Golf Thread

Been making a lot of progress lately which feels awesome. I've found the confidence in my driver to start using it on the course now and it rapidly dropped my scores. Between that and a lot of trips to the local par 3 my approach game has grown a lot recently as well. Shot a 107 at Ruddington last Thursday then a 106 at Stonebridge on saturday.

Stonebridge really should have been my break 100 round, I was walking into the 9th on just +10, annoyingly there is a body of water just before the green and nerves bested me, sadly lose 2 balls in it. Add in I played safe after and went around after losing 2, that alone should have saved me 7 shots.

Finally picked up my pings last night after returning the taylormades a few weeks back when the 7i came off just 8 days after getting them. I was loaded some standard length 6.5 t100s so considering I was also using clubs I really shouldn't have been for my recent rounds it gives me even more hope to break 100 very soon now I have forgiving fitted clubs.

I know breaking 100 isn't a huge achievement but I played my first ever round of golf on the 14th May so incredibly happy with the quick progess.

Off to Ruddington this afternoon, first time using the pings on course (I used them at the range last night), so not hopefully I will break 100 but I'll be trying my best for sure.

Also why did no one warn me how expensive golf can get? Got ruddington tonight and saturday then Nottinghamshire on Monday booked, as well 2 rounds in Essex next weekend! The missus is well and truely becoming a golf widow.

Breaking 100 is definitely good progress! I'd be super happy with that for someone who hasn't been playing long. Onwards and upwards, onto breaking 90 in the future! :)

@Snookums basically the same as MarkA, breaking 100 is definitely 'a thing' :)

I've been playing 'way longer' at almost a year (mid-August) and only broken 100 once, that was over a month ago now as well, but I can see/feel 'soon' <100 will feel like a normal round, just like now a ~105 feels like a normal round when I started out in the >120's :p

I think that's what's really got me hooked on golf, I could play for another 5 years and be a significantly better player but there will always be goals to chase/achieve...

Assuming I don't go bankrupt before then, it's a bit costly innit

I've spent the last week emptying the garage and building massive shelving from floor to ceiling to house all of household gear.
Several trips to the dump later, the garage is looking way better and it's about time I get the projector and impact screen setup I've wanted for awhile.

Anyone know of a solid golf simulator impact screen?

Shot 90 in terrible conditions last night which felt both great and irritating. Best score so far but definitely left a few out there, annoyingly in the short game which is usually a strength. Drivers back in the bag now after a few lessons to fix a bit of flexion in the lead wrist on the downswing. Still not 100% happy with it but I don't suppose I ever will be.

@Snookums breaking 100 is definitely a worthy goal! A few of the better players I go round with always claim that the journey to breaking 90 is absolutely the most satisfying part of the hobby as after then it becomes a real grind. Most casual players either loose interest or just die before breaking 80 so make the most of the progress whilst it's 'easy'

Took another 9 shots off my previous best shooting 109. Did pretty good on the opening 9 and I know that I can easily get below 100, six 3 putts and two 4’s weren’t good, sloppy wedge shots and some fat shots, which wasn’t me when I played in the past. One plus is I never lost a ball and mainly kept the ball in a straight line.
Playing a different course next week, so anything could happen. :D

Played an interesting game today, it was a fundraiser for the club where a mate plays/the Society games usually are and it was also a Texas Scramble with a Shotgun start, both are new to me...

I thought I'd really love a scramble cause I'm not the most consistent by a long way but when I hit it nicely I can get some really nice shots in, so you'd think that'd be great but kinda felt a bit 'disconnected' from it if that makes sense? We had to use 4 tee shots from everyone and I have to admit by the ~5th hole having used none of mine (one was looking promising but somehow lost the ball :() so we ended up using a 'not ideal' one on a par 3, second best tee shot but got one on the cards. I then hit several really good tee shots that were worth taking on merit, and really there was one where if we hadn't taken that first would've been way better and saved us a shot.

Shotgun start was kinda cool especially from the sense of coming up the 18th and not being a the end of the round :p We started on the 4th so not exactly too different really but hey.

Overally though it was a good day out, nice group even though I'd only met/played with one of them before, we had my mates Uncle (~80+ ish) and a 'random' 8 handicapper, always useful :D

We had a handicap of 16 and shot +3 gross, think the winning score was a couple of shots better but hey.

Tomorrow got the weekly comp (stableford) at Woodlands, should be good :)

The velcro straps on my electric golf trolley have lost their edge, I purchased some straps which clip together, but they’re not the right ones for the fitting on my cart. Thinking of trying bungee straps as they have a hook on the end, anyone have any experience of using them to hold a golf bag onto a golf trolley or can recommend something similar?

Not quite the same but my trolley has elasticated straps similar-ish to bungee straps, they work fine with the one caveat that the bag can 'rotate' a bit, it's always firmly attached just not locked right into place if that makes sense?

Round today was absolutely awful... Started off wet and windy, improved to just really windy :p

My driving was pretty decent, I seem to have developed a bit of a draw, and occasionally a pull with it, very different from the slice I had before and the ball still goes but I'm so not used to it left at all I'm getting caught out in areas I don't usually have to worry about.

My putting was very much the other end of the scale, utterly terrible.

Everything else was meh at best.

A round to forget tbh but nice to get out in the fresh air at least.

That’s exactly what happens with my velcro straps.

My round this morning was just windy, very windy. A good two club breeze at times. Iron striking was generally good which was pleasing and the two par 3's on the front nine on which I nearly always find the water were negotiated in par.

Unfortunately I duffed a few at just the wrong time which led to me finding the water :p On the plus side a downwind drive on 12 which I hit it right out of screws gave me a new PB of around 265 yards. A stark contrast to some of the others which just ballooned up in the wind and went nowhere.

Suffered a terrible loss on Saturday.

Decided to ride my bike to the range. Not a long journey at 30ish mins but have to go through a lot of tow paths to get there. Had the bag on my back of course. On the way back I tried to thread a narrow gap at silly speeds and crack, nearly pulled off the back of the bike and saw something fly past my right ear. Driver head snapped completely off about 2/3 up the shaft...

Had that driver head far about 2 weeks having cracked the crown on the previous one...

Is the head itself damaged? May be able to get a replacement shaft at least, bit cheaper than a new driver :p

Aye thankfully it escaped relatively unscathed aside from a feint scratch. TBH I'd rather just save up for a decent fitted option now. Got my iron fitting late September and tempted to just get a Driver sorted whilst I'm there. In for a penny and all that...

He's back!!!

A few months of hitting my driver terrible and switching to my 5i off the tee, has not been an exciting or a fun way to play golf for me!
Yesterday, played at the Vale Resort with a friend of mine, finally got back to playing decent golf!

Hit my driver well, averaging about 250 off the tee total. 1 lost ball, on a very narrow hole and it only missed the green by about 10ft and it was gone, but I don't care too much about that, 7 on a par5 isn't too bad.
All in all, had a round to be super happy with, Played bogey golf mentally and didn't worry about getting the ball all the way to the tee on any of the long and narrow holes, so played conservative and loved it!
My putting and chipping was terrible in retro, so left loads out there, but it all felt so simple for once. Would love more days like this!

No doubles on the back 9 and only bogeys and pars throughout the day, including 1 birdie.
I'm always happy with my game once a birdie pops up on the card! :p

Had a very serious conversation with my teacher last night over the phone. For about 6 months now I've had in the back of my mind that the only real career goal I've ever had is to eventually get my PGA qualifications and teach. Whilst I only play off around 18 on a good day, I have an obsession with swing theory that at times overwhelms even my desire to play and my teacher thinks that with that drive and understanding already in place and enough practice I could probably drop my HC to 10 come the end of next year.

We spent around 45 mins talking the logistics and timeframes for 'reasonable' goals within a 4 year time span. This not only includes reasonable expectations of improvement over that time, but also how much I'd need to put aside financially for lessons, club fees and eventually the fees for the qualifications themselves.

The most important thing in the medium to long term is to drop my HC to the required index of 6.4 or lower. He's going to work on a tuition plan that will run until next September to give me the best shot at breaking 80 at least once come the end of next year. I have a meeting with him and a short game coach next Friday to determine whether that's really an area that needs addressing at the moment or whether it can wait. I was initially quite confident that it could wait, but as it's where amateurs generally drop the most shots my teacher wants to be sure that my technique is good enough going forward before we address some of my more personal concerns ie. long irons.

It's going to be a long and difficult journey but I'm very much excited to see where I can take it. Will post regular updates in here with regards my game and general milestones. Wish me luck!

@ArcticHeron that's a nice goal to set, how did it come about? Were you always interested in teaching golf/swing technique or is it something that came about after playing for a while?

My dad basically forced me into lessons when I was a kid. I got semi decent over a 3 year period but always hated it and gave it up at around 15. Always loved the sport though and whilst I didn't pick up a club again until early last year I always made a point of watching the big events and learning about the history of the game.

I've always wanted to teach in some capacity. I've been with the same teacher now since last March (though have been to several others but always return to him) and it's been quite telling that we spend 3/4s of the lesson talking about swing technique and favorite shots we've seen then we do actually practicing. A few months ago I flat out asked him to tell me what he thought of my game. He said my knowledge and eye for poor technique in the swing was fantastic, but that I had terrible 'feel' and application in my own game
He followed that by saying I have the right temperament, mindset and knowledge at my level to be a great teacher if I worked at it. I was quite flattered actually. He's an old school bulldog of a teacher. Very short tempered, idolizes Hogan and doesn't take kindly to modern teaching techniques.

I'd sort of been stewing on it since then really.
