Don’t think all range mats are the same. If I goto some of the local ranges, their mats are just thin covers with a pad underneath which does give a hero impression and minimizes fat shots.

Yet the thicker and deeper ones I’ve come across at nicer places very much punish you for fat shots. The club just doesn’t travel through and finish the swing like the cheaper mats.

What the **** is "releasing" the club? I hear it a lot in youtube vids. "At release, make sure you...." What does that actually mean? What is releasing the club?

I think it’s where you feel like you’re letting the club go when your arms pass your body in the downswing.

That's why I think majority of golf YouTubers aren't any help unless you know what they're talking about.

Watch the video below and I'll try to explain what I think is the release.

Skip to around 1:50 when Tommy is starting his back swing. Watch his gloveless hand at around 2:09 when his wrist starts to straighten up - that's the release just as he's about to hit the ball.

I haven't watched the video, but I feel the release is:

When your club is on the downswing and the club is parallel to the ground behind you.
You rotate your forearms.
The club will then be parallel to the ground in front of you.
As @Lonewolf mentioned, the clubhead will take-over your hands.

Got my iron fitting on Friday evening. Had originally planned to go to Scottsdale but my teacher has arranged a free fitting for me more locally. Trying not to look up specific models, but the new T200s look bloody lovely, though I'm probably not quite good enough yet for a set of forged irons with so little offset.

Had a mess around in the pro shop studio last week and tried a few out for half hour or so. Really got on the with the Cobra Radspeeds, Mizuno JPX 923's and an older set of P790s but sadly no Trackman around to monitor anything. My budget is also fairly limited at £700 so it'll likely be older models I'm forced to look at. Very excited though. Never had any new clubs and really feels like I've earned the right to splurge a little over this past year considering the gains I've made.

I'm quite happy with my Wilson Dynapowers, and they're cheap :p, but they're definitely at the game improvement end of the scale so probably not the best for you, maybe worth trying though? If you do note the lofts are crazy 'strong' (e.g. less loft for a given club, hence more distance) so worth taking that into account when looking at distances.

Also I tried, and did like, the Srixon ZX-4 Mk II's. Looks wise they're lovely, personally I felt they were better than the Mizuno JPX 923's, really it was price for me that made the choice between them and the Wilsons... Being honest I occasionally wonder if I made the right choice as they were so pretty :p

Aha I've no brand loyalty to speak of so I'd be happy taking anything home providing I see a marked improvement in certain areas. My issue is and most likely always will be a lack of distance (7 iron tops out at about 165), not accuracy so anything that can aide with that will be what I pick up.

Having said that I need a set that's going to gap fairly consistently, so something not too far off improvement irons are most likely where I'll end up.

I've had the Radspeeds for nearly two years now and love them. I was on the fence about getting fitted for a new set but there's absolutely nothing wrong with them.

I do potentially need to get a gap wedge and possibly a 4 iron but I'm not sure if I can order individual clubs that are a couple of years old.

Have you tried swinging the club faster?

I play with Wilson Di9’s and can’t get anywhere near 165 at the moment using a 7i, not even with a 5i.

I’ve bought all of my clubs second hand off EBay. Irons first, then woods as separates, wedge and the putter. All of my purchases were in great condition, and a fraction of the cost new clubs would have been.
As for the 4 iron, what about a 7 or 5 wood instead?
Quite fancy a 5 wood myself, just not sure which to go for.

I can't get 165 from a 7 either, I'd say a *good* 7i for me was ~145-150 total, when I did a gapping in a simulator it was 132 yards average carry. My 5i can just about get there though, that was 153 yards carry iirc and can just about roll out, but again that's a good'un...

I love my Mavrik 5 Wood, mine is the 2022 re-release but I'd imagine either could be picked up fairly cheap on the bay? Given the above distances I can carry mine ~170-180 and roll out currently to 190-200. My absolute best when the ground was parched a couple of months ago was 229 yards total.

Assuming you're talking carry you're well ahead of me too. Best I've seen on the range is 150 and my 7i is 28.5° so very strong loft. More typical for me on a good strike is around 140-145. In respect of gapping I'm sure your fitter will be able to bend your clubs a degree or two either way once you've got them and are dialled in to achieve what you want.

I was back out on course this afternoon to try and put into practice the teachings from yesterday's lesson with predictably mixed results. Largely left the driver in the bag and used my 3w of the majority of the tees. Around the middle of the round did crunch some beautiful 6i's which gave me hope I can crack this latest road block. Suspect I tried to hit a little too hard after that. Forecast tomorrow is rain so may try and get in a range session and then back out on Friday.

Wednesday medal today and a personal best off the white tees with a +5 gross 76 and a nice -5 nett.

Again, solid stuff for most of the round off the tee and on the approaches. Lag putts were great today but could have easily been 3 more birdies on the card, as per previous weeks the big chances are not dropping currently.

Something to try and work on in Sept anyway, but great round today so very happy overall.

And even better my 20th score to drop off for the WHS index is a 77 so that'll mean the handicap doesn't come down too drastically!!

Oh I didn't mean to suggest 165 is my average carry with a 7, that's very much a well flushed number. Average is 154 according to top tracer and you could probably take 10 yards off that on the course.

I've never really got in with woods but I have been tempted to pick up a cheap 3/5 wood to play around with and get used to them. I had another lesson last night which has managed to squeeze another 15-20 yards out of my irons so might need to look at my gapping first before jumping the gun. That was off a mat so need to see what it's like on the course now - might not even need to add anything between driver and 3-hybrid as I'm a long hitter anyway. A gap wedge is an absolute must now after finishing up at the range last night.

Just need to get more consistent with the new changes. 7 iron seems to have jumped up to 185+ yards but my 8 sits about 160ish now so again, gapping needs to be sorted out.

Just got off the phone with my teacher. Wants to do an on course lesson with me soon to see where we are at the moment. Really wants to get me on a busy course to see how well I do under pressure which is... something. Very lucky in that all my local courses are quieter then most, even on busy Saturdays we can usually get on after 15:00 with big gaps in front and behind. Been a bit of a detriment to my game of late, as soon as there's any pressure it's a coin toss as to whether the hole will be a write off.
Keeps pushing me to get fitted for a decent 3 wood as well. He doesn't want me getting too comfortable with bogey golf and apparently my par 5 mentality is "decidedly lousy and typical of a lazy player" God love him.

I've been thinking about doing an on-course lesson as well, feels like it'd be a good/interesting thing to do and the pro at my local (who I don't use for 1-to-1 lessons but have gone to some group lessons) does them on a Wednesday...

Also yeah with pressure... One of my worse rounds last week was when the course was rammed so lots of waiting, usually had the group behind on the tee box etc, just didn't handle it well and exacerbated the mistakes... Not sure what the fix for that is though? Maybe just doing it more often?
