Going batty in Batley (or comic strip strikes again).

Totally befuddled by Dolphs view that the teacher should be sacked. A suspension is ample for what he has done.

You don’t take away a mans livelihood because of a silly mistake.

I said it earlier, there is no way that it will ever be safe enough for him to teach in that school again. It sounds mad to say it but his best bet would be to move away and try to start again, maybe with a name change. His card is most assuredly marked. He is now at serious risk of death for daring to show a picture of a made up god.

I'm assuming the teacher did what he did deliberately, and in full knowledge of the likely outcome when I call for his dismissal.

If it turns out he was just a blithering idiot and had no idea how provocative his lesson was, then a suspension or a formal warning, along with education and reassessment of his competence would be more appropriate.

Who knows what he was teaching, but if it was being used as an example of something that isn't worth killing other humans over then I'm all for it.

The teacher seems to have been extremely naive as to the consequences.

Many people are genuinely unaware of how brutal and uncivilised Islam is. Islam is a political ideology with a lot of power and plenty of skill at propaganda.

Hah. It's nothing too exciting but I recorded a call to James O'Brien on LBC today giving Mohammed a hard time about Mohammed.

I thought James obrien was clearly woeful in his flawed argument here. Worse he clung onto it like a raft at sea.

You do not need to see something in person to know it would be offensive.

It's called using your brain and your imagination.

Imagine the virgin Mary depicted at a brothel prior to 'immaculate conception' day.

Clearly people would find this offensive. I dont need to draw it for you for you to know that.

This is sad but probably true!!! Personally I think taking the **** is part of our culture. Finding something offensive is one thing, and showing it to cause offence is insensitive.

Showing this type of thing in an educational setting should definitely allowed in my view.

The closest parallel I can think of is showing nazi anti jewish propaganda in history lessons to show how the nazi party turned the German people against them.

Not sure if they still show that in the school text books.

I must admit, I also thought it was flawed for the reasons you mentioned, but just enjoyed the fact he wanted an argument over a cartoon which let's face it, is really no more offensive than any one of the satirical images you see on the front cover of Private Eye. Islam needs to get a sense of humour.

Agreed, the issue here is that people of Islamic fath put this above everything, including the fact that they came to the UK to live in a free, basically secular society.

Sadly this demeanour makes them wholly incompatible with that way of life which they claim to have sought out.

Ultimately this means that we should be strong and forward looking in our approach.l:

Ban the production of halal/kosha meat
Ban shariah courts
Enforce freedom of expression
Etc

And give people a decision if they want to live in a community together with common rule with the benefits that brings or live somewhere else conducive to their desires.

No but we probably should - illustrates how easy it is to use dodgy content in mass media to influence public opinion. Something that is relevant today with social media. I'm sure I heard something recently about what Goebbels would have done if Facebook had existed at the time!

That's the problem with the different sects. There's guys who believe in a version of Islam and anything else isn't Islam. There's a nutter on YouTube who says his own parents aren't Muslim because he moved to a different sect and what they believe isn't true Islam. They have various sects all with slightly different beliefs and views. It's the same with a lot of religions but usually the consequences are never as bad.

Not today, but I think the scale has been similar in the past with similarly authoritarian power-crazed political ideologies claiming divine authority. Two examples within christianity come immediately to my mind. The east/west split that led to events such as the massacre of the Latins and the sacking of Constantinople. The protestant/catholic split that was the sole factor or a major factor in centuries of discrimination, persecution, murders, massacres, revolutions, civil wars and international wars. It could also be argued that the earlier "suppression of heretics" events were examples of sectarian conflict, just ones in which one side won utterly.

Attaching divine authority to an extremely authoritarian political ideology is always a bad idea. Unless the resulting ideology is kept powerless it will result in endless suffering and death. Attempting to appease it will always fail because its goal is absolute power over everyone. There is no appeasing that. Claiming divine authority isn't essential to such an ideology, but it sure is very useful to it.

So im left leaning...I was going to create this thread but was a little busy....so GG to the OP.

This is absolutely nonsense what's going on. To have a bloody teacher under police protection because he was explaining what blasphemy is, is disgusting.

He doesn't deserve death threats though does he. He was literally explaining what blasphemy was whilst using an example of it.

Does anybody know what the image actually was or dare to post it ? It's a shame the newspapers are probably too scared to show it even though showing it would likely shut the whole protests down, all these protestors outraged over something they haven't even seen
