Just back from a nice round.
Started with a double on the first but then finished the front 9 in 41. This included a Birdie on the 9th.
Back 9 finished with a 42 which also included a bogey bogey finish :( . My best mate could't believe I was disappointed with an 83

Pleasing today that driver was working a treat as was the 3 wood. Luckily there rain held off which made for a pleasing round.

Played Dundonald today - somehow dodged the terrible weather that was forecast... Couple of holes with rain but nothing major.

Texas Scramble - shot 4 under gross minus team handicap of 5.6 for 62.4. Greens are massive and huge sloping putts all the time - very very hard to putt on. Leading was 60 net I think.

I hit the ball awful again today - Amazing from yesterday hitting it well, to today. Like a 28 handicapper today.... Dreadful. Holed some good putts mind you.

1 triple and 3x doubles today, played some good stuff again otherwise today for 37pts, so that'll be another small cut I think..

Got a bit wet today on a few but the conditions weren't too bad, better than I was expecting!

Dundonald are the toughest greens I've ever played, if you land in the wrong spot it's a struggle to even get a 3 putt, I still have nightmares

If ever there was a round of two halves then today was it. Out, notionally, in 56 but back in 46 (a new PB) :p

Managed to get in a quick warm up before hand on the range but suspect that was a curse as much as a blessing. Hitting was all over the place and I could only hope I'd got all my bad shots out of the system. Started of OK with a par 3 at the 1st hole, a slightly shaky 9i of the tee which just made the green and a solid two putt. This was to be the highlight of the front nine. 2nd was OK, would have been a bogey but for a three putt. I had three of those plus one four putt going out! Unfortunately lost one of the tee on the 4th - a well struck 6i but directionally off and lost in the big bush that is in perfect distance on the right of the fairway. Then broke my rule of not getting a wood out on the tee of the 5th  First 3w shanked into a nearby tree and second topped into the water. I left it at that and dropped a ball into the fairway and played on from there - gave myself a 10 for that hole. My four putt came on the 211 yard par three 8th. Very annoying after my drive had come up just short of the green and I'd chipped on in two.

Back nine was a completely different story. Driving was solid throughout, putting much better bar a three putt on the last which cost me par - caught the putter on the green before making contact with the ball on my first putt. The 16th hole was the pick of the bunch. I'd joined up with another single from the 13th onwards who was of a similar standard and just getting back into golf. 16th has OB down the left but the 17th fairway opposes it so makes for a safe bailout zone with driver. With my big fade I often end up just on the 17th fairway and so it was on this occasion. A two ball had just tee'd off from the 17th as I got to my ball. Everyone watched in amazement as I took dead aim with my 7i for the second shot and hit the flag stick direct from around 142 yards :D A first and a last no doubt.

Still had some poor shots coming in so felt I could have scored better. So close to breaking 100 I fancy I might just skip straight to breaking 90 :p

That's amazing with the 7i shot mate, memorable stuff! Aside from that, sounds like there are loads of positives on the back9 to take forward to your next round.

Regarding warmups, personally I find that smashing balls on the range / net beforehand can be quite frantic if time constrained and I get myself quite worked up and it usually results in a poor start. For me, the warm up is all about smoothness and tempo. Mostly it's practice swings, some stretches and a couple balls hit into the net. Rest of the time is putting. Otherwise I get burned out really quickly.

If I want to do a proper warmup before a round then I'd take at least an hour so that there is no rushing, and to avoid burning out / teeing off with too much adrenaline in the system.

That's what works for me anyway

Yeah - I'm usually down around 30 minutes before tee off.

Couple of minutes stretching etc

Hit some putts - mainly just distance putts, not really aiming for them to go in.
Then 9-12 small chip shots - just like 10/15 yard one with my 58 degree
Then usually 9-12 shots in the net (usually 7 iron and about 80% swings)

then a few minutes sorting out the new SGU app which is a pain for sure, but that's usually it for me.

For me if I get time I like to hit the range and stretch. I used to use a 7i as my warm up club but have used my 6i lately just to get used to the extra length.

Followed by a few drives. Nothing to extreme. Enough to warm up. Maybe 20 balls in total if that.

I then go and have at least 20 puts. Different distances just to gauge the speed but then some puts within 3ft as these are the annoying misses for me.

Never practice chipping though. I should do tbh

And here we go....Club ties over next few weeks.

Singles ties tomorrow (2nd) and 9th May.
Doubles ties on 14th May

County Doubles 2nd round - 16th May
Presidents Putter Doubles (local grudge match) - 11th May.

Wife is NOT happy!!

And of course none of that counts out playing in the Saturday Medals....

So I played yesterday and it was utterly terrible, scored 120 which I think is the first 120 of the year on that course (the 'easy one'), which is annoying. Didn't post cause I was annoyed at myself for being so terrible :p

But... Having slept on it, and looked over the data, there's at least one positive in that my Driving was pretty damn good. Still not long, 209 max, but other than I think 2 drives they were all 200+ yards, and one of those 2 is a course where you don't need/try to go full with the Driver, if anything I should probably switch to 5 wood now.

Putting was terrible, 2.6 average.

Irons seem ok but the distance has gone, I suspect with no lesson/simulator stuff for a good while now I've reverted to out-to-in path with an open club face,

Worst bit was bunkers though, been struggling with them recently for some reason and I got in a bunker on the 1st and took 3 shots to get out, then on the 4th and again 3 shots, and the 11th and again 3 shots to get out. Actually lost my **** on the 4th hole/2nd bunker, proper meltdown and throwing the club, only for like 30s before calm again and kinda nice to get some rage out but still.

So yeah. Not good.

Gonna try and book a lesson/simulator session now my back is 'mostly fine', and probably pop down my local course to practice the bunkers. I know the general idea of bunker shots but clearly doing it all wrong right now and need to fix that stat. Or just avoid the bloody things in the first place.

Went out with my Dad for his first 9 of the season yesterday. Never known anyone to fall back into the groove like he can. Hasn't played for almost 5 months and he belts a 3 wood of the first tee 200+ yards with a baby fade. Ridiculous.

Played texas scramble and got round in 42. With my short game and his long irons we'd make a half decent player...

Lesson on Saturday went well. As suspected the lack of distance is down to my sway. Looked like the worlds best Elvis impersonator when he played the vid back to me...

It's always great when they video you and you watch it back, I swear it's not me, they must use AI to generate it or something :p

Booked an hour in the simulator for tomorrow lunchtime... Thought about lesson but feel like I know just enough to interpret the numbers from the simulator and make some tweaks to go back towards where I was, hopefully. I'll book another lesson for the week after.

Short game lesson this morning.

I was getting super inconsistent with my 50 -70 yard shots - went to see what was happening.

Come away feeling much better. I was standing too close to the ball, and was WAY to "handsy"/breaking wrists very early. So try and turn shoulders more and not break wrists so soon. Much better contact etc (also nice to have lesson outside on grass!!)

Will see how we get on later in tie.

first proper go in my new "simulator", it only takes five minutes to setup / dismantle which im quite happy the way I have done things.

the MLM2 Pro is a great bit of kit, I mainly want it for my spin numbers and carry to dial in my clubs, but the software is still horrendous, they really need to get some app / firmware updates going and then I think it will be a winner.

4&3 win in tonights singles tie. Off yellow (front) tees. Played fairly well, putted very good.

Was getting 6 shots overall.... Guy I was playing 74 years old - playing off 1.5 handicap still....
Insanity, most of the old boys have a short game of gods and don’t miss a fairway.

to be fair - he hits a long ball still - His driver was my 3 wood distance.... Flat ball flight, very tidy short game, can really get those "nippy" wedges to check up etc. He's been a very very good player for many years.

It's crazy. I sometimes play with an old boy on Sundays, to look at him you'd think a breathe of wind would have him over. Plays in one of those mobility buggies that you can stick clubs on, drives to within 3 yards of every shot, plays it then gets back in almost not bothering to check where it's gone. Only walking he does is on and around the greens and he has the shallowest, wonkiest swing I've ever seen. Guaranteed to fly the ball arrow straight every time and his putting... a little wrinkled Fitzpatrick.

Short game pointers for me from yesterdays lesson.

First image - less wrist cocking required - more shoulder turn/arms needed - this should promote a more consistent strike as less wrist/handys (Red circle bad, yellow good)

Second image - more room needed, feel like I'm reaching for the ball more, create more room for club to move into.....

Can see a big difference there! From 100yds in I'm shocking, I could be back to single figures if I could that part of my game consistent.

I might need to have my first ever lesson...
