Back from holiday...

Catching up on some golf videos....

Have Ping lost their minds -

eh?? Ping G430 LST 3 wood - £500

What is gods name are they thinking?? The G425 LST 3 wood is £239

Finally got the monkey off my back and broke 90 last night after coming agonisingly close over the past couple of months. Wouldn't even say it was the best I've played but definitely the smartest - mainly because my driver never got a look-in once! :D

Came to the 17th on 80 so it was looking good for me to then make an arse of it and come off with a 6, which made breaking 90 really unlikely. Great first tee shot and wedge shot on 18th left me about 25 foot away from the hole with a really snakey bugger of a line with a big dent on the green to contend with to get the birdie. Didn't think it was going to happen but at least if I got it close I'd still be happy with 90. Hit the putt which started getting closer and closer, it then fell in for 89! Easily the best putt I've ever made and not just because it helped me beat my goal.

Still could have scored better if I got my pace right on a lot of my other putts which sometimes finished a foot or less away from the hole but it's something to work on.

Next targets - keep it under 90 consistently and work on my driving.
Congrats!! Onwards and upwards from there now you have that monkey off your back! Welcome to the <90 squad :p

I played this morning on a course, that some of my golf society friends have already played, so me and a few friends went there to try it out before the official game in 2-3 weeks time.
Lost 2 balls, but still managed to shoot 83.
Made 2 birdies,
- 1st one was an approach from 124 yards away, over a short tree, to land a foot from the pin.
- 2nd one was me thinning my chip from a tight lie (worn grass, where people walk and take their trolleys) - and it rolled at pace, hit the pin and dropped in :p

2 birdies, 5 pars, 5 doubles and the rest were bogies. Not bad considering I lost 2 balls off the tee (cost me 4 shots in total) and didn't know the course.

Game of 2 halves this morning.

Jetlagged, horrible sleep last night, and was 8 over on the way out with a double bogie on 8 & and quad on 9... (lost balls on both holes)

Then played very solid on the way back +3.

Shot gross 82 with 6 dropped shots in 2 holes (8 & 9)

Putting was excellent - 26 putts kept things ticking over - Took some of the above video tips to focus more on the hole/target than my setup (as that should be fairly routine now) - seemed to work well.

Local Open competition tomorrow - done well in the last few years in it but weather looking rough tomorrow.

Out again yesterday, started reasonably well although my tee shot off the first hooked into the trees down the left side of the fairway. Made 2 pars on the front 9 but then inconsistent shots took over my game. Chip shots around the greens were my saviour because 40 putts and a total of 116 drained any confidence I had before starting the round. I am hitting the ball a lot straighter than a few round back, but I can’t get thin and fat shots out of my game nor gain any real distance from my irons. Such a frustrating game when you know that simple errors cost a lot.

Tough day at our local Open

Very windy out there... playing 2 maybe even 3 clubs more at times. Rough start.

Poor front 9, besides a nice 2 on the par 3 3rd.

Better back nine and won a voucher (£25) for nearest the pin in 2 at the tough 16th hole (7ft 10")

82 gross less 7 for 75. 27 putts was nice. rolling it well.

Winning net was 69 and best gross was 75!! That shows how tough it was out there today.

I’d be happy with less than 90, stunning card. Interested to know what what you see as a good score?

Playing off 6.4 I'm generally "happy" with anything in the 70's.... Today wasn't a "low scoring" day due to the wind so it was fine/average day today.

I need to be more consistently in the 70's but my handicap has come down a lot in the last 12/18 months and I feel that I very much lacking any practice time to be playing to the 6.4 handicap I have currently. Still feel like I'm a 8/9 due to lack of practice time if that makes sense.

I can see from your putts, your short game is pretty strong, getting up and down frequently

yes - I've improved putting by nearly 2 full shots a round over 2022.

I feel much more confident around the greens getting up and down - but the stats don't show much improvement in terms of raw numbers from 2022 to 2023.

Based on my shotscope data.

Changed my putting routine a little bit based on the video above that I posted - Trying to spend more time looking at the target and "feeling" the putt, rather than staring at the ball/setup etc..... Last 2 rounds have been excellent putting.

I'm struggling a lot with that at the moment. Angle the putt to accommodate for the break, guess at the pace then just nail it. Bad habit I thought I'd broken.

watch the video I linked - The guy in it does the same thing as you.... Spends too much time thinking about the break/setup etc.

You'll see it in the video but he talks about making a free throw in basketball... What do you look at? You hands, the ball, your feet position etc??? No, you look at the basket/target for 90% of the shot... That's the "target".

By looking at the target, you can "See/feel" the pace you need to hit a putt - you still need to start it on the correct line, but it's much more about feel, than technical setup etc.

Thought I'd post an update to the golf simulator build that I started a couple of weeks ago:

  • Took a load of stuff to the dump to empty enough junk out
  • Put up some deep shelving across the entire right side wall
  • Cleared everything from the back wall
  • Built a frame for the size screen I wanted (3.3m x 2.5m)
  • Bought golf impact screen
  • Bought projector
  • Revived my old 'streaming' pc that I used for a dual setup twitch streaming box.
  • Already had launch monitor and mat
  • Bought GSPro
  • Added thick blackout curtains to the surrounds for cinema effect and ball catching
  • Added curtains to the main door into the garage
  • Added small 'catch' net to ceiling to stop lob wedge going too high
  • Added an old TV Receiver/AMP to power 2x70w speakers for some decent sound.
  • Small spot-light above my swinging area
  • Can also be used as a little youtube/kids area for when the kids want a sit-down after playing in the garden
  • My 4 year old can now hit his 9i 41yards :p

Had a lesson again today to see where I’m going wrong..

I’m not going straight back and then pulling down towards the left. When I done this , I really was crunching those range balls!

I must say the instructor is a top guy. It was expensive, and I didn’t go to my local pro as I have had a lesson before him and the teaching is night and day difference!

Need to practice in the net now and get up to the damn golf course!!

Been playing quite steadily in recent weeks, a few more sub-80 rounds either side of my holiday break and the WHS index came down to 7.1.

I suspect it may creep up a tad though as I've got a few of my early season scores about to drop off.

Looking at my shotscope data the strokes are being gained mainly with my approach play and off the tee. Putting is average and there is a shortfall in strokes gained in the short game, so I'll maybe try to get some focused practice in after the schools go back.

In other news, gear-wise I have found a unicorn club in the 200yard spot, the Cleveland Halo XL Hy-wood at 18 degrees. Had it in the bag for the last couple of months and it's genuinely one of the best clubs I've ever bought. The ping g430 2 hybrid that I had previously has been punted! It's got a powerful neutral flight and a nice crunchy sound on impact (i.e. not tinny, hard to explain). Just flat out performs in any lie, and it's surprising as it screams game improvement club with quite a light counterbalanced stock shaft. Highly recommended!

yeah - my 7 wood has been a game changer for me this year ... 210-220 club, high ball flight, soft landing. I can choke it down a bit and get it down around 200/205 if needed but slightly harder to control.

Still looking for something to fill the 7 wood to 5 iron gap (around 195-205 club)

Maybe an adjustable #4 hybrid lofted up a notch e.g. one of the more workable/players type hybrids rather than a game improvement rocket launcher?

Looking at getting some waterproof trousers , don’t want to spend over £50 if possible because I’m looking to get some waterproof shoes too. Anyone have any suggestions? I went to the local American Golf store, but they didn’t have a lot of choices and the cheapest were £60

How are you finding the height? I have plans to build a sim next year in the garage and currently plan to submit planning for changes including raising the roof height to 3m internal but do wonder if it’s really needed. Current space is 8m x 4m with 2.6m ceiling height.

Very early stages of planning but got the wide onboard with it so I do have a chance to pull it off. Like yours it’s sold as a multi function space for kids with Xbox etc.

The height is *mostly* fine, I do have a the odd time where I hit the beams and take a little chunk out of the wood, but nothing major - clubs are never damaged too.
I'm also going to adjust the beams in the garage, so they are a few feet higher up, so taller friends of mine don't hit it every time. I'm 6ft and have no issues, but one of my friends is 6'2 and has a steep swing and hits it regularly.
I also don't want to end up with a pretty flat swing, just because I practice in there a lot, so raising the beams would be the easiest thing.
My garage is separate from the house, so may be easier for me than some.

Although, I think my next job is to put some boards and simple sound-proofing over the garage doors, to block the sounds from speakers when I'm watching movies, it's pretty loud outside :p
