If you are playing serious medal golf then you should probably invest in a GPS you can use in a competition. Either that or really hammer the practice rounds with your phone and just go with your judgement on the competitive rounds.

Sadly I am not in any medal golf competitions at the moment, im not even a member anywhere currently as I may have to move for work this year, but when I am settled and a member I will probably invest in a GPS I can use in competitions. But at the same time its one of those things I dont want to have to rely on all the time.

Guys, my iron play has gone to the dogs!!! I am playing off 21 and hitting the driver as well as I have ever hit it, and have been for the last 4-5 weeks, hitting nearly every fairway, but my iron play is up and down like a yo-yo!

I cannot even say I am doing one thing in particular, I seem to be doing everything randomly. Some shots are perfect (around 25-30%), the others come off the shaft, some off the toe and the rest I am either hitting thin or fat. It's a nightmare! I played on Sunday and just could not get any consistency.

It is extremely frustrating as iron play was always my strong point, and now every time I stand over a ball with an iron in my hand I have almost zero confidence.

Is there anything I can try myself to get myself back to basics or should I just plan a visit to the local pro for diagnosis?

I had a bad problem with my irons recently, went to the pro and he asked me about my faults, topping it, snap hook left, block right etc He wrote down on a piece of paper what he thought the fault was, then got me to address the ball with my 5 iron and showed me that i was about 3 inches too close to the ball (measure by putting the 4 iron head behind my left heel with the shaft pointing out in front of me, the ball was part way down the grip when it should have been right next to the end of the grip/shaft!), moved it out there and every shot was going great. It was all to do with having the ball too close which in turn meant i didnt have enough room to clear my body through the turn which brought my hands into play!

You know, you just might be onto something there, as recently I have been watching a lot of golf on the telly and I think I just may have moved myself closer to the ball trying to mimic some of the pros (silly I know, but it's easily done). Will give it a blast at the range with some more distance between me and the ball and see what happens.

Thats a great tip about using the 5 iron and 4 iron, had never heard of that before. Thanks :)

I need a new pair of golf shoes for around £50, what's the lowdown guys?

I bought some new Footjoy Contours yesterday (the ones without laces) - not a massive fan of "gadgets" on footwear, but 'Jes these are comfortable - like the most comfortable golf shoes I've ever worn. Bit more pricey than £50 (they were £70), but wow!

In other news - had a pretty epic day last week. Broke home course record by 2 shots (6 under 64) with 6 birdies, a eagle and 2 bogies. Chuffed much!!!

excellent work Dale - that's some shooting!

I had one of those "classic" golfing weeks.

Qualified for club championship handicap side. Played in last 16 match play on Monday night, hit the ball great, putted really well and was only 5 over (playing off 10) par for the 18 holes and won at the 19th.

Came back on Wednesday to play in last 8 round - couldn't hit a cows arse!! Played absolutely awful - could barely hit the ball, pulling everything and lost 8 & 6!!!!

Typical golf - one minute your on a high, the next you hate the game!!!

Here's some put-downs for you all to use, courtesy of a fine bunch of golfers on another site:

Driving - its the best part of your short game

Can someone else have a turn? (if your mate has just skinned a bunker shot and is making a general hash of things)

An Adolf - three shots in a bunker

Sister in Law - up there but i know i shouldn't be

Putting like a gynaecologists assistant - Shaving the hole.

A Rodney King - Over Clubbed

A Gerry Adams - Play a provisional

Apart from line and length that putt was perfect.

After a short drive by one of the lads - Does your husband play golf, and if so does he want your place next week?

And when he finally hits a goodun - well even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again.

"Keep your eye on it" when anybody tops one 10yards.

Another one for a skied drive is 'an elephants ********' - high & stinking.

'I'd have gone for the green from there !' is a lovely one when your partner (or opponent ) has flunked a straightforward pitch onto the green.

You need to take about 2" off your shafts....it wont improve the golf, but they will fit in the bin better!

Be interested to hear what you think of them out on the course.

My aging MP-67's are heading towards needing replacement (the head came off my 9-iron for the 3rd time last week lol) I have played a LOT of golf with them and really can't see me switching from Mizuno, but if I was I think I'd head to Titleist.

Bought myself a set of irons, Callaway X-14s. I've played 2 rounds of golf and decided to take the plunge :) I could do with a putter, what would you guys recommend for a beginner? Looking to buy second hand.

something simple - don't go for anything fancy/stupid looking.

If you can, go try a few before you buy a certain type. You may find you get on better with a two ball than a blade type. I spent quite a few afternoons up at my local range who stock a decent amount of putters before i took the plunge, and that was after taking 3 of them to try out at one of the local golf clubs putting green for a couple of hours.
