Golf Thread

Quick question for all the golfers - How often would/do you use:

- A divot repair fork
- A ball marker
- A stroke counter
- A club groove/face cleaner
- A shoe spike wrench

Asking as I'm gift shopping for the bro-in-law, who plays golf quite a bit.

Never use a shoe spike wrench. I wear spikeless.

I'n order:
  1. Club grove cleaner. Use this after every shot
  2. Ball Marker
  3. Divot repair tool
  4. Stroke counter

Just waiting on the final piece of the jigsaw arriving this week and my bag is set (for the moment!)

Divot repair and ball marker - every green. - Got a few "fancy" ones from various places but this is a cheap and simple one I've got - Divot tool
I've got a wire brush/soft brush I use when needed on the face of my clubs. Brush

All my shoes are soft spike/spikeless so don't need a wrench.

Bag is set for the year for me. Don't see any changes.

Driver - Ping G425 LST 9 Degree - Ventus velocore Blue TR 6-X
3 Wood - Ping G425 - Stiff Tensei Orange (14.5)
7 Wood - Ping G425 - X Stiff Ping Tour (20 degrees)
4 iron - Cobra King Utility Driving Iron - Set at 21.5 degrees
5-GW - Mizuno 921 Forged Stiff N S PRO 105 shaft (2 degrees upright and 0.5" longer)
54/58 Mizuno T22 Denim cooper wedges - Dynamic Gold tour issue shafts
Putter (my baby) - 2007 Scotty Cameron STUDIO STYLE NEWPORT 2
Ball - Pro V.

I know there's not much "seperation" in terms of loft degrees between 7 wood and 4 iron but they play so different. There is around 15-20 yards between them which is ideal.

As others the divot repair fork is number 1, ball marker as well and club cleaner brush (varies with weather it seems :p)... I don't use a stroke counter or have need yet for a spike wrench.

Saying that, those are things I have, and really don't have much need for another one... Maybe the brush as they do wear, or I guess ball marker if it's 'special' in some way.

I'd maybe add towel on there, during winter especially I use 2 per round and now have 4 so I can alternate between pairs. But still don't need anymore now...

Driver - Callaway Mavrik Max - 10.5 degrees at standard - Project X Hzrdus Stiff
5 Wood - Callaway Mavrik - 18 degrees fixed - Project X Hzrdus Regular
3 Hybrid - TaylorMade Burner Rescue - 19 degrees - dunno shaft
6-PW - Spalding Tour 2 randomness from my cheapo package set, only clubs remaining from the set
Wedges - Lazrus set in black, 52, 56 and 60 degree
Putter - TaylorMade Spider GT Rollback
Ball - Anything I find :p I'm trying to stick to Srixon Soft Feel as much as possible but also got some AD333 and Vice Pro Plus 'lakeballs' to try out.

Feels like my Hybrid and 5-wood are too close, especially with my extremely variable swing, got a 4 hybrid from the Spalding set I didn't really get on with and a mate is borrowing but might swap that back in to see if it fits better.

Planning Irons next year as mentioned, and may look into hybrid or something then, problem is I don't like the look of Hybrids, I much prefer a fairway wood in terms of looks behind the ball tbh.

Some guy called Scotty Cameron is making it for me :D Super Select Squareback 2 Putter.

Realised yesterday now that I can hit my driver, I'm going to have to work on my short game even more. Probably would have still broken 90 for the first time if it wasn't for a few howler holes.

Always used my 5 iron into par 4's giving myself a long shot to the green on the 2nd shot which I was okay with because it's what I've been used to. Now I'm punting my driver 280+ yards, the shorter par 4's are trickier because I'm now having to play shots that I'm totally not used to.

Quite frustrating that when you fix one part of your game, it highlights issues with other parts! :D

Just got back from a lesson, I'd basically paused the lessons, and dropped practice to basically zero, because of my back issues but it's a bit better so wanting to get back to that side of things.

So as I'd mentioned I'd noticed on course that my distances with the irons had definitely reduced a bit and my first thought was path/club face, but in the simulator last week I was pleasantly surprised that my path was actually really good at averaging 2 degrees in-to-out, although my club face was a bit open but that doesn't really explain the distant loss really so the culprit seemed to be the width during the swing.

Anyway, and really just having someone look at the swing, some video and analysis etc pretty quickly showed the real issue which was that I simply wasn't turning my shoulders enough. Makes perfect sense really as I obviously adapted to try to protect my back and not 'twisting' as much was part of that. Yes I also bring the hands too far in/close to the shoulder/losing that width which is a recurring problem but that was massively exacerbated by not turning enough.

So a few swings turning a bit more, one bit of advice there as well was to lift my head a bit, I wear glasses so I think I've got used to looking down a fair bit so the ball is central in the lenses but that does kinda get my face/chin in the way, so lifting my head a bit helped. I did start feeling my back a bit as well though so yeah...

All good then, and actually started to see some decent improvement, and probably best thing is all through this my path and even face was in a pretty good state, bit inconsistent (face more so, club path was pretty consistently in-to-out, sometimes too much so) but happy with all that.

Then we started moving more onto angle of attack and getting weight transfer going a bit, I was surprised how much I could feel/hear the angle of attack, if I got a nice downward strike it's just different, hit some really nice ones.

Good to get back to the lessons really, yes the simulator gives a bunch of numbers but it can and did still miss the underlying causes so just having someone I know/get on with guiding my through a practice session basically is really good.

well guys, I received the dots for the Rapsodo MLM2 Pro today, and applied one to a cheap Slazenger V300 ball, just to test it out.

YJ2QxPb.jpg

I can confirm they work, and work very well, obviously distance is less than the Callaways, but at the end of the day the V300 is a budget (very budget) ball. But the bad news is the durability, had a short session (maybe an hour) and the ball is already starting to lose the dot patterns. :(

I might try leaving them longer though, incase they take time to bond to the ball, I dunno?

Its a funny game, I was working on a few things, and near the end, I tried to not "fight" my natural swing, I have a fast and full swing, and when I follow through with that, I time the ball sweetly, not to mention a few more yards which is always nice.

So I will be working on a few things I was taught at my lesson (its hard to justify £1 per minute ) and I don't think it will take me too long to get into form (hopefully).

Oh, and the Rapsodo is ace guys, they are rolling out a lot of firmware / software updates atm to rectify some significant bugs and issues, I am contemplating getting "Awesome Golf" for it as the general software or interface of the MLM2 is not the greatest.

But yeah, anyone on a budget, give the MLM2 a look, for sure!

If those dots are just black can you not draw them on with a sharpie?

I have seen a plastic surround, kinda how you would put round your ball to mark it, so you know what's yours...but I don't think it works, think they are 3D printed.

I have just ordered some official RPT balls, and will use the dots I have, not wanting to spend much more on balls, just wanna get playing now!

Well, last shot at the range completely cracked the crown of my Great Big Bertha. My own fault really. Sold to me second hand from a reputable site online, scratch on the crown which I was promised wasn't a crack... hope there refund policy is decent.

Damn shame. Really like the driver and finally had the confidence to use it off the tea recently. Broke 100 with it :(

Too commemorate it here's a vid for you all to pick apart. Feedback welcome for when I get my next weapon.

Only thing I may change is the Driver or the Putter, driver I can comfortably hit big slinging draws or baby fade fairway finders it's by far the most consistent club in my bag.

For me, Ive replaced my M2 Driver and 5 Wood and thinking of either TM or Titleist T100 irons soon. Ive really got to start practicing again as ive hit double figures again, local range has TopTracer so I at least have a fairly steady system to keep progress on.

can I ask, if your driver is your most consistent club, why would you change that? driver for 90% of people is the club that is probably the hardest to hit well on a regular basis?

Damn - hope you get it sorted....

With the swing video - two things that jump out to me - main one: You need to shorten that swing - you are WAY WAY too long in the back swing. Up to parallel maybe, but don't be going past there. You gain very little in distance, but loose so much control being that "long" - Look at Finau or Rahm - look where they top out their swing compared to yours...

Second - might be the angle of the video/camera - but you seem to take the club away massively outside the line. Need to be less up and out on the way back.

But mainly - that swing needs to be shorten for sure.

Not criticizing you - just pointing out a couple of very obvious things I see !!
