Golf Thread

To get anywhere in long driving you need to be up closer to the 400yd mark (i play with guys who are closer to the 300yd mark on the course). I know a guy from another forum who swings at over 130mph and regularly gets it close to, if not over the 400yd mark. I'm in the process of building a club to have a laugh with this up the range and on golf society days with my mates, got a 'House of Forged' extra stiff long drive shaft and am trying to source a 4.5 degree driver head to put in it, should be fun to even be able to get it off the tee! :)

yeah i was under that impression but as i know i got work to do but as i said i think i need a better driver with the longer shaft to gain the distance but i only been playing a short while 2nd year so not doing to bad really, think also i need to warm up much better than i do as well any tips or videos my instructor told me a load but then i tend to forget them.

Why is it that I can drive on the course, yet when I go on the driving range, I completely mess my drives up. I just cannot seem to hit them well at all.

Best advice i can give is to practise short game. I fell into single figures, after i got over the I want to hit my driver 300+ every time. "Drive for show, putt for dow" method. Practising around the green is a must.

How on earth does he manage to keep it on the straight and narrow with a 130mph swing speed?

Thats a brilliant saying :D

I went to the range today, about 80% of the balls i hit were with a PW aiming for various fake greens on the range etc

Do quite well, suck on the course though :D

Look like some really nice clubs coupe69. Have you always swung that fast, or has the speed just got faster the more you play?

I guess it's always been fairly quick, five years ago when I started it was around 90 mph and has gone up gradually since.

OP dont get sucked in by some of the posts about fast swing speed, as it is not about that, I know an ex pro, who is also a club captain, he hardly swings at all, looks like zero effort to be fair, but it goes a hell of a long way and accurate aswell.
So bear that in mind, lessons are a good thing I had plenty when I started still go back for more now and then.

+1 to lessons, get the basics right from the beginning and it's a lot easier to get better quicker. As for "pro's swings" a lot of them do look like they have such a lazy swing, but they will still generate the club head speed through impact with the ball. If they didn't it simply wouldn't go as far. The average tour players swing is around 112-113mph, The big hitters like Tiger, Bubba Watson etc swing around 125-130mph.

Again this is great advice, short game and particuarly putting is where you're going to get most gains. It's all very well getting to within a few yards of a 550 yard par 5 green in 2, but if it takes you another 4 or 5 to get down it really defeats the object. If you can regularly get up and down in 2 from around the green then your scores will tumble. :)

nice clubs coupe69. How are you getting on with the blades?

My current clubs are;

Driver - Ping G5 (9 degree aldila stiff)
3 wood - Taylormade V Steel 15 degree
Rescue - Mizuno Flihi clk 20 degree (soon to be replaced with Ping G5 5 wood)
3 - PW - Mizuno MX-20 forged
GW - Mizuno MP R Series 52 degree
SW - Mizuno MP T Series 56 degree
Putter - Yes! Tracey 2

Thinking of adding in a LW, obviously taking a club out of the bag to accomodate it. depending on how I am feeling.

Normally use pro v1 for the ball, but been using Nike One tour recently as i won a box.

Playing of 16 at the moment, but shot a gross 78 in the week so expect to be dropped 3 shots, perhaps 3.3 dependent on standard scratch.

Nice to see a good golf thread going!

I will ask a mod to rename the thread title.

Does anybody else get a sore back if they play too much golf? Happens to me a lot and i have to take a week or two off playing, sucks!

However i am playing tomorrow night on a course for the first time with my new clubs, i will report back :D

My swing speed with my driver is just over 100mph, I think I averaged around 102mph, although I haven't had it checked for a year or so.

You'll improve quite quickly if you're playing regulary, that's the problem with this game, I find if I don't practice at least a couple of times a week then I soon lose my swing and tempo.

My clubs :D

MP33s, good choice sir i play the same, 3 Vokeys in my bag also (spin milled)

Do it! LW is my favourite club in the bag especially after i moved from Cleveland wedges to Vokeys!

Very well, had them for about 2 years now and wouldn't be without them.

Indeed, they are in my opinion the prettiest irons ever produced (along with the mp37's), as well as one of the best to hit when you middle them, pure butter like :D.

Played Hawkstone Park yesterday, our company has corporate membership, so I'm lucky enough to get a few rounds in a year there.

If any of you get the chance to play it i'd jump at the chance, it is a truly beautifull place to play golf.

I've played a lot of courses but The Old Course at Hawkstone never fails to take my breath away.

Unfortunately I ended up with a rubbish score after being 2 over at the turn. It really doesn't matter though at that place what you play like, as the scenery will soon get you going again after a poor hole.

My Clubs are
Driver: Cleveland Hi-Bore XL
5 Wood: Titleist 906 F2
Rescue: Nike CPR
Irons: 5-PW Taylormade RAC
54 degree wedge: Cleveland CG11 Black
58 degree wedge: Mizuno MP nickel wedge
Putter: Rosa (Daytona i think)

Bags: Pencil Bag, Carry Bag and Tour Bag

Balls: usually titleist NXT tours or Srixon Soft feel

Handicap: 18 currently but coming down due to my work around greens and approach shots :D

Course: Harwood Golf Club, Harwood Bolton

I would start to upgrade my irons or replace my wedge but next year i will hopefully be going to university so i don't know if i will be able to carry on playing 3 times a week on a course :/

I love the game though and really got into it at the end of last season and i have the bug now, This year i have already won a County Schools cup just need to get that handicap down :D

Some nice clubs being rolled out there guys. I've been fairly lucky recently as the girlfiend has had some decent bonuses in the past couple of years and treated me to some decent gear rather than the bargain basement clubs i had.

Driver: Nike Sumo2 5000 with Standard Stiff shaft 9.5 degree
3 Wood: Titleist 909F2 with Aldilla Voodoo Stiff shaft (a great shaft by the way!)
Hybrids: 3 & 4 Taylormade Burner with standard reg shafts
Irons: 4-PW Taylormade r7 with reg shaft (in the shop at the moment getting swapped for DG s300 shaft)
Wedges: 50, 54 & 58 Ping Tour WRX T Grind with Nippon GH1050 wedges shafts
Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Studio Stainless (looks like the one you have coupe?)

Usually play Nike One Platinum balls, but they are getting a bit thin on the ground now, so have swopped to the Nike One Vapor which seems a decent compromise.

Been playing just over 2 years now, had a lot of lessons and play regularly too. My mate is a PGA teaching Pro which helps on the lessons front. Handicap is a bit of a rollercoaster depending on who i play with. Society is 24 (we're usually half cut by the time we tee off after 4 or 5 pints!) but they haven't cut me yet as i haven't turned in a decent performance yet. Play with another group of lads when sober and they have me off 12.3.......

My lowest score so far is a 76 on a par 72, played it the following week and hit a 92. Main problem for me is getting off the tee at present, i seem to have mastered the 'power top' so the driver is going to be staying at home over the coming months, which is why my scores have been quite high.

The two biggeest differences to my game so far have been the lessons and the fitted irons. After that i would say spending time (a hell of a lot of time!!) putting at the local club rather than going to the driving range has saved me probably around 10 shots a round lately.

Course wise, i've been very lucky this year, played Wentworth, Woburn Abbey, Brockett Hall, Slaley Hall, Ganton, Alwoodly, Seaton Carew & Cleveland - all of which i would recommend, especially Seaton Carew, Alwoodly, Ganton and Wentworth. Played St Andrews Old last year which whilst a fantastic experience for the history of the course it didn't live up to my expectations and i would rather play some other links courses.

Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Studio Stainless (looks like the one you have coupe?)

Mine is the Newport 1.5 with the goose neck although it's a few years old now.

Some nice clubs there kefkef, have been looking at the 909's myself, quite good that they come with the voodoo shaft as standard. I have a fujikura tour platform in my driver, graffalloy prolaunch red in my 3 wood and aldila vs proto "by you" in the hybrid all stiff shafts. Rifle 6.0's in the irons.

So i've just come back from the range with a MAHOOOSIVE smile on my face :D

Its strange, before i got my new clubs i expected to fluff a shot, now i can't belive how well i hit the shots :D

Hit the 5 iron about 180+ yards on one shot (average about 150-160 with it)

My and my friend were having a little competition which was good 'closest to that flag, closest to the 100yard marker' etc, i really think that helps more than just smacking the ball.

One problem i have noticed, when using my 3/4 iron to try and get abit of distance i hook the back to the left quite badly, why is this?

Good to hear it's going well Andr3w, with regards to your 3/4 iron, sounds like you must be getting through the ball to quickly.

A quick fix would be to try putting the ball slightly further back in your stance, which would obviously give you less time for your wrists and the rest of your body to get too far forward.

However having said this I'm no pro, so if the problem persists it may be time to seek a proffesionals help.

Are the 3 and 4 iron more like a hybrid with your set?

Yes mate the 3/4/5 are all hybrids, which really confused me as i don't hook the 5iron/hybrid.

I also put the ball in the same position (at least i think i do, near the inside of my left foot for the hybrids)

I think i will have some more lessons anyway, mainly because i found it really helped me to begin with
