After a year of waiting I finally had my iron fitting on Friday.
Won't bore everyone with all the meticulous details but after about an hour of going through a tons of makes and models it came down to the P790s, Wilson D9s, Wilson Dynapowers, Ping G425s and a second hand set of Stealths they'd got in that very day, all with variations of the DG S300 stiff shafts.
Was a really tough choice. The numbers on all of the above where fantastic. The flights of P790s where lovely, really penetrating and the carry was excellent, probably the best of the lot. I was averaging 176 with the 7 iron but I'd say 4 of every 10 where duds and I found there to be little forgiveness when I was hitting them even a touch heavy or out the toe. I loved the G425s for looks but the carry was average and I just couldn't catch the long irons clean at all. The Stealths where great and probably the most consistent of the lot in terms of strike pattern but the distances where a touch sporadic and I couldn't feel the club head at all in the take away.
It came down to the D9s and the Dynapowers. The D9s where fantastic and they where easily the best looking imo, but the carry was just ridiculous. I managed to get an average of 181 with the 7iron and the rollout was silly even with with relatively low spin. So it ended up being the Dynapowers. They probably weren't the clubs I 'fancied' the most, but I couldn't really argue with the numbers. The gapping was just too perfect and the carry was about where I wanted it to be, not quite as extreme as the D9s but consistent enough for me to trust. The only really issue is that the lofts are incredibly strong and the bottom end of the bag is going to have to expand a little. The PW is 42 degrees which is ridiculous so going to need to grab at least a 48 and a 52 to fill the gaps before my 56.
Really pleased overall though, It's going to be such a relief to have clubs I KNOW I can trust. No more blaming old second hand clubs for poor strikes. Was also a nice surprise that it ended up being the 'budget' clubs that fit best, saved almost half of what I'd set aside.
Pick them up mid month once the jumbo grips, shafts and lie angles have been sorted
Good choice
Defintely something to look at with the bottom of the bag, I've had the same issue with my Dynapowers (with a 52 in the bag), just got back from a 'fitting'/testing session for that actually
Thanks to everyone who responded with what wedges they use, quite useful. Went in today trying to get an idea on what kind of lofts might work and also trying some different clubs...
In a previous gapping session I'd hit my Dynapower PW 103 yards carry average and my Lazrus 52-degree 72 yards average, so really I'd want that next wedge to be more like 85 yards average. So hit some with a 50-degree and some with a 48-degree, both happened to be Vokey SM9's but as expected/as we found out later the different clubs made little to no difference in terms of distance (e.g. 54 degree SM9 vs MG4), and the 48-degree seemed to be the sweet spot around 80-85 yards carry. Going from there it feels like a 54 degree 'sand' wedge and a 58/60 degree lob wedge would fit, I rarely ever do a full shot with my current 60-degree but have started adding in full 56-degree shots.
So then to compare clubs got a few in a 54 degree setup which was the Vokey SM9, TaylorMade Hi-Toe, TM MG4 and Mizuno S-23. I did want to try the Mizuno T-22 but they didn't have a demo one, ended up trying it with tape on but that didn't work at all...
I felt the SM9's almost felt 'harder' than the others, felt the impact more, which I felt was a bad thing at the time but typing this out maybe it's better to get a feel for how it was hit perhaps?
MG4 felt great tbh, felt great and the first set of shots I did with it were really consistent, all a touch left of the centre-line, 60-61 yards carry, spin within 400rpm deviation, really nice.
The Hi-Toe looked a bit odd really, I get it but yeah, full-face grooves just look weird
The Mizuno S-23 felt reasonably good but I really wanted to try the T-22, mostly just cause it looks good, did get to hit one with tape on but I'm guessing because of the tape it was riding up the race because all the hits were high and short, as in hitting the roof before screen in the simulator and barely making it 40 yards.
So if I want to go all new wedges looks like 48, 54 and 60. Probably the MG4, it's due in this week, but still tempted by the T-22, it's sooooo pretty...
Could easily spread that out as well cause I think I could happily live now with a 48 replaceing my old Spalding PW+52 degree and leaving the 54/60 degree ones till 'later'
Decisions, decisions.
