Played Team Match yesterday for our club.... (handicap team) - Crazy to think I get sent out first these days as the low man (6.4)!!! 3 years ago I was usually last out off 13 !!

Tough conditions, links course (lochgreen) - windy and some rain.... Guy I was playing was off 3. Super solid player, was -1 thru 9 holes and I was 5 down!

Good comeback - I birdied 11 with a shot for a net 2 (he birdied as well and lost the hole) - par net bridie on the next, good par on the next to suddenly cut his lead to 2 up.

Lipped out on the next to win the hole - stayed 2 down. Bit unlucky at par 3 15th - 195 flag, into the strong wind and across a bit... Nailed 5 iron.... flew straight at the flag but about 10 yards long in the rough at the back.... Literally untouched by the wind. Got up and down for the half, but then lost on 16th 3&2.

Happy to battle back from 5 down - please with the mental strength to do that. Struggling off the tee at the moment- mid season - total lack of practice at the moment, not been at the range in months. Off on holiday next week as well.....Need to find time next year for practice during the summer etc.

sounds like a great match! I really do need to figure out a way of watching some of these better player matches and watch how you all do it :)

I'm generally delighted if I hit my driver 245 yards!
Oh so am I! Hugely!

But then again, a 250~ 5 Iron isn't a 'wow' moment for me in these super dry conditions we've had over the last month!
I hit my 3w probably the best I ever hit it today, 262yds , uphill with some serious rollout. I know for sure that it's not something I can get used to and shouldn't leave it get to my head, but it happened. Once the ground gets back to the usual UK-type ground, it'll be back to the norm of 220 max

5 iron?? Even an elevated tee that's an insane distance for a 5 iron

Links course which is still firm and it took a big bounce off the top of a mound. My 5 iron is normally around 220-230 yards when I catch it right. My height gives me the bigger swing so distance doesn't really worry me - it's the control and consistency that's my Achilles heel just now.

Well that was a dire weekend of golf from me.

Went to the driving range on Friday and all seemed good and then onto Saturday's round....

Arrived with 20mins to spare so primarily warmed up on the putting & chipping greens as my short game has been lacking somewhat. This may have been my downfall as my swing seemed stiff from the range session the day before.

Started with quad bogeys on the first two holes only to par the third for the first time with a lovely drive and iron shot onto the green only for the 12ft birdy putt to lip out. This proved to be one of the few highlights of the round resulting in a dreadful score of 107. A far cry from the 94 a couple of weeks ago.

In general the putting was much improved and the driving & chipping were steady but today my irons deserted me with some monster slices & fats.

So need to get back down to the range however I suspect it was the lack of depth creeping back into my swing which resulted in me over compensating at times.

Had great fun at the BM on Sunday at the Belfry. Very chilled and saw some fantastic shots. Followed Min Woo Lee for much of his round then settled on the 14th for pretty much the rest of the day watching the groups filter through. Managed to get a few signatures including Min Woo, Oleson and Hill. Was amazed at how well organized it was overall.

Finally booked myself in for a Driver centric lesson on Saturday, put it off for far too long and it's the one part of my game I still feel completely at odds with.

Looking for recommendations on golf breaks within the UK if anybody has any? Got next week off and would like to get away for a few days if possible. All the packages I've seen so far seem to be a max of two night stays and three rounds of golf. Would be nice to find something a bit longer and ideally within a few hours drive of home, I live on the coast (West Sussex). Travelling solo.

Two I've looked at in particular:
https://www.thebelfry.com/offers/2-nights-3-rounds/
(don't know if they have any availability, wouldn't want to travel much farther than this)

Can be difficult mid summer to get tee times etc - Try arranging your own - look for "open comps" that might tie in your travel - dirt cheap way to play courses.

Matchplay last night in our club comp - Stutt Cup.

Front tee's - I was getting 1 shot.

Good game up to the 7th - all square. Then suddenly I was 4 down loosing 8/9/10/11. - I lost a ball on 9 but apart from that didn't do much wrong. He birdied 8, then par 9/10/11.

I won 12 & 13 (with my only shot). He won 14, we halfed 15, I won 16 to be 2 down with 2 to play. Then hit my worst putt of the night on 17th leaving it about 8 ft short..... then missed it so he won 3&1.

Good game - I think he was not far off level par / +1. Does go to show however - He's a very good ex cricketer.... Plays with a baseball grip, and has a "bag of spanners" as he calls them for clubs - literally all sorts of old clubs in there - titleist 975D driver!!! / daewoo wedge, adams rescue club etc. You don't need the latest and greatest gear to be a very solid player.

Matchplay comps all over now for me this year - I think lack of "practice" in the summer months has certainly come back to haunt me and I'm still not feeling like a 6.4 handicap player - Whilst the scores in medals obviously bring my handicap to that level, I don't feel I've got the overall game of a 6/7 handicap player yet. Still a struggle off the tee at times. Irons are excellent, like auto pilot, and short game has improved a lot.

Awesome! Get ready to start hooking your Driver :p

Already on that see-saw. Driver used to be most consistent club in the bag, then I started this iron journey a while back and I might as well be holding a banjo on the tee for how foreign it feels.
But the only important thing about golf is being able to rip a 7-iron in to a net, right? ...right?

I feel you. Had nothing longer then a 4 iron in the bag these past two months so I could attempt to dial in some sort of control. Went out last week and put the 3 wood in for laughs as it was team scramble. Haven't lost so many ball for a long time... some of the most glorious duck hooks we'd ever seen.

Is there any logic/reasoning as to why when one part of your game starts to come together, the rest suffers? The only thing that's been consistent for me is putting.

My long irons were always my strongest part, wedges second, then driver.

Driver started getting better, irons came second, then wedges.

Now my wedges are absolutely solid, driver second, then irons bar the odd pure strike.

Only played a few of times in the past 5 or 6 weeks but for some reason my wedges are deadly whereas before, I'd be thinning them or getting too underneath the ball and wasting a shot. Anything within 100 yards now I'll be able to get it into a very putt-able position 9 times out of 10, but now I can't hit my irons worth a toss and my driver is so sporadic. I've had lessons in everything bar approach/short game which is now my strongest area- I've come out of all the lessons hitting it 100 times better but now back to struggling with those parts.

Just don't get it and it's so frustrating. Start to feel like I'm getting somewhere just to get dragged back again. :(

I'd love it if there were some reasoning behind it... :p

But yeah, same here and by the posts here/reddit seems everyone gets it. For me it's not even like a 'this month my X worked well' thing, I've got 3 games over the weekend and they could all be different strengths/weaknesses, I have no idea how it's gonna go

Think it's just a subconscious adjustment to one area or another. Golfs hard and consistent golf across clubs is even harder when you can only practice/play once or twice a week.

Think everyone here will be able to relate. I've mastered the flop shot but can't hit a driver to save my life... utter madness.

Putting on a 4 ball. Do you have a set etiquette as to how to do it? The other day I always felt rushed and just that nobody followed order. Bit of a bundle to just get it done, and then people walking off always to the next hole as I was finishing up. Constantly being asked if I want the flag in or out whilst I'm down on the shot. People taking their putts as I'm taking mine. Should I just get on with it? I'm easily distracted I find. :(

Also gimmes. This winds me up. I'd rather play no gimmes ever. The amount of cheating and lying to yourself or each other about your score that goes on with gimmes is silly. I would say 70% of the gimmes I saw given when I played the other day were totally missable.

It can be a bit awkward/variable I think, I've played in groups where everyone marks and then putts in order from furthest away (except for the 'I'll just tap this in' bits), and others where it's just chaos :p

I personally don't mind being last off the green so if it's chaos and I want some time/peace I'll mark and wait for others to do whatever they want and then go at the end. Otherwise just act the same, there's one guy particularly I play with who will putt without a care what others are doing and I just give him the same 'respect' he gives others, not yet had the balls hit each other on the green but it's only a matter of time

With gimmes I can understand that, and I think it's fair to just say you don't do gimmes and always putt in yourself and then it's other peoples problems that you don't have to care about... Assuming their score doesn't mean anything to you. FWIW the rules are in strokeplay there are no gimmes, end of.
