Golf Thread

Me and the kids had a visit from a very bold fox cub when we were getting ready to tee off on the par 3 the other day.

I don't mind Rick Shiels- he does well for himself and posts some decent stuff on youtube.....

However - his game is awful at the moment for a "teaching" professional and I'm not sure why he continues to post "break 75" videos when I don't think he's broken 75 in months/last year on video etc.

Shoots 85 in his latest video (sorry for spoiler!) - yet persists on posting Break 75 videos...

Finally actually watched this, it seems maybe a bit harsh as his game was clearly far far worse than normal...

But, you're right in that he rarely actually makes 75 or better, probably an argument for break 80 but at the same time he does actually do that fairly regularly so would just be him playing golf :p

I do find him a bit 'whiny' when he's not playing well tbh, I think I watch the videos more for Guy who seems to be a bottomless pit of positivity :)

His mindset is a lot better then it was in his videos this time last year. Had to turn a few off as he was becoming a bit of a downer when he wasn't playing well. Now he just seems to get on with it. Must be difficult though, especially with the pelting he gets on Twitter and FB when he throws up a vid shooting 80+.

So last week I played in the club stableford comp on Wednesday, it's done such that you play anytime during the week and hand in the card then they sort out all the scores on the Saturday. Now I'm back home I've just checked and I scored 40 points and came 7th... Bandits ahoy

Playing again on Friday this week, which will probably have harder tees/pins than Wednesday but hey.

True, from memory some of his worst bits were when playing without Guy, I do think Guy helps his mood a bit so kinda glad he's a more regular fixture on the break 75's. Also the 'break 65s' when they play a scramble helps him as well...

Had a simulator session booked today to do a gapping session with the new Irons, and everything else, but it kinda failed :p They've only just had AC fitted but it's not yet on and it's just too damn hot...

Think I got reasonable-ish numbers for my wedges:
  • 60 degree - 39 yards
  • 56 degree - 56 yards
  • 52 degree - 70 yards
But I think it's around that point the heat/sweat started getting to me. I did get 80 yards for my PW but then really really struggled with my 9 Iron and basically gave up, did the bare minimum to get to the last screen and get those numbers.

The Lamkin grips that came on the Wilson Dynapowers seem to be garbage with sweaty hands, thankfully one of the things I was there for was to get the new grips fitted, which are hopefully better... Went for Golf Pride MCC+4's in Orange :D

Did get some better numbers out of the clubs above the irons but by then I was melting and just meh. Got it over with, took some pictures of the results and left.

I'll do a proper gapping session when it's cooler/they've got the AC working

Hmmm those numbers appear quite short?

If you're using trackman or foresight/gc quad, take a look at your clubface and path numbers.
Swing speed?
Launch angle?

Be good to get a full picture for analysis.

Just to give you a side by side, although I don't have the same wedge lofts as you, but here are my carry numbers:

60 - 80 yards
54 - 95 yards
50 - 105 yards
PW - 115 yards

Those are 90% shots with a solid contact and a pretty square face on impact.

I didn't have the tracking dots on for those clubs, only the 7i and Driver but by then I was done with everything and wanted to get back into the AC'd car :p

I am quite short in general, a combination of not particularly fast club speed, generally an open face and also not really 'compressing the ball' (as in a downward strike). For reference my PW is currently averaging a total of 110 yards, in hot conditions where it runs at least a bit...

That's kinda where my lessons are focussing when I do them, getting the clubhead closed at impact and getting the weight transfer/hips moving to hit down on the ball nicely. I doubt I hit any of those like that, especially the 60 degree and 56 degree as I don't use them for full shots so didn't focus too much on them but tried to get a reasonable set of 3 shots for the 52 as that's where I thought there was/is a gap.

That's good. keep at it bud - it'll come over time.
I personally think you need to learn how to hit full shots for clubs lower than a PW, as that's where people score well (within 100y).

That's kinda why I wanted to do the gapping session, and like I said will do so properly when I can grip the club

With my previous iron set I used the PW for basically anything <100 yards, that short game bit that's so important. I basically had a couple of 'swings' for different distances, 30 yards, 50 yards, 65-70 yards etc. It worked but it's not great really as it leaves a fair bit of potential error.

Now I'm kinda struggling with the other issue of my new PW on course/total is >100 yards whilst my 52 degree that I'm now using a lot more is struggling to get there.

FWIW my 52 degree (and other wedges other than PW) are the Lazrus ones that Rick Shiels recently reviewed, I didn't really use them for full shots before but now I'm trying to obviously and I think I'm finding like his review that the shafts are a bit suspect. They're great around the green but just not gelling with them for full shots, I hit one somehow that went 130 yards total (didn't see it land but seemingly not that much roll/freaky bounce) but then also struggle to get 70 yards total sometimes. Given my new PW is 42 degrees I was contemplating replacing the 52 at least with a 'decent' wedge but maybe more like a 50 or even 48 to fit in the gap...

A piece of advise that's helped my short game significantly this year came from Golf Sidekick. He talked about the importance of half shots with wedges and how they basically add 3 extra clubs to your bag that can be utilized within 100 yards.

I start and finish my range sessions with those shots now and it's definitely helped around the greens. Of course, hitting half shots is a technique all of it's own, but it's still something I'd recommend us high handicappers practicing. We loose so many shots within 100 yards.

Guesses for the US OPEN winning score?? Course looks crazy tough with loads of tee options on some holes including one par 3 that could be 290 yards and another which could be as short as 80 yards!!

Winning score -4 for me

Excited to watch...

Homa/Brooks/McCarthy and Burns all each way are my picks

In that case I'll take Rahmbo on -9 :p

Kinda like the idea of an 80 yard par 3 for the pros, it's not like distance is an issue for them really so why not mix it up...

Although I'd love to see Fleetwood win

Dead chuffed for Rickie Fowler to be playing his best stuffed again. He comes across as one of the nicer guys on tour and he's had a baron few years.
