Just configured the new Golf R online and by the time the seats, wheels, metallic paint etc were added it came to:

£34,930

Jesus Wept, I had my heart set on one of these, just sold my 335i too :(

Firestarter, i just never got along with the 335i, didnt like it from the minute i got it. Got 3k above book price for it so was pretty good deal for me. Always loved my Golfs, still got an mk iv R32.

I'd stick with the R32 or a cheaper Mk5 GTI, i fail to see the point in spending so much on a Golf particularly when it hasn't got a V6.

Its simply an awesome amount of money for a car which isn't a great deal hotter than the GTI with some cheap mods.

34k would get you a very nice Porsche instead!

Firestarter, i totally agree with you, im pretty disappointed with its pricing structure. Guess ill start looking for an M3 this afternoon :)

I've been waiting for a long time for the R20 prices to be announced, and was pretty disappointed.

I'll be going for the S3 next year, instead; pretty much the same car, looks better and cheaper.

I think its a shame they've dropped the VR6 engines, I loved my Corrado to bits, but they always did lack somewhat in power, and were pretty expensive to tune.

I came close to buying an S3; but there was something about it which just left me a little cold. They are built incredibly well, good on the road, quick (no quicker than that); but the lack something.... fun.

I ended up with an ep3. not built as well, slower in a straight line; but fun.

I'm looking to change now, and the S3 still looks good on paper, but I remmber the drive. That said, the new FN2 is not up to much. Perhaps the new R26 will be as good as the last one.

29k for a golf r or focus rs is taking the ****.

Saw a screenshot of one configured to ~£41k on Pistonheads in the comments about the Golf+Scirocco R article... Even the base price is pretty ridiculous for a Golf though, however I believe it's mostly down to the exchange rate etc, and altering that rate would give a similar price to the previous generation R32 (well, I read something along those lines anyway - can't really remember it all now)

Almost the same situation I'm in, and exactly why I ended up with my Corsa VXR over the other cars I tried (With the Clio 197 as an exception, that was for different reasons), the car was designed to be fun, it allows just the right amount of LOOS, and remains incredibly controllable.

Trouble is, I'm moving towards wanting something a little more grown up, and with a little more class - it may be the case that I'll have to sacrifice on fun a little to get closer to my goal, but there are other cars that I'll try as well, the ones looking most promising being the nextgen Astra VXR if it arrives in time and the Scirocco R.

What didn't you like about the 335i?

What spec M3's you gonna look at?

See my previous post, i never liked it. Personal preference.

Personal preference? Hah! When it comes to BMW vs. Golf, there's no such thing on here.

That said, they will surely struggle to get many sales of the 'R' at that price. Although they're apparently targeting selling only 500 p.a., and I suppose those sales will come from VW enthusiasts that don't care whether or not there's more car out there for the money.

Ditching the V6 seems odd to me.

Not sure yet, just started looking this afternoon, got about 25k to spend on it. Dont really want to spend anymore, as want some cash left over from the sale of the 335i.

Well for that level, you're obviously in E46 territory. CS's and CSL's are well within reach but you could also have a very nice M3 and change left over.

I'm just interested to know what you didn't like about the 335i? Simply because going back a generation of models might not rid you of what you disliked!

Well I went from a Mercedes C230 V6 2.5 Sport to a VW Gti 2.0T and the thing pee's all over it in every forseable way.. Apart from it perhaps doesn't give the impression of prestige as much.. But for handling and fun and all out acceleration it leaves it standing..

I can't rate the MK5 or MK6 Golfs enough ! They are that good.
