Can see a big difference there! From 100yds in I'm shocking, I could be back to single figures if I could that part of my game consistent.

I might need to have my first ever lesson...

Always amazes me that people can be self taught to the point they reaching single figures. Are you self taught through YouTube or did you just pick it up naturally? I know that was the case for @magicroundabout , that man can play and he's only ever had one lesson and even that was just to help him compensate for an injury!

Maybe it's because of my dyslexia but unless I'm given specific feels and instructions I just can't adapt. Then only thing I've ever been naturally decent at was chipping.

Quick Q:
My new club doesn't allow me to practice from the white tees. I was shouted at by one of the green keepers today, as he thought he had already told me to get off them last week (he hadn't)
My current club is fairly short compared to many courses, which I thought I'd be satisfied with, but perhaps not. Time will tell I guess.

Most of the time when I play before work, I just go up to get some exercise, practice some new swing thoughts and look to improve. Challenging myself by playing off the whites is also something I would have enjoyed doing more, but looks like they are reserved only for competitions.

Anyone else's club do the same?

Yeah I played a tonne of cricket as a kid which although wildly different have a lot of similarities with the swing.

My dad pretty much told me what I'd do wrong/right so then just tried to recreate the "feel" - only reason I slipped out of single figures was injury as I couldnt walk a full 18 and my game was painful from the 2nd hole usually.

Short game pointers for me from yesterdays lesson.

First image - less wrist cocking required - more shoulder turn/arms needed - this should promote a more consistent strike as less wrist/handys (Red circle bad, yellow good)

Second image - more room needed, feel like I'm reaching for the ball more, create more room for club to move into.....

I've been told I have a compact swing where my hands are too close to my body as well. When I try to setup with hands further from my body it feels like I'm playing left handed almost....like total loss of control. I tried it with a driver the other day as well and stuck my butt out and lent much more forward which is supposed to add distance.... didn't hit one clean shot. :(
I feel like I was better at golf generally when I just accepted my - probably poor - swing and just played. It's recently that I have been trying to sort things out and introducing changes that it's all gone to pot. I guess we all have to go through this though to improve. I used to be able to hit 270 yard drives a month or so ago. I went down the range the other day and could not get it past 225. I've only tried to change a couple of things. :O

white tees' are generally reserved for medals/comp/ties etc at mine - People shouldn't be playing from them on their own.

my changes above are only really related to my short game.

My pro said there is nothing wrong with having 2 "swings" - chipping/pitching and then a normal swing for driver/irons etc.

Cheers!

Didn't know this. Another golf thing that I should have known, but don't - by coming from a terribly run golf club last season. :p
Still happy though, only had time for 7 holes, shot 2 over on those, from white tees (oops)

It's a bit more chillaxed at our place, never had any bother from anyone when playing off the whites by myself or in a bounce game.

Generally speaking though, I agree the majority of places don't encourage practice from the medal tees

Some solid stuff again today, Wed medal, stroke play off the whites and went round in 77 for a nice 6 under nett. Breaking 80 is now becoming a habit!

Wasn't brilliant off the tee today but my ball striking and iron approach play was on fire.

Holed a nice 85 yard gap wedge approach for a birdie after my drive went in the trees and my 2nd shot was for getting back into position. I didn't see it go in as the green is uphill and the flag was right at the back on the top tier. Everyone in the clubhouse saw it though!

Another slash incoming!!! Congrats.

I play off 8 amd have only had a few lessons in recent years for specific issues. Got to 6 self-taught. It helps to play with better golfers than yourself; you can learn a huge amount about course management from such people. YouTube wasn't around when I was really trying to improve.

Had my simulator session today, my thoughts were that my swing had probably reverted to 'out-to-in' but actually it quickly became apparent that it the path was solid, after a bit of warmup I did 10 shots with my 7 Iron and my average path was 2 degrees in-to-out, and I think they were all in-to-out to various degrees with no out-to-in at all, so very happy with that path! Face was open though regularly, and more importantly my clubhead speed and angle of attack was way out, think largely I've lost the 'width' of the swing so less speed, less down, less good :p

Still love the numbers!

Made some improvements but nothing major over the session, spent a fair bit of the time just playing some holes in it rather than just range, good fun and some good shots, especially with my wedges weirdly...

Got a busy weekend coming up, if a little damp potentially, got rounds booked on Friday, Sunday (Cumberwell Park, shiny new, to me, course!) and Monday followed by now a lesson on Tuesday morning. Gonna be dead :p I do have a sports massage booked after the game on Friday, looking forward to see how that goes really.

Also, not sure I mentioned it, but after someone here posted the golfpairs.com link I've gone and booked the St. Pierre Singles round on the 20th June, and now thinking about various others as well :D

I think that's one thing holding me back. I always hear that playing with better players in one way or another rubs off on you, but everyone I play with is either 70+ playing just to fill the days or friends who come along just to keep me company.

I should join a club really but that's just not financially possible at the moment.

Do yourself a favour and verify your yardages outside versus the sim (and thus, indirectly, clubhead speed); very easy to fall foul of 'indoor swing syndrome' and lose speed inside.

It was the outside yardages that prompted the sim session if that makes sense?

I was seeing a noticeable drop-off in yardages with the irons out on the course so felt my swing, which isn't great at the best of times, had 'regressed' a bit with a back injury meaning I dropped off basically all practice and just played rounds. Like I said I had thought my swing had gone back to out-to-in, which in my first simulator session it was like 10+ degrees out-to-in with a very open club face, but instead the path was good, club face was indeed still open a bit but not 'too bad', and it was the speed that was suffering.

Obviously the test will be on the course tomorrow, the simulator was more a case of just getting some numbers to see what was happening as I'm not good enough, maybe never will be, to analyse my own swing in that way to know *what* is going wrong, I can just see from the Garmin that *something* isn't quite right... Does that make sense?

Ah, fair enough. Does make sense - if you've got two data points confirming each other, then fair to say something is there.

I struggled when I first got my launch monitor because the yardages were a fair bit off what I thought they should be; but, no, turns out I'm just swinging it like a geriatric at the moment. I had a rotator cuff injury a few years ago and I'm still yet to recover the speed; I was around 107+ clubhead, now it's a real struggle to get to 100.
I've recently started a regime of stretches and exercises to get my flexibility back, but I think there's an element of confidence in swinging hard, too; I did my injury while playing golf, so think there's a subconcious element of fear of doing it again.

See from what I've watched on various YouTube channels it was a case of get into your stance and let your hands fall.
Where they settle is where you hold the club. It's always felt natural for me.

Your second set of pics has your hands far to close to your body. As you've seen told. It'll feel very strange to adjust. Should you adjust?
Playing off 8 I'm more concerned with the Pro wishing to change your swing rather than tweak it.
Adjusting your starting position is a major change.

If you're like me. I watch YouTube and try to replicate it. I've always been sporty so it kind of makes sense.
Once you have a lesson showing what you're doing wrong that's it for me. I work on it.

Mark Crossfield has some good vids on short game. Worth a watch

It felt a little weird for sure - like I'm reaching for it. To be fair, my normal swing/postion for full shots, I have plenty of space with my hands. I think it's just over the years, I've "got away with" my pitching/50/70 yard shots by being very handys but the inconsistency of a bad short game off say 13/14 - you can get away with, off 7 or 8, I can't (less shots to play with)

The changes in the picture are only for short game/chipping etc - He's happy for me to have a slightly different swing/setup for full shots and then another for pitching etc.

Well, after some debating and being able to access Rapsodo's website now, I am taking back my 4 or 3 offer on the Srixons, and going to get the refund towards a 12 pack of the official Callaway RPT balls..

The debating has come as there is a lot of questioning on the accuracy of the "sticker pack" and durability. I will get the 12, so 15 in total and when I get the pack of stickers from the US I will "test" them out on my new, but bought for "hacking away" V300 balls.
