Golf Thread

Looking forward to playing on Friday. Last couple of rounds have been with frozen greens and crispy fairways - completely different trying to play on that! Despite it only being a couple of rounds (that ended up as more of a mess about than actual scoring), it's amazing how it changes your game. Can't stop anything on the green, ball is going nowhere in the air etc.

Can't wait for some "normality" and soft ground :p

Out today at the networking meeting at Weston-Super-Mare, first time this year playing without frozen greens! Although they were pretty firm links greens still :p

Played ok-ish, better than last time. Driving and most of my iron shots were nice, although I regularly came up short with the irons, gonna blame the weather for that one

Pitching/chipping/putting were all pretty trash though so lots of shots left out there.

Good times though :)

My 2025 Golf Goals

Following what was meant to be a straight forward operation on my hip back in March 2024, a week later my femur snapped and I was laid up with no golf for 6 months.
I have manged to play a few times this year, mainly 9 holes but nothing like I was prior to the leg break.

I used to play about 2-3 times during the week after work in the summer, then Saturdays and at the end of 2022 I was down to a 2.3 Handicap and loving golf but now I am back to 7.8.

I am now scheduled to have a hip replacement and all metalwork removed from my leg on the 1st February!
My goal this year is to just get back out on the course and hit some balls and try and get back to normal.

Can't begin to tell you how much I have missed golf. Really looking forward to getting back out there!
Love it - hope all goes well.... Would be great to hear you playing more....

I do think that Rick has been well over taken in way of quality of game but in fairness to him he looks to have worked hard over the past year or 2 to improve his game. It can't be easy trying to get to such a high level and run the biggest golf channel on Youtube (not that that is a bad thing).

I wouldn't be surprised if he moves to the US, I would if I was him, its not going to hurt and the access to courses new to him and more importantly all year round is going to be a bonus. This last year has seen a big change in my opinion for golf on Youtube. Looking at the success of Bryson, Bryan Bro's and Grant has probably forced him into a rethink if he wants to continue to grow. I still enjoy his videos.
I'm not knocking him - but some of the stuff he comes out with at times is just silly.

Like @Superpatsy said - all this - "draw it off the left tree and find the right centre line of the fairway" - Just hit the ball Rick and try and keep it in play.....

The videos - like ALL youtubers do - "this is the driver EVER" "2025 best driver " etc etc - Then he puts his numbers up and they are all literally the same distance / spin from his videos 5 years ago....

All youtubers do it - i know it gets likes/views - but I much prefer when he does his own just playing videos / collaborations etc - Stay away from the equipment reviews stuff etc.

Have my fitting down at Ping tomorrow. Really looking forward to it, also really not looking forward to how much I might spend, my wife even more so :D
When I was playing more, I always chopped and changed between different brands but always found myself coming back to Pings. They are such good clubs right across the board.

Are you going to the fitting centre in Gainsborough?

Bob does sports videos are great fun, so refreshing when people don't take themselves too seriously, and some of the big time tour players they get on there doing silly challenges or chatting nonsense makes it all the better!

Rahm just smashing away tacos was a great watch!
It just seems so natural with them. Just 3 guys out playing golf and having a laugh - it almost doesn't feel like they are 'influencers'.

I'm fairly certain Rahm was holding back and could have easily sunk more tacos! Their new one with Schauffele was a really good watch as well.

Right then here's my review of the fitting - spoiler - it was expensive :D

Ping Europe is based at Gainsborough Golf Club (course was shut when I arrived at 0900 due to the frost), however very well sign posted and car parking spaces right in front of the club house reserved for those getting a fitting. A very warm welcome and a brief overview of why I was there and what I wanted to gain by getting new clubs.

Adam the fitter was really good, quite light hearted, especially on the first few shots. I'd been in the car for 90 mins and it was about 0C outside so I needed a bit of warm up. First 10 minutes was just used hitting my own clubs and getting some data after I'd warmed up.

We cycled through loads of different clubs and shafts and had a good discussion as well on how club heads look etc. It was definitely not a pressured sales environment at all.

Ultimately it was down to shafts that really made the difference (waiting for my confirmation email to confirm the shaft as I've forgot - spoiler I ordered :D). I decided on the i530 bang in the middle really which is as a golfer what I am, someone looking to improve towards a low handicapper. The look at address was the best I tried and the dispersion was the best by a mile on what I tried, including my old clubs.

Next onto the heavy machinery - G440 Max. Again once I got the right shaft in I could really see the results, much more forgiving than my LTDx and 10 yards longer more consistently. The 3 wood I have also LTDx has been the worse club in my bag, so much so I've started not taking it. Yes I know that's down to me losing confidence but from the first G440 I hit, it just felt different. I understand most of that is confidence but us golfers will take any advantage we can get!!

In all I've come away and ordered the irons in 4-PW and Driver and 3 wood and I'm very happy. I have upgraded shafts and grip and it came in at a whopping £1990 which although I never mentioned it was £10 under my budget / £1990 over the budget the Mrs had :D

Really fun morning and I look forward to the new gear arriving. Irons should be here next week and driver and 3 wood is looking start of February.

100%! Watching Joey Cold Cuts absolutely melt down and Bob dying with laughter is always a highlights, and FP seems like a genuinely funny and nice guy!

Oooooooooo baby, when I got my irons and wedges last year the feelings were mixed, half "Oh my word these are so nice!" and half "Jeebers i've just spent a lot of money!"

Enjoy them dude!

He did ask me about trying some wedges but I stood firm. I really don't need any and I really like my Vokeys. At a certain point my wife might divorce me too :D

Got demo driver today so took it out for some golf.

Lasted 7 holes.... freezing cold, far too slow (90 minutes for 7 holes on the very very short Fullarton course)... Standing around on every tee box for 5/8 minutes. Walked in.

Hit a few drives with the demo - seemed nice outside of the sim. Playing hopefully 18 on Sunday so proper test then.

Can't stand people taking so long in winter golf - Course is 4600 yards, get a move on, stop standing around chatting, holing everything out and waiting for playing partners etc - Ready golf.....

hate slow play, people don't seem to think these days, leaving their bag on the wrong side of the green is a personal dislike of mine.
