Golf Thread

Out today for the usual except slightly different as we decided to play off the front/red/'ladies' tees for the lols... Definitely made a difference but none of us were playing particularly well to really take advantage of it.

My main issue was the driver not playing ball, topped the first two which is irritating and then when I started contacting it better I was leaving the face open and slicing it, kept trying to get that timing right to close it but never managed it. Hit some decent ones, best was 227 yard as a very definite slice, considering you (usually?) lose distance for a slice that's really good for me, well, not really but you know :p

Should've given up and used my trusty 5W...

In other news yesterday was 12 months exactly after my first ever round of golf, so today I got bored and counted (with Garmin :p) how many rounds I've played:
  • 84 full 18-hole rounds
  • 29 9-hole rounds (on 'full' courses, not par 3's)
  • 3 par-3 9-hole rounds

That's a fair bit of golf :p
What is your goal, to hit long or hit straight? Shortening your swing might improve your accuracy and keep you happy.

Both? :D

Probably something I should think about next time I play tbh, I do have a tendency to fall into going too far back by 'getting narrow' (eg hands/grip get close to my shoulders with the club shaft basically across my back), it's something I do try to avoid but quite possible I'm falling back into that habit.

Your committment to the cause is admirable :p The next step on the ladder (break 90) can't be far away.

Counting a year to the date, I've played 149 rounds that I've kept track of.
This doesn't count rounds that are team games, where my scores are not worth tracking on the app.
It also doesn't count rounds that I just did a few practice rounds-only where I drop a few balls on each hole etc.. :p

that's like a round of golf every day and a half!! Jesus wept - do you work??

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been swapping equipment with my friend who has a fitted Ping G430 irons, hybrid and driver set. Stiff shafts all around.

Mine is a Mavrik set with regular shafts except the driver which is a shorter shaft by 1.5inches but stiff. It was a quick swap of the shaft at the local shop due to stock limitations but it’s for the better as the regular shafts dispersion was all over the place.

First thing I noticed and it was immediate is the absurd level of forgiveness the ping driver has. Out of maybe 20 swings, I made one bad swing where I tried to go full send. Everything else is straight, far and with a lot more feel to where the club head is during the swing. It honestly feels like a cheat code.

The irons are quite different as well but I think it’s more to do with the shaft stiffness. Mine tend to balloon right at impact whereas the same swing with his stiff shaft, it’s a more penetrating flight and the height ramps up vs starting high right away.

We’re both about 14 months into golf and at 28 handicap but are strict about score counting fwiw.

well, been out on the net there for about an hour and twenty..and beginning to questions my MLM2 accuracy. (again!).

I have been checking more of the metrics, especially spin, and it clicked on me.. perhaps the readings for carry distance is correct and its me? Using a higher spin ball?

So im in the process as we speak of "dotting" up my cheap Slazenger V300 balls, to see if the two-piece crappy ball will mimic the results im seeing on the range?

I mean, so many people are getting great accuracy and data from this unit, so it HAS to be me.

Played with a society today at Cumberwell Park, 3rd time there but they've got several 9-hole courses and the front 9 today was the Red course that I hadn't played before, back 9 was Orange which I played last time.

Went reasonably well, I've not got any trust in my driver right now and not had time to practice so left that in the bag and used my 5w, which worked, Garmin put me at 62% fairways hit.

Probably some of my biggest issues today was where I try to push a poor situations, sometimes I sensibly took my medicine and hit back into the fairways but a couple of times I tried to make decent progress and just got into more trouble.

I swear 50% of golfers must be blind! Greens maintenance took place on the Cathedral course at the start of the week so greens are soft and full of sand. Pitch marks very obvious and easy to repair yet I did around 10 on the 18th green never mind the rest of the round

Another different course played yesterday, Berrington Hall GC, St Helens. First four holes went well for me hitting one over on each hole, then a 9 on the next which was a par 5, a par on the 6th, my only one of the day. 7th & 8th were 90 degree doglegs, and they killed my game, shot 9 on them both. Ended with 110 for the round. Going to give the same course another bash next weekend, hopefully.

Same on nearly every course I play at especially if it's late in the day and lots of guest players have been out. I always try to repair mine plus at least one other on every green.

Well, that's the two weeks off over and done with. Actually didn't play quite as much as I'd have liked to, maybe 5 or 6 rounds. Couldn't play the Belfry in the end due to family commitments, but played relatively well throughout. Shot 88 on the 4th or 5th round last week which was really nice. Putting is on point at the moment but my approach game slipped a few times. Got the shanks on one occasion and came very close to not holing out. Getting to the stage generally though where it's not just a comedy of errors now and I can visualize after the round exactly which shots I left hanging. Tis a good feeling.

Woofft.

Played at Rowallan Castle yesterday in their Open. £15 so great value.
Montgomerie designed - https://rowallancastle.com/rowallan-championship-golf-course-ayrshire/

Lovely course, HUGE greens, very complex....Very very tough course. Long (6850 yards off whites) - almost no run on the fairways at all, pins tuck away in tough spots and was pretty windy too boot and felt like all but 2 holes were into wind etc. Bunkers off the tee were in perfect spots all the time. Had to really think about your tee shots etc.

Par 5 16th - 590 yards into wind. I hit Driver, 3 wood, 5 iron and still had 80 yard pitch to the green!!

Scoring was off the charts.... Looks like 78 scratch will win the scratch prize!! My mate shot 80-8 for 72 and will probably win 1st class (£200).

Lovely course but one of the hardest "tests" of golf I've ever played - I N/R'd on 13th.

^ that looks cracking I'll add that one to the bucket list.

Amazing stuff from Hovland last night it was such a good final round with Fitzpatrick and Scheffler going toe-to-toe and then Hovland just completely steamrollered past them.

Great to see the camaraderie from the European guys at the end as well

:p I do, but I'm also a golf addict.

I'm an early riser, so I tend to get up at 6 and on the golf course by 6.30am. Quick 9/18 depending on the weather and back to my desk for 9.30, It's getting quicker and quicker to play nowadays when there's nobody around at that time, the more you hit your ball down the middle, the quicker the game is too

I'll play 2 rounds on the weekend, then once or twice in the week, so not loads but certainly do-able if you're up early like me!
The other days I take the kids to school in the morning and might hit a couple of balls in the garage and work on some swing changes.

I keep meaning to do pre-work rounds, the 9 hole course near me is perfect for it, they open at 7 and it can take <1.5 hours for the 9 hole round, but even though I'm up around 6 most days I have no interest in doing anything then :p

Make sure it's summer time as I believe that it can get very very wet with a little rain on it. Course was playing long even yesterday, zero run on the fairways. Felt like 8000 yards with the wind. Very nice course, HUGE greens, and tough pins.

Got in a couple of rounds at the weekend - 2 iron is quickly becoming the weapon of choice off the tee (and off the deck on long par 5s..). Personal best of 84 on Sunday, managed to get on the green in 2 on a tricky double dogleg par 5. Couple of birdies, 5 pars, 2 birdies, only 1 triple bogey :p Definitely feeling like I'm getting there with consistency.

Edit: also enjoying slapping @Maccy around the course on a regular basis :D

Anyone else started using Arccos, with the sensors?
Really enjoying it now that it connects to my watch, compared to on my phone when I tried it last year.

Gives me strokes gained and lost in certain areas of my game. I've only used it for 2-3 rounds so far, but looking forward to gathering some stats over the coming months to see where the biggest issues lay.
If anyone fancies trying them, as I'm on a free-trial too: https://refer.arccosgolf.com/

DM me your email address and we can both gain from additional freebies :p

Not sure where to go from here. It occured to me today that my game is so bad that I was embarrassing my playing partners around the course and holding them/everyone up. I played a full 18, and I think I hit maybe 3 iron shots where the ball actually gained height and went straight. The rest were chunks, thins and shanks. I was trying so hard to hit an iron and just couldn't.
It's the same old story with me. Go down a range and I hit like a pro off the artificial mats. Ask me to hit an iron off grass and I can't. I would literally define it s CANT right now. You can't call any iron shot I hit of grass an actual shot. I'm broken.
Thoughts?
