A pull/hook or both can be caused by a swing that is too upright, same as a slice but the club face is closed through impact rather than open . It could also be caused by an inside-outside swing if you take the club too far inside on the backswing.

Could just be your timing, your arms may be getting ahead of your body.

As mentioned above, too many people have the ball too far left which causes pulls, so move it back in your stance and make sure your feet are not pointing too far right of the target

I'll give that ago, i'm doing 9holes on thursday night (i haven't been on a course with the new clubs yet) so i will try not to hook!

Gah i have really got the bug now, its pretty good having a course within walking distance as well :D

A good method of getting the right stance/ball position i have been taught (when using hybrids upwards) is to always have the ball in the same position in relation to the left foot (i.e. 2/3 inches in from the left heel) and just move the right foot closer to the left for wedge shots gradually getting a wider stance by moving your right foot further away from your left the lower down the clubs you go until you reach the 4/5i when you should be shoulder width apart and use that for any clubs lower than that.

If you use the above, you also need to make sure that you put the ball sufficiently far enough away from you for the club you are using, so for shorter irons it needs to be slightly closer gradually edging away as you work down the clubs (this was demonstrated at the range by taking the club you want to use, put the top of the blade behind your left heel with the shaft pointing away from you and putting the ball at the end of the shaft. Iron shafts get shorter the higher up you go, so the ball gets closer using this method).

Although, i could just be talking ********! :)

I play off 15, but only play about 6 times a year. The one tip I would give any new player is to keep your head still. A good way to practice is to stand with your feet together and practice your swing. If your head moves, it will with the rest of your body and you will overbalance. You want to be rock solid.

Finally !!

A golf thread. :D

I play off 5. My weapons of choice at the moment are:

Ping Rapture driver
MacGregor Mactec 5w
Mizuno Fli-Hi 18 degree Hybrid
Mizuno MP60 irons - 3 to PW
MIzuno MP-T Black Wedges. 53° & 60°
Putter - MacGregor GM 2
Ball - ProV1

Reserve bag.

Macgregor Mactec2 5w. (Different shaft/flight to above)
MacGregor Mactec Hybrid No. 4
Mizuno Fli-Hi 21 degree Hybrid
Cleveland 588 Wedges, all low bounce, 49, 51, 53, 56 & 60.

Once this game gets its claws in, it never lets go. :D

Tips are always subjective, but these may help.

Dont try to hit the ball harder, try to hit it better.

Best tip of all................

Work hard on your chipping and putting. Its the easiest thing to practice. Does not matter how far you hit it, if you can`t get it in the hole. Short game/putting will make the biggest difference to you scores.

Oh, and enjoy !!!!!

What is my Bag

Taylor Made SuperQuad 9.5 stiff
Taylor Made V Steel 3 wood 15 degree
Taylor Made 18 Degree Rescue club.
4-Pw Ping G10 (custom fitted green dots)
52 & 60 degree Mizuno Black Ox Wedges
Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Putter

Usually play Pro V1's.

Play off 11 at the moment - started the year at 13 but playing terrible all last year. A couple of lessons and have scored a couple of 68's in a row to get cut to 11.1. Just don;t get the time to play at the moment having moved house, busy job and various other things going on.

Love my golf and with a bit more time would love to get down to single figures.

Worst part of my game - erratic off the tee
Best part of my game - putting

Played with a guy off scratch the other day and he commented that i was the most consistent/best putter he has seen in years! Couldn't believe my handicapp until i lost 2 balls OB at the 13th hole!!!

May aswell list whats in my bag

Taylor Made R9 10.5 stiff
Taylor Made Burner fairway wood 15 degree
Mizuno MP-33 Irons 3-PW stiff
Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Wedges 52 56 60
Odyssey White Hot Tour #9 32"
Some crappy £10 putter (use this most of the time)

Ball, Nike One Platinum

In my bag

TM 425 Quad 10.5 degree
3 Wood - TM V-Steel 13degree
Rescue - 18 & 21 MD Golf
Irons - 3-PW TM RAS OS
Irons when I get brave : ) TM RAC TP Combo (3 iron is like a MB and the size of a 2p coin!)
Wedges - some cheap LW and a Snake Eyes Gap wedge
Putter - MD golf anser style thing

Depending on how i'm playing/what course etc i'll swap in various clubs to make 14, sometimes i'll go with 4 wedges and leave out long irons etc.

Slight issue in that i'm rubbish but can talk a good game :)

anyone recommend anything other than Pro v's??

I usually always have some around but having recently run out of Pro V's and really starting to choke on the £35 a dozen price, any good alternatives?

Like a fairly soft feeling ball - Ebay for pro v's does seem hit or miss with regards the quality or not of the ball

Last box I got were Callaway Tour i which felt soft but were about the price of Pro V1, other softish balls I have used recently are Callaway HX-Hot/Bite (got these in the US but think they are about £20 here), Srixon soft feel aren't too bad and can be had for ~£15 I think.

All the decent balls seem to be around that price range.

Was playing a round last week with a couple of mates and one of them was hitting this crappy Dunlop ball. Hit our approaches into the 1st green and his ball span straight back off the green. I was gobsmacked, so anyways i tried one on the next hole and sure enough, smashed a 9iron into the green and it came back a few feet. Turns out these balls are called Dunlop Loco Tour D and you can get a dozen for 10 quid lol

Yeah they aren't pro v1s and never will be but for £10 ive never seen a ball as good as that

No better place to mention it but here.

Yesterday i had a HOLE IN ONE :) 134yards 18th Hole took a SW looked close from tee, got to green no where to be seen, in the hole.

In next weeks local paper, and just received a tie from the golf club, cost me a pretty penny in drinks behind the bar :(

Anyway the reason i went out was to try my new putter, Nike Unitized putter, very impressed.

That was the ball i used for the hole in one.

Does the ball you use REALLY make such a big difference? What would a £30 set of callaway/nike balls have over a £10 set of pinicle/wilson?

I personally find that you really can tell the difference with the amount of spin and feel around the greens. Sometimes the difference isn't as much as people would like to think though (to be fair if you have just spend £30-40 on a pack of balls you want to think the best of them) :)

<snip>

grats!! i've never seen one on a course. closest i've come is holeing a 5 iron from about 170 for an eagle 2.

i've not played for over a year until last sunday - weather was pretty poor but i did ok considering I haven't been out for so long.

my official handicap i 19 but it's not quite right - i've done a 79 once before but my average is from 82 - 86, making me more of 15 - 16 player.

i've got a bit of a mish mash of clubs really, bought a set of wilson deep red fat shaft irons about 5 years ago and they're fantastic, got a mizuno mp1 driver and a couple of cheap woods, a cheap lob wedge, deep red hybrid rescue wood and a deep red putter.

re the balls they do make a difference especially as you get better, but if you're likely to loose them it makes it very painful if you spoon one into the trees. there are some callaway balls I used to use that were somewhere in the middle - HX Blue i think they were, they weren't as expensive as the pro v's but were also a bit soft to make it a bit easier around the green.

Grants on the hole in one :D

I'm playing in an hour and half, the first is about 130yard par 3. I've NEVER got on the green, it has two bloody bunkers right infront- guess where i end up :p (and yes i have gone up a club or two but i somehow always end up in it)
