Golf Thread

Played on Saturday at Cray Valley and went round in 79 for a net 66 (par 70). Some good shot saves, some sloppy ones and two birdies made for an interesting warm up for my Easter game at the London Club. Inspired by the masters again and wanting to play loads more this year than in previous years.

Yep... know the feeling, every year is the same, the masters start and just tempts be back out for the summer!!

Had a lesson today with a PGA trainee was very impressed with him (and also cheaper). Pointed out I use way too much of my left side through my swing generating to much back spin and always prone to slicing way out right (a major issue I suffer with my driver) from not pushing through the ball.

After working on my swing my driver was going a lot straighter with a lot less loft!!

Looking forward to the bank holiday weekends ... time to get a lot of golf in!

Played at the London Club on the International course on Monday. Some difficult Par 3s over water with a tricky wind made for some interesting scores but generous fairways also left some opportunities for big drives. Chipping let me down again today and recently cored greens made putting a bit of a lottery.

Still, for £37.50 each it was still well worth the green fees.

A mate got the tee time through teetimes.co.uk. It was a 14:30 tee time on a Bank Holiday so a great price. The weird part was there was no-one ahead of us and no-one behind us for the whole round.

Word of warning. Walking that 18 is looonnnngggg. We played reasonably quickly and took five hours, largely down to long hilly walks between tees.

Right chaps, I need some advice.

I've been thinking about taking up golf for ages, but given the nice weather we're having it seems like now more than ever is a great time to get out there.

So, I'm going to get some lessons at a local club who do 7 for £100. Obviously I need to practise at a range inbetween lessons, so what's the basic stuff that I need?

I don't want to spend loads at this stage incase I find that I hate it, can I get away with the cheapo clubs they have in Sports Direct just for now? I'm assuming I'll need something along the lines of a driver and a few irons just to get the hang of things and get my swing going?

good idea re the lessons to start with - other than that I would see what the pro giving you lessons suggests. Even something like a 7 iron and a 3 wood to start with will be more than enough to go to the driving range with.

Learn with a 7-iron first. I wouldn't bother with a 3-wood but ask whoever's teaching you. A 7-iron is the iron most start with. The swing should really be very similar right through the irons but what you may learn if you stick at it is that there isn't one swing for any club let alone the whole bag. With each club there's a whole variety of ways to hit a ball and which one is "right" depends on what's being attempted.

Focus on your teacher and just concentrate on that for now.

Will see what the Pro says at my first lesson then.

A friend of mine learned with the same guy and said he's very good, but that practise between lessons really helped him (he had his Dad's clubs to use whenever he needed them though).

Will I need full Pringle attire for the lessons? Or does that depend on the club?

most ranges dont have a dress code, I have only been playing 6 months and only don the gear when playing a round, range time/lessons is either work gear or jeans & t shirt, also 1st lesson or 2 you wont need clubs as the pro will have some knocking about.

I'm playing a lot more golf this year, I think I've played more in the last 3 weeks than I did in 3 months last year. I've seriously got the bug again and loving it :D

I've had to invest in a Skycaddie though to remain competitive in comps. What's everyone elses thoughts on using GPS systems around the course?

I probably wouldn't have bothered but it seems everybody has got Skycaddies at our club nowadays.
Having said that I don't know how I got on without one now I've used it on a couple of rounds.
It has honestly saved me 3-4 shots on each round, and takes all the guesswork out, quite an amazing little device :)

bought one about 9 months ago and completely agree with the above.

Interesting round today!

14 bogies and 1 par thru 15 holes today! - consistency that I am looking for but ultimately not that good! (finished birdie, par, par!):D

I bought a Garmin S1 which is the wristwatch version, it gives distances to the front, middle and back of the greens, was very handy in Portugal when i went a couple of weeks ago, as all the distances over there are metres was nice having the yardages to hand.
Played Saltford nr Bristol today, great course with some of the best greens i've played on in the UK, shot 44 out and 38 in, my short game let me down but drove the ball great :) My brother went out in 44 but came back in 62 !!!!!!! lol

Thought I'd post this here for everyone to have a good laugh. It's a strange affliction Charles seems to have, but at least it should make everyone feel better about their swing :p;)

Anyone watching The Players at Sawgrass ?
Been plagued by rain delays unfortunately, McDowell is one on front on -12, i've got a couple of quid on Donald who is 3 back.
Poulter sprinted down the 17th then joined Mickelson and Laird on the 18th which they played as a fourball lol......to avoid the end of play klaxon.

Hi guys just completed my 2nd round of golf and shot a 98 (Heaton park in Manchester), after using my brothers clubs for a couple of shots (la jolla club knifes) I think my clubs are total pants, so question is what second hand clubs should I be looking at for around £100. Cheers
