Golf R

It is Haldex, just as the R32 was and the S3 is.

It is the "improved" Audi version that I think is also on the TT-RS the system has a high pressure pump that can pre-charge the system so the front wheels don't need to be spining to put power to the rear. I suspect it has some kind of interaction with the lanch control on the DSG box where it launches with most of the power going to the rear as the 0-60 times are pretty quick. Even standard you are talking low 13 second 0-100s which is pretty swift if it is backed up with good handling.

It is priced out of the market considering it will go up another 2.5 % with the VAT increase. They should have upped the power to 300bhp which is an easy ECU tweak and price matched the RS Focus offering an alternative that is a little more subtle with added bonus of 4wd. I assume VW didn't do it to prevent sales from being taken from the S3.

I agree with Fox the Sirocco is the better looking car being crippled by VW to prevent it from taking sales from the Golf.

VW will stop selling 3dr golfs when they stop moving them. Clearly there is a demand. if there wasn't then they wouldn't sell any and wouldn't make any.

VW have been making Golfs for a very long time now - im sure they know what they are doing.

Its the most successful hatch back in history with more units shipped than any other hatch back!

Leave it to the experts.

They've not sold any 3 door R's yet as neither the 3 door R nor the Scirocco R are on the road yet.

You've totally missed the point here.

So what?

Leave it to the experts.

The same experts who sold only a handful of Golf Plus and Pheaton?

So why are you saying they wount sell any? Argument goes both ways!

I bet they sold more of those than BMW sold M3's. Does that mean BMW should stop making M3's?

Ferrari, Aston, Lambo etc only sell a limited amount of cars a year. Doe sthat mean they should stop making them because they dont shift volumes?

A lot of people think that the 3-door versions look more "sporty."

So what if they want the convenience and practicality of the Golf but a slightly sportier look?

The whole point is that there is... a Scirocco. Which is basically a Golf, with 3 doors and a slightly sportier look.

I'd love to reply to photoshop but i cba to re-type his post so I can quote it. How hard can it be to use the quote feature properly

In your opinion.

No, I beleive the fact a Scirocco is a sportier looking 3 door Golf is fact, not opinion. It has, after all, 3 doors. And is built on the Golf platform.

Why, what do you think it is? A watermelon? A people carrier? Based on a Messcherschmitt?

The general public won't see thie similarities between the golf and the scirocco.

Ok Fox, you win!
VAG group havent got a clue and should stop making 3dr cars ASAP!

BMW for the win!

You clearly know better than the VAG group so i'll stop.

Are you telling me a £40,000 Golf is aimed at 'The general public'?

We are discussing the R series here.

Of course, because VAG have never made product errors ever, in the history of the universe, have they. Infact outside in my road now are 12 Passat W8's, 10 Pheatons and everyone else has a Golf Plus

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY NEVER MAKE A MISTAKE VW

I hope there isn't loads of traffic in town later as everyone queues around the block to order a £40k 3 door hatchback from VW.

Not everyone who will buy an R will be as informed as you are Fox ;) I suppose less-informed is a better word than general public.

You don't need to be informed to know a Scirocco is like a 3 door Golf only sportier looking, you just need to not be walking into your VW showroom with a guide dog. A £40k Golf is not something you impulse buy. This will be an enthusiasts car.

If the 3 door sells over the Scirocco it'll be because VW deliberately nerfed the Scirocco by making it FWD not 4WD.

A Golf is a lot more practical though.

Mum looked at the Scirocco before buying the Mini and was put off by the small boot and the shape of the boot such that in order to unload your shopping you have to bend over and lift it out which is a problem for those with bad backs. On a Golf this is not the case. That's just one example that highlights the practicality issue.

It's probably the only example. A 3 door Golf is not really that much more practical. If you want practicality the 5 door Golf is the car you'd chose. The boot in the Mini is smaller than that in the Scirocco.

So there we go - the Golf 3 door R. A £40k Golf for those with a bad back

Fox is right when the Mk5 Golf GTI and Sirocco were on sale they only sold a handfull of 3 door Golfs as everyone was buying the Scirocco which was cheaper, looked better and handled better due to its wider track and its adjustable dampers which were standard.

VW noticed this and decided that they would cripple the sales by not updating the interior and dropping 4WD from the R version which makes it give or take the same car as the Leon Cupra which is almost 10k cheaper. If the Scirocco R had 4WD and the Golf interior I can't see anyone buying a 3 door Golf R20 over it even if they were the same price.

I just looked through the option lists and VW haven't even included the magnetic dampers as standard on the R20. I just spec'd one up and it was 36k for a Golf which is crazy.
