Golf Thread

A lot of the big favorites underperforming a touch today considering the conditions have been decent. A lot of magic happening on the back though with some big names still on the front. Really hope Tommy can keep this up. No real mistakes today outside of the 5th and made some amazing saves.

Superb improvement there mate when compared to your other rounds! What was the fix you employed for Driver?

Thank you!
I've been fighting with a hook on my driver for the last 3-4 months and I was over-closing my clubface at impact.
I never wanted to put in some non-pure fixes, because I want to keep my swing as neutral as possible. I didn't want my swing or setup to look stupid.
I've gone against that now though. I open my clubface up about 2-3 degrees more at setup for driver and swing normally. I can repeat the same swing over and over now and have so much confidence in where it's heading! Absolutely love golf again

I've also introduced a full routine for all of my shots (drives, approach and putting), so I'm always aligned properly. I think it doubley helps with fixing my hooks too, as I feel like I started aiming more and more right of target, to allow for the hook and just made it worse over time.

I now need to practice my putting, that's what let me down the most today, on the back 9 especially.

I think that comment is such a common problem for all of us. We all want Ernie Els swing and will put so much time into getting it, but the reality is that a simple fix like club face adjustment at address or bowing the wrists slightly can validate your current swing just as well in the short to medium term. I remember in one of Hank Haneys books he talks about the 'maintenance' method of teaching. This is where the instructor essentially believes that the way you swing a club from day dot is basically how you'll swing it forever and that making minor adjustments to that pattern is the most beneficial. It takes almost 2 years for most pros to 'rebuild' a swing from the ground up. As amateurs that's a ridiculous ask. Small changes and solid practice will always make the biggest difference.

Usual friday golf today, decent round overall, one of the guys who is even newer to the sport than me beat me which was kinda annoying but I didn't have a terrible round so meh.

Seemed like I made a bunch of 'minor' mistakes that then left me with the ball way below my feet or an awkward shot or just having to take my medicine, nothing 'too' bad but also very annoying :p

Highlight was a birdie on the par 5 16th, nothing spectacular but just solid. Decent drive, pushed my hybrid a bit and ended up pin-high but off the green (so really should've been on in 2!), chipped on to about 7-8ft and then a decent putt for birdie. Simple. Like all golf, it's such a simple game...

Got one of those jumbo fat grips that Bryson uses, hopefully I'll be able to hold/swing a club with these.

Will find out tomorrow, only done my 8i as they are £23 a pop!

deffo let us know how you get on, i have always toyed with the idea of thicker grips on my clubs.

Glad to read others playing well :) Wish I could say the same but I seem to have stalled of late.

Had a lesson this morning but unlike normal where I've felt/seen improvement I left this one flat. Instructor was getting me to work on shifting my weight correctly on to my left foot, at present I transfer it onto the toe and so struggle to clear my hips out of the way on the downswing. This is going to be a hard one to bed in, feels like two steps backward at the moment.

Played a round afterwards and didn't lose one off the tee with the driver which was nice. Also got called through by a three ball in front on a long par 5 after they'd teed off and had been looking for their balls. Flushed a driver and three wood to make it past the dog leg :) Then flushed a wedge but unfortunately pulled it a touch to end pin high a few yards off the green. Three putted for a 6 to equal my best score on that hole.

Played Withington GC, Manchester, on Wednesday. Too many 3 putts and inconsistent irons left me with a 113 score. Really struggling to hit the ball any distance

Well. After the weather FINALLY breaking, was a lovely day today..I went out and setup my net for the first time in around, 3-4 weeks :(

I couldnt believe how well I was hitting the irons, it was disgusting tbh, but im happy. The main gripe I have with my setup, is, OK, for irons its perfect, but i cannot practice my hybrid/3 wood/ driver..Im too afraid of a sky right into the houses behind me!

So, I have decided, now my back is recovering, im hoping to start next week at my local course (have driven by it and it does look lush for a small community course, I must say..), once its quiet and im out after a few holes hitting the irons, to bring the big dog out! :D

I have a million Slazenger V300 (soft ) brand new, to play with and "lose"! I thought well, if I lose them no biggie, and at least its also a new ball, rather than an old beaten up one! (even though there is nothing wrong with that). Each to his own tbf.

One more thing to note - im still having some connection issues with my Rapsodo and Awesome Golf, AG is fine, it is deffo the hardware in the monitor, so again, hopefully addressed soon.

Played a member & guest competition at my friends course this morning.
Surprised how well the course held up after the amount of rain we had yesterday. Lovely course, off the whites, quality comp.

Shot an 88, but the game fell apart on the 14th after an out-of-nowhere I shanked my 9i into the trees and got a lucky bounce back into the rough. Ended up with my first score above bogey all day and something just didn't feel quite right from there onwards, followed by my first chunk, slice and slip. 6 over through 13 up until then, it was one of those games that could have been, but just wasn't! Still feeling the game is very strong right now though!

I feel like after almost 2 years of playing, I'm on the cusp of reaching my goal of around a 14-15 hcap if I carry on like I am.

How'd you find it mate? Had one fitted on my 5 iron and found that it helped preventing me getting too 'wristy' in my backswing, allowing me to set them a more comfortably. I also default to a bit of a 'cricketers' grip with long irons, setting the grip more in my palms instead of my fingers. The bigger grip definitely helped that feel more natural.

Don't think I could have them on anything shorter then a 6 though. It's the same reason I can't hack any of the super stroke grips on my putters. I just loose all feel and touch past a certain point.

Better than my current grip but not enough to sway me into changing. I'll stick with my MCC +4.

Sadly thr pain was still there when hitting the ball so I'll need to seek external solutions to that.

Damn, where's the pain located?
Ostio Arthritus in my middle fingers, on both hands, so gripping and impact is affected.

So every time I strike the ball I get an intense shock wave up my fingers which is excruciating, even worse when I shank it, and that happens often at the moment.

Man that sucks. Hate to do that thing that people do, but my uncles a keen golfer who was OA in his hands. He plays as often as he can, maybe once a fortnight so long as he's not having a flare up. He swears by his Wilson Launch Pad irons he brought a few years back, all with whippy graphite shafts and to my eye he seems to strike the ball as well as he's ever done, despite having to loose a bit of club head speed. Might be worth going down that route if you haven't looked into something like that as an option?

Finally got the monkey off my back and broke 90 last night after coming agonisingly close over the past couple of months. Wouldn't even say it was the best I've played but definitely the smartest - mainly because my driver never got a look-in once! :D

Came to the 17th on 80 so it was looking good for me to then make an arse of it and come off with a 6, which made breaking 90 really unlikely. Great first tee shot and wedge shot on 18th left me about 25 foot away from the hole with a really snakey bugger of a line with a big dent on the green to contend with to get the birdie. Didn't think it was going to happen but at least if I got it close I'd still be happy with 90. Hit the putt which started getting closer and closer, it then fell in for 89! Easily the best putt I've ever made and not just because it helped me beat my goal.

Still could have scored better if I got my pace right on a lot of my other putts which sometimes finished a foot or less away from the hole but it's something to work on.

Next targets - keep it under 90 consistently and work on my driving.
