Golf Thread

The snow and lack of playing has given me time to reflect on the upcoming year and I've set myself the following (I believe achievable goals).

End the year at <=7 hcp (Currently 8.2) - so very achievable, but I've plateaued recently so work to be done.
Break or equal 75 - currently my best round is a 77 so knocking 2 off that is also achievable but it would have to be me at my best.
Win another club competition - I don't like presentation evening without a trophy so this one would be nice.
Play 12 new courses this year - also very achievable. I already have 6 booked in throughout the year and a trip to Florida in May should also tick 2-4 off.

I look forward to / dread coming back to this post in twelve months :D

Anyone getting booked up for any open competitions this year? I had a chance to play the comp up at Cruden Bay in August but had to decline it due to injury. Going to try and get a slot this year.

Had a few consecutive years doing the open comp at Trump international and Crail Golfing Society as well but might try for something different this year.

I had a look a bit ago actually on Golf Empire and it seems the only mens open that allows handicaps (e.g. not the 'scratch open') in Wiltshire is my local, there's Juniors, Seniors, Pairs/Teams and a couple of Mens Scratch but yeah...

Not looked yet for Surrounding counties or anything though, need to do that

Grant really must have sold his soul / be an excellent person making good links because he's really pushing on, first Tiger now Rory, alongside his relationship with Mickelson. Good on him.

I imagine the Tiger/Rory videos are just pushing the new Taylormade woods as they've just been released, all three are TM sponsored, and they're short little videos rather than a long form match that Grant usually does.

Still entertaining though, although Tiger didn't look very chipper in his one

The difference between Rory and Tiger in front of the camera is massive. Tiger has the aura but he always seems like he really REALLY doesn't want to share any of his secrets.

yeah - He's been a bit cheeky with these videos - Taylormade sponsored before he made these videos....

Now a part owner in Takomo - https://www.golfmonthly.com/news/grant-horvat-reveals-ownership-in-takomo-golf

Will still play balls/woods from TM but I can imagine they aren't too happy with those videos coming out the same week he ditches their irons....

Take it for what it is - a bit of a hit and giggle and another funny night in the TGL

Can't take the "competition part" seriously myself but it's entertaining for sure....

Kisner skulling a bunker shot and nearly holing the comebacker would have been all time par....Good to see Tiger laughing it up despite getting battered!

Fitting a local pro for GT today.

Played around with GT2 / GT3 head and a couple of shaft options.

Did laugh mind you at the start - forgot to bring a iron to warm up with - pro gave me Wilson Staff Blade 7 iron.... hit 4 shots with it all within 2 yards of each other :D ... Beautiful consistancy.... but a little scary thin top line to look down on....

Anyway....

After a bit of playing around - fairly set on GT2 head, 10 degree, with Tensei 1k blue stiff shaft was the best of the bunch.... Nice launch, bit more carry distance, fairly forgiving as well with off centre hits... Spin numbers were decent if a shade high but indoor is always difficult to get accurate spin numbers even on trackman.

I'll take the demo one out at the weekend if weather permits and have a hit but pretty sure I'll purchase.

Man Maths here - £150 in vouchers already with pro, Got £100 cash from in laws for Xmas/birthday money.... If I can get around £200 for my existing driver - that's only £120/£130 to switch.... :D

Need to now price up my existing driver for sale.... Shaft is the main selling point.....

Bryan Bros also in on it - Rick Sheils has some "hype" video up for an announcement on the 25th Jan as well - wouldn't surprise me either.

Saw a comment somwhere on that video, words to the effect of:

"Ready for you to stop trying to shape shots and just aim for the flag?"

Going to be in Australia later in the year for 8 weeks, and getting some golf organised, will hopefully be getting a round in here:

Will be buying four dozen balls to go in my bag, won't be looking for them in the bush with Brown Snakes about

yeah - Some of the comments were very funny....

  • Break 90 video?
  • Are you ready for me to blade more chip shots
  • Is the new era less content and more pushing merch?
  • Rick is the best 10 handicapper on YouTube
Rumours that he's moving to Florida seem to be fairly strong.

Not watched his videos for a long time but that's one thing that always used to bug me. He'd have a massive open fairway and all that was required was just to thump one down the middle but he insists on playing 'a drawy, fadey, high cutty, low one'. Just hit the ****** fairway!

I've jumped onto the Bob Does Sports page, so much more enjoyable.

My 2025 Golf Goals

Following what was meant to be a straight forward operation on my hip back in March 2024, a week later my femur snapped and I was laid up with no golf for 6 months.
I have manged to play a few times this year, mainly 9 holes but nothing like I was prior to the leg break.

I used to play about 2-3 times during the week after work in the summer, then Saturdays and at the end of 2022 I was down to a 2.3 Handicap and loving golf but now I am back to 7.8.

I am now scheduled to have a hip replacement and all metalwork removed from my leg on the 1st February!
My goal this year is to just get back out on the course and hit some balls and try and get back to normal.

Can't begin to tell you how much I have missed golf. Really looking forward to getting back out there!

Bob does sports videos are great fun, so refreshing when people don't take themselves too seriously, and some of the big time tour players they get on there doing silly challenges or chatting nonsense makes it all the better!

Rahm just smashing away tacos was a great watch!

I do think that Rick has been well over taken in way of quality of game but in fairness to him he looks to have worked hard over the past year or 2 to improve his game. It can't be easy trying to get to such a high level and run the biggest golf channel on Youtube (not that that is a bad thing).

I wouldn't be surprised if he moves to the US, I would if I was him, its not going to hurt and the access to courses new to him and more importantly all year round is going to be a bonus. This last year has seen a big change in my opinion for golf on Youtube. Looking at the success of Bryson, Bryan Bro's and Grant has probably forced him into a rethink if he wants to continue to grow. I still enjoy his videos.

First round of the year last monday, managed to find a course not too far away that was snow free (Forest Pines), still a bit frosty so ground was very hard and 'bouncy'. Managed an 89 but considering that included 3 x triples on the first 3 holes i was pretty happy. Missed an eagle putt on a par 5 but made the birdie which was pleasing. Looking forward to this year, hopefully getting out more than last year which was riddled with lots of off course personal stuff getting in the way of golf and mountain biking.
