through to Opteron Dual core.

Very very happy with it all

Buy an E6300 to see what hype is about, then an E6600 then E2180 and now my 2 main PCs are E9550 and Q6600... Nuff said.

Im considering going back to AMD... Not for any particular reason other than I just miss the fact that I truly am an AMD FanBoy at heart.

Now, big is the gap between AMD and intel these days?

What AMD CPU is comparable with what Intel?

AMD wins on budget rigs.
Even the famed E2140/60/80 gets kicked to be honest,
You have to be lucky to hit 3.2ghz stable 24/7 with it, most ppl run it on 2.6-2.8ghz (which is still ofcourse great for 45quid CPU, cant argue here).
Also to run it at 2.8+ with any good temps you need decent cooler like Tuniq or at least something close to it which is another minimum of 25-30quid.
Then the price goes up to ¬90 total.

Also the AMD motherboards are cheaper.

I personally wouldnt bother with E2xxx series anymore unless you plan to upgrade very soon (ie picking better motherboard and all other stuff but you know that u will have cash for better cpu like E8200 soon).

So yeh 6000X2 beats E2xxx series ( YES IT DOES, stop fooling yourself ).

If you can afford E7200 with at least AF7 Pro then there is no competition from AMD if you can OC it to 3.6 with stable temps.
Well the 6400+ with good cooler could come very close to it or to same level but that will be obviously more expensive already and then not worth it.

On the quads topic, the new 9950BE is a bit fixed in comparison to previous versions and they come close in performance to Q6600/Q9450, however, if you like to run ** chipc heavily OCed and can get any of those to 3.5ghz+ then again thats max for the phenoms and no competition above that.
