I find it really hard to put time into practice, I know how valuable it is but would much rather play :p

Semi-related but today I booked some time for simulator practice for next week, but also followed by a wedge fitting, not 100% sure I'll buy a set of 3/4 wedges right now but want to get a better idea of how to fill in the bottom of the bag.

Currently got my Dynapower PW (42 degrees, 103 carry average), Spalding PW (No idea on loft or carry, seems to kinda fit though, gonna check carry before the fitting) and the Lazrus set of 52 (72 yards), 56 (56 yards), 60 (39 yards).

Free option is to keep it as is, cheap option would be to just get the Dynapower GW (47 degrees), expensive option would be new wedges, but not sure how 3 wedges will 'work', perhaps like a 48, 54, 58 (/60) set might work, but seem a bit far apart?

What do everyone else have for wedges? I think really I'm just bored of not having got anything new and shiny for at least a month now :p

I have Wilson Di9’s so a PW, whatever loft it is, SW which is 55 degree, and a Cleveland CG16 60 degree wedge.

I have 2 Ping Glide wedges 50 and 58 and the PW 48 and SW 54 that come with the irons, Callaway Steelhead XRs

I would get a couple of wedges from Ebay try 'em and if you don't like 'em put them back on Ebay

After going to Scottsdale myself for a wedge fitting and seeing my game improve ten fold I'd 100% recommend getting fitted.

As for my wedges I've T100s PW 44deg. T100s GW 48deg. Vokey SM9 52, 56, 58.

It's mostly about trying to find out what lofts work/fit that I want to use the fitting for, it's kinda cheaper than buying randomly clubs on ebay as I'd want to check their numbers in the simulator anyway.

That's a lot of wedges :p Out of curiosity what does the top of the bag look like? Part of my thinking of maybe seeing if a set of 3 wedges (+ Dynapower PW, which barely counts) would be to free up a spot at the top of the bag, maybe for a 3 wood or even that shiny mini-driver :p

My full bag consists of:
  • Driver
  • 3 Wood
  • 4 Hybrid
  • 5 Iron - 9 Iron
  • Then my wedges
Gapping is perfect and each club is used.
Depending on distance etc as to what you need at the top of the bag.
My 4 Hybrid and 3 Wood are my favourite 2 clubs. Just so consistent.

DAMN! - Wedge central! - 56 and 58 not very close together?

I'm PW (45), GW (50) in my set (jpx 921 forged) then 54/58 in T22 Mizuno wedges.
they are and they're not. Because of the bounce Vokey do they act as completely different clubs and produce different flights of the ball.
Between the 58 and a 60 their was little in it but I had more confidence over a 58

After a year of waiting I finally had my iron fitting on Friday.

Won't bore everyone with all the meticulous details but after about an hour of going through a tons of makes and models it came down to the P790s, Wilson D9s, Wilson Dynapowers, Ping G425s and a second hand set of Stealths they'd got in that very day, all with variations of the DG S300 stiff shafts.

Was a really tough choice. The numbers on all of the above where fantastic. The flights of P790s where lovely, really penetrating and the carry was excellent, probably the best of the lot. I was averaging 176 with the 7 iron but I'd say 4 of every 10 where duds and I found there to be little forgiveness when I was hitting them even a touch heavy or out the toe. I loved the G425s for looks but the carry was average and I just couldn't catch the long irons clean at all. The Stealths where great and probably the most consistent of the lot in terms of strike pattern but the distances where a touch sporadic and I couldn't feel the club head at all in the take away.

It came down to the D9s and the Dynapowers. The D9s where fantastic and they where easily the best looking imo, but the carry was just ridiculous. I managed to get an average of 181 with the 7iron and the rollout was silly even with with relatively low spin. So it ended up being the Dynapowers. They probably weren't the clubs I 'fancied' the most, but I couldn't really argue with the numbers. The gapping was just too perfect and the carry was about where I wanted it to be, not quite as extreme as the D9s but consistent enough for me to trust. The only really issue is that the lofts are incredibly strong and the bottom end of the bag is going to have to expand a little. The PW is 42 degrees which is ridiculous so going to need to grab at least a 48 and a 52 to fill the gaps before my 56.

Really pleased overall though, It's going to be such a relief to have clubs I KNOW I can trust. No more blaming old second hand clubs for poor strikes. Was also a nice surprise that it ended up being the 'budget' clubs that fit best, saved almost half of what I'd set aside.

Pick them up mid month once the jumbo grips, shafts and lie angles have been sorted :)

My progression so far since keeping score.

The blow up holes and small errors that add strokes kill me the most still. I if reduce those breaking 90 should be normal. A miss on a full shot I expect as part of learning but it’s the small mental errors that I’m trying to eliminate.

Good choice :p

Defintely something to look at with the bottom of the bag, I've had the same issue with my Dynapowers (with a 52 in the bag), just got back from a 'fitting'/testing session for that actually :)

Thanks to everyone who responded with what wedges they use, quite useful. Went in today trying to get an idea on what kind of lofts might work and also trying some different clubs...

In a previous gapping session I'd hit my Dynapower PW 103 yards carry average and my Lazrus 52-degree 72 yards average, so really I'd want that next wedge to be more like 85 yards average. So hit some with a 50-degree and some with a 48-degree, both happened to be Vokey SM9's but as expected/as we found out later the different clubs made little to no difference in terms of distance (e.g. 54 degree SM9 vs MG4), and the 48-degree seemed to be the sweet spot around 80-85 yards carry. Going from there it feels like a 54 degree 'sand' wedge and a 58/60 degree lob wedge would fit, I rarely ever do a full shot with my current 60-degree but have started adding in full 56-degree shots.

So then to compare clubs got a few in a 54 degree setup which was the Vokey SM9, TaylorMade Hi-Toe, TM MG4 and Mizuno S-23. I did want to try the Mizuno T-22 but they didn't have a demo one, ended up trying it with tape on but that didn't work at all...

I felt the SM9's almost felt 'harder' than the others, felt the impact more, which I felt was a bad thing at the time but typing this out maybe it's better to get a feel for how it was hit perhaps?

MG4 felt great tbh, felt great and the first set of shots I did with it were really consistent, all a touch left of the centre-line, 60-61 yards carry, spin within 400rpm deviation, really nice.

The Hi-Toe looked a bit odd really, I get it but yeah, full-face grooves just look weird :p

The Mizuno S-23 felt reasonably good but I really wanted to try the T-22, mostly just cause it looks good, did get to hit one with tape on but I'm guessing because of the tape it was riding up the race because all the hits were high and short, as in hitting the roof before screen in the simulator and barely making it 40 yards.

So if I want to go all new wedges looks like 48, 54 and 60. Probably the MG4, it's due in this week, but still tempted by the T-22, it's sooooo pretty...

Could easily spread that out as well cause I think I could happily live now with a 48 replaceing my old Spalding PW+52 degree and leaving the 54/60 degree ones till 'later'

Decisions, decisions.

Get outside with wedges.... Hitting them in a simulator is pointless.... You need to know what they feel like on grass/chipping around the greens etc.

Nothing personal - but I've never understood wedges fittings being indoors.... The bounce on the club/bounce off the mat etc is useless indoors.

That's a fair point... I think the simulator works for sorting out the gapping/full shots, but that's only half the story. Obviously that place doesn't have any grass area, there are some options around for that though.
