Golf R

Only 500 to be sold a year in the UK.

Does look nice though and i do like the specs. a lot classier and grown up than the compertition.

I expect these to be tuned up to atleast 320bhp!
Maybe even 350Bhp considering that most people get 300bhp from the ED30 MK5 GTi's on average........

I was looking at a mk6 R until I found out the price. It's way too much for the R in the current climate, but whent you factor in the exchange rate being so poor it's about what should have been expected - but it's still a shock.

I've just sold my Mk5 GTi in anticipation of this, so what I have now done is to buy another Mk5 GTi - but this time the Edition 30. This is going to cost me about half the price of a Mk6 R for a car that is two years old and, I kid you not, 2,300 miles on it. Also I won't have to wait 5 months minimum for the car - I pick it up friday :)

All in all the Mk6 R is a very nice car but it's priced itself out of the market in my opinion. Even with only 500 cars allocated to the UK I would be surprised if VWUK sell all of them, only the true die-hards will even think about getting one.

VW have it right........ Hype + Marketing + Delay = £

The MK6 Golf and R value are nowhere near worth it, costing less to make than the MK5 yet costing more to buy but the way VW are strategising will lead to some decent profits in a tough time.

The VW Golf R is absolutly gorgeous, but I'd go for the S3.

Not sure yet, just started looking this afternoon, got about 25k to spend on it. Dont really want to spend anymore, as want some cash left over from the sale of the 335i.

Do not whatever you do spend £25k on an E46 M3. You don't need this much and will regret spending so much on a last gen car. £20k tops.

Im not going to, im actually erring towards a Golf GTi or an S3 now, sold the 335i to get some money out of it while it still had good residual, seems daft to spend 25k with that in mind.

So you think by you silly little comment that isn't something that should be considered on a car that's £40K with options? Compare it with cars from the same family if you're unclear and it might sink in. I actually put my money in my pocket and bought one of the first Mk5 GTi's on the road in the UK for my wife, I also had a MK2 GTi back in the day and have bought a few Audi's over the years so don't have a downer on the brand. I am objective in my view, I sense you however are a little touchy or even, dare I say a fanboy...

Calm down Housey. It's simply this: you said that the reason for it being mundane, is that it's a Golf. That reason is a fairly poor one by anyone's standards.

Instead of telling me to calm down (I'm not stressed, in the slightest) I urge you seek the definition of the word mundane and demonstrate how it's inappropriate when used in the context of a Golf.

...or a Focus, Megane.....

Mundane: ordinary, routine, dull commonplace, boring, dreary.

One Golf does not necessarily equal another, in the same way that one Focus, 1-series, or Megane does not necessarily equal another.

Saying 'Golfs are mundane' is a bit like saying 'women are mundane', in that some are and some are not. I just assumed that you were a bit more educated than to comment in such an obtuse manner.

A Golf R20 or R32 is not mundane (unless you've never driven one, which I'm ssuming must be the case), whereas a base spec Golf, for instance my GT, is fairly mundane.

What VW are doing sublimely is raising the image of the actual VW badged cars and are dipping more and more into Audi's parts bin. Skoda will no doubt get the same treatment. Its no different to Audi dipping into Lambo's patch with the V10 R8. They are actually making more and more business sense by bringing all the cars in the VAG group closer aligned. And now that they also own a big portion of Porsche, no doubt that parts bin will come into play (actually it already is with their 4x4's).

I know badge snobbery is still ripe in this forum with Merc's and BMW's still being the best of the best and every time someone mentions "VW" or "Golf" they seem disgusted that anyone would put them in the same category.

The fact is that VW are raising the profile of their cars to a higher standard. Audi will no doubt raise their prices inturn to remain the higher brand. Has anyone seened Audi's prices recently........

The ED30 GTi is an S3 with a different badge! They both have the same engine and the Golf is better spec'ed and has a nicer interior. The S3 on the other hand just looks like an Audi with added bling. The GTi will always be the best hot hatch interms of build quality and image.

As for mundane, I see more Audi's and 3 series on the roads than anything else. Even more than mondeo's! To me they seem mundane and ordinary! A Golf is no more mundane than a C220 merc or a 3 series 320.

It's a Golf.

It's got a normal engine with a chip.

It's not going to be very special.

Its the got Audi S3 engine. Suppose they are boring too eh..?

Cannot believe that these things are priced higher than an S3. Way to much money for a Golf.

A basic Golf R20 is still cheaper than a basic S3. VW wouldn't have been making business sense by pricing the R20 over the S3.

You can price any car up until it looks way too expensive. I bet if you specced up an S3 with a lot of extra's it would be more expensive than the TTRS

Why don't VW let Audi sell the more expensive cars?

They are.
Basic VW's are still cheaper than basic Audi's.

Meh tbh... golfs are supposed to be down and dirty seat of your pants fun... MK1 GTI, VR6, R32, etc... plain, functional but not without some style.

Having had my Golf GTI Mk5 with a 240bhp box on it, I can safely say the Golf is far from mundane.

Sure it will double up as a distance cruiser and is very refined, but unleashed, they are so far from mundane, that word doesn't even belong in the same sentence.

Having said that, I wouldnt pay 40k for one.
