So, did 9 holes yesterday played terrible (well i thought i did) but i got a score of 51....one of the best scores i have got for 9 holes, weird :D (yes i know its a naff socre for you guys) i usually get less on the back 9 so would have ended up with around 98ish...

I haven't registed for a handicap yet but i GUESS i would be about 27-28, i lost most of my shots when about 10ft away from the green, im TERRIBLE for chipping on, any advice? Putting is usually 2putts.

I was getting around the green in about 2-3 iron shots(inc tee'ing off) but around the green was terrible, i don't really know how to hit chip shots :(

chipping try taking it like a putting stroke, and trust the club to get the ball in the air you dont have to flick it up/

Stand with the ball in the middle of my feet or to the left/right?

Also somebody mentioned using the 8iron and doing the putting action with that, but would this work when ~10foot away? Its a horrible game, too hard :p Playing again today when i finish work.

Have a quick read of this and it explains the basics for getting your head around chipping.

http://golf.about.com/od/golftips/ss/6_8_10_chipping.htm

It's no substitute for practice, but it gives you the general theory behind it. It also shows the general stance you take (pretty much the one i use, but my feet are as close together as i can get them) being very open and isoltaing the lower body on the backswing (no hip turn, leg action, no wrist cocking etc) so you go back like you are putting, then coming through the ball with firm wrists (no flippy flapping at the ball using flicking motions with your wrists!).

It's all about getting the ball on the putting surface as soon as possible and letting it run towards the hole.

51 is a good score for 9 holes though for just beginning (which course?). I have a mate who has just started and he's around the 60 mark (he still has to learn that even though he is built like Arnie that it's not all about muscling the ball as far as he can). If you want to track your handicap without being in a club there is a good tool on the todays golfer website.

Thanks guys, i will look at that link.

It was a brilliant idea making this thread now :D

This is the scorecard for the first 9

90 foot, I'm presuming you meant 90 yards

I play off 8 and my yardages are as follows to give you some sort of comparison:

lw 90-95
sw 100-105
gw 110-115
pw 120-125
9i 135-140
8i 150-155
7i 165-170
6i 180-185
5i 195-200
4i 205-215
21* hybrid 210-220
3 wood 235-250
driver 270-285

I would have thought mate playing of 8 you would be able to hit slightly longer than with the lower irons, but it does depend on other factors aswell :). Im playing off 12 atm and get the same distance with the top irons like 4 and 5 etc but would add 10-20 more yards on for the bottam ones

pw 130-140
9i 140-155
8i 155-165

Good to see a golf thread on here though :) will be watching with some interest :)

Distance and handicap aren't really related. Plus your irons may have different lofts, your irons lofts may have been affected (if they were correct at manufacture), the shafts may be different stiffness etc etc.

I play a guy that would be hitting a 5 iron when i'm hitting a PW but he manages to get the small white ball in the hole in around the same amount of shots as me :p

Thats what i was saying about otheer factors aswell mate :D ive got a mate who take a PW when the hole is 150-160 away and lands it everytime, but you wouldnt think it by looking at him lol

Bloody hell, i'd be using a 6/5 iron for 160yards :p....but then again my swing speed is that of a girl

I'm going to do the 9 holes i did yesterday again shortly, i will try the tips i have been given for around the green and hope i get less than 51!

your doing well to get round nine holes in 30 mins mate. everyone has to start somewhere :)

Biggest issue I have is sometimes I am the best ball striker I know :) so I may be hitting my 7 iron 170+ yards, other times I'm poor and only hit it 140 - the big issue is when I have a day where it changes each shot!! 1 shot will be 10 yards short and the next 10 yards out the back. If only i could putt i'd be half decent though ;)

im off to far grange golf course for 3days of golf and beer hmm, looking forward to it as im a new member and owner of a carvan there so all the golf i can do on my door step weather not looking to bad so hopefully i play well, got a bit of a twitch in my back again but hopefully i be ok,anyone played here yet lovely place and friendly staff.

I would have thought mate playing off of 12 you would have seen a number of higher and lower handicap golfers all with different swings and different yardages

I have a friend at my old club who played off 4 and he hit the ball shorter than me, but what he lacked in distance he more than made up for with his short game and putting, both of which was awesome. I also have another golfing chum who plays off 8 and he hits the ball a country mile, the problem is he can be very wayward off the tee and this is why he's off 8 and is struggling to get any lower.

My yardages I consider to be pretty much spot on and I can usually get within my five yard margin that I put up on that post. Obviously these yardages are based on a dry summer day on the flat. In the Winter you can take 10-15 yards off those numbers, and of course the wind and elevation changes also effects yardages a lot too.

Another thing to consider is my irons have fairly weak lofts compared to a lot of irons you get today. For example my pitching wedge is 48 degrees, whereas a lot of modern irons are generally around 45-46. I also get my irons loft and lie checked every season as they are forged and bend a lot easier than cast clubs.

Here is a complete list of my lofts.

Iron --3---4---5---6---7---8---9---PW
Loft° 22--25--28--32--36--40--44--48

At the end of the day though it doesn't make a jot of difference how far you hit the ball (unless you're woefully short), it's how many it takes you to get down in, thats the most important factor of them all ;)

Well yesterday i went round the 9 and got 53 (so 2 shots worse than before) HOWEVER i did do some cracking shots, its just really hard to remember what to do. If i remember to do onething i forget another...grr :p

This man speaketh the truth !!

Club distances are something you should not concern yourself with, except, knowing how far YOU hit them. Thats the only thing that matters.

My mates callaway PW is 44 degrees. My own MP60 PW is 47 degrees.
Manufacturers sell to the masses on Ego. The mess with the lofts, to make the clubs hit the ball longer. They can then say, "Our clubs go furthest" etc. The problem with this method, is that sticking less loft on a shorter club, increases spin rate. This can make it very hard to work the ball either way consistently, and also cause huge problems when playing into any kind of wind, as its very difficult to control your ball flight.

A change of shaft can get round this, but the mass market will generally have no idea of the thousands of shafts available, and how much difference getting the right shaft can make. It is the single most important part of the club.

The good club player generally does not give a damn about distance. Yes, you want to maximise your own swing, and get as much performance as you can, but giving up a small amount of yards for the sake of accuracy is much better IMO.

There are plenty of "all the gear, no idea" golfers. There are also plenty who will tell you they hit the ball 300 yards regularly. Until you play with them. ;)
The average on the PGA tour last year was between 275-285 yards with the driver. Yet some jack the lad will claim he hits it 300+ regularly. really ?

Its never been about how far, its how many. Thats why you should work hard on your chipping and putting. A good putt can hide a whole bag of rubbish thats gone before.

:)

Yeh i understand what you are saying, i always laugh when im playing with friends if one of us hits a cracking tee shot way past everyone elses and feels really smug...but then ends up getting a 6/7 on that hole when everyone else gets a 4/5

:D
