Golf Thread

Just back from a nice golf holiday in Portugal. Weather wasn't brilliant all the time, but the courses soaked up the rain well, and still managed to get in 5 rounds in 4 days. Played at Pestana Gramacho for the majority, lovely course. Tee'd off at 7:30am every day and got round in less than 3hrs for a 3 ball. made the mistake of trying to get an afternoon round in at a different course, jeesus, we walked off after 8 holes and 2hr 40m when we got to the 9th tee and 4 more groups were waiting to tee off and you could see 3 groups going down the 10th.......

Managed an 82, which was annoying as I was oob on a par 3 by only a few feet, hit my provisional into the same spot but stayed in bounds this time and chipped and putted for a 5, so 2 shots lost there, and had 3 horseshoe puts and 2 more lip outs, sooo close to a great round of golf, it's 5yrs since I last broke 80!

Had my first round since last September today, first time I've even picked up the sticks. Front 9 was horrific, I got 5 points and it was complete tortire. Back 9 I got 12 points so I left a lot happier, still not great but first game in 8 month I cannot complain. By the back 9 I was quite content I was ironing the worst of my kinks out, I was slicing pretty horrific pretty early and that was thereabouts fine by the end, my short irons when I needed some loft needs a lot of work though, they were pretty traumatic at times :p

Onward and upward though now!

I'm just getting back into it. Been going to the range last few weeks to get my swing going. Think I could do with a couple of lessons though. Hitting the ball cleanly but pushing it to the right, albeit not a slice.

Ive been on the hunt for a new driver and maybe a putter. Where is a good reliable place to by second hand clubs? ive seen a few good drivers around 50/60 on a couple of pages the Callaway Diable Edge and the Taylormade R9 and wondered if there were other places i could find good deals. Thanks in advance

local pro shop would be a good starting point. Online 2nd hand stuff is a total gamble in terms of fakes etc.

Do you guys care what golf balls you use? I'm looking to buy some more and could get some Callaway Warbirds for £9.99 per pack or get some Callaway Super Soft for £16.99 per pack with 3 extra balls in each pack. I understand that the super softs are supposed to spin more and provide better feel around the greens, but is that really going to make much difference to me? I'm an 18 handicapper and am looking to get down closer to single figures this summer.

Personal opinion is it comes down to feel and how fast your swing speed is. If you are an 18 handicapper I wouldn't imagine it will make much different providing its no tour ball that needs a monster to get the performance out of it. I used the Srixon Q Star's for a while as it felt so nice off the face however I now play with ProV1's as my striking has developed and that now suits me.

Of the two balls you mentioned, I won some Callaway Super Softs a couple of weeks ago and have been really impressed by them. They feel great and sound great when you catch them well.

Won my first ever major at the club this weekend. Shot a nett -7 off 12 (11.6). Have now been taken down to 10 (10.2). Close to my season's aim of single figures now! Just another 0.8 to go...

Go on sports direct and buy the Srixon AD333 Tours for £17.50. Great balls.

Well done Hinchy on the win, congrats!

I went for the Callaway Supersofts in the end. American Golf had a good deal on for a 15-pack of them, so I bought two of them for £36. That's about £1.20 per ball, not bad really.

So yesterday I completed the 72 holes in a day golf challenge. This was to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research and it is one of the toughest things I have done. We covered a total distance of 45k (28miles) with a full bag on our backs. First tee time was 5:45AM, had a 1 hour break after 2 back to back rounds and then completed the following 2 rounds back to back by 8:30PM. What seemed to be a nice day suddenly turned against us during our 3rd round and we then had to battle through wind and rain! I would definitely recommend it as it is a challenge playing 18 holes on occasions let alone 72!

Has anyone else done it and what did they think!?

So after shooting 26 points in 9 holes last Tuesday I was confident this week. Unfortunately I took an awful challenge at football on Monday. I then played golf on Tuesday of this week and shot 6 points in 5 holes and at that point could not swing the club any more as the pain was too bad. After losing last summer to a broken thumb I am quite anxious :(

Played Villa Sol in Portugal last week with a pal who was over at the same time as me. Shot 30 points off 16 which I was happy with. Difficult course but the main issue was the shonkey hire clubs. Macgregor clubs with regular graphite shafts. Jeeesus, the ball was launched into orbit on most of the first few shots. Ended up playing most shots as cut downs with longer clubs than usual, 6i instead of 8i etc.

The course was in good nick, but the greens were a bit slow. It sure made me miss my own clubs, especially my putter!
