Golf Thread

The previous Chrome Tour X was a decent ball but this just seems faster off all clubs and spins well with partial wedge shots.

Big fan of the Chrome Tour and used the X for a bit as well last year in the drought when the course was dry and fiery. Hearing good things about the 2026 model so will definitely try it out once I get through my hoard

Wow, down south we've been pretty dry for a while now and it's showing on the course, really getting some run/bounce again! Sounds completely different
Yep, almost seems as if we're back in drought conditions. Since the non stop rain in Jan/Feb it feels like we've not had any. Course is completely dry and in bare areas you can see it cracking already, could really do with @booyaka sending that rain down south!

My weekend one of a missed opportunity's to really put a dent in my handicap. Monthly stableford yesterday I was on 34pts through sixteen holes then blobbed the last two. Today medal comp, had a good front nine and was playing bogey golf on the back. On for a mid
80's round and shooting -3/4 nett but then finished six, eight! Both rounds still good enough to count for my handicap which will be down to 15.8 tomorrow but if not for those last two holes I could have been well into the 14's. My back to back good rounds are the next to come off so if I don't deliver next time out I'll be going back up.

Now now, sounds like you've got heat stroke or something, that's crazy talk! :p

Out today for a game in Bristol and played really solidly throughout, think it was 86 with a blob on the last hole, think I talked myself into it really as I left myself a second over the first of two lakes and said I'd put one into the water. Ended up putting 2 into the water. Then anger made my third attempt at a 5 wood go 256 yards! (downwind, and as mentioned dry/bounce/roll)

Decided for the lols to do an experiment, with my GT3 driver I was fitted into a 9-degree head with it set to A4, so +1.5 degrees loft. I've also spent a bunch of time with it in A3 which makes it more upright to counter that fade/slice. Today I set it (I need to re-do the head every time now I'm using an MX-5 anyway as I take it off when putting it in the boot) to A1, so 9-degrees and standard lie.

Unsurprisingly the first few drives were a touch slice-y :p Got used to it through and started hitting some really nice shots, not even lacking in launch/height really... Gonna need to try and get it on the launch monitor to see the numbers tbh.

Playing a rare Monday afternoon round tomorrow to get the monthly stableford in, hopefully the good golf continues...

Went out today with my wife for another round and after the 77 yesterday I managed a 76 today

Had a couple bad shots that cost me, but overall heading in the right direction

Decided to turn my driver loft down to 7° today just to see how it went and apart from hooking my first tee shot into the fairway bunker on the adjacent 9th fairway, everything else was either straight or a little playable fade

Got my first comp of the season at our new club next weekend so hopefully the form continues

7 DEGREES!!

jesus wept... That's long driver stuff.... Most pro's play with 10/11 degrees these days...

Played a foursomes pairs comp today with my friend. I'm not great at 14 but he's a very ropey 20.. I want to play with my friend but he drives me nuts.

He makes me play 10x worse than I am cause I am always trying to fix his messes and I can't pull it off, so it makes me look as bad.

I'll hit my drive down the middle, (I would normally hit my next show either close to the green or half way)
Instead he puts me in the trees or tops it.
I then feel like I have to sort out his mess and find the green, which is very hard or long, so I attempt some hero shot that goes wrong and then I look as bad as him.

We end up blaming each other when it's almost always his fault.

I was fitted to an 8° head by a Callaway fitter when I got the driver

Admittedly my swing has changed a bit over the last couple years but I do have a strong positive angle of attack, so the low loft helps with the launch conditions. At one point a good few years ago I was hitting up around 6-7° so it used to feel like I was hitting the ball more up than forward lol

I might turn it back up to the standard loft and try to flatten my swing out a bit as my back continues to recover

Most pros these days are hitting down on driver with their speed so the higher loft is fine for them

So i've traded in my 3 and 5 wood and have £200ish to spend on a hybrid. I have a TM QI35 driver, cobra irons and vokey wedges so i'm certainly mixing things up in brands.
My 5 iron is lofted at 23.5 so i'm not sure if i just need the nearest loft down from that for a hybrid or the same loft as i'd guess it'll go higher and stop quicker.
Ones that have caught my eye are the Titleist TSR1, TSR2 and Cobra DS Adapt
My aim is higher ball flight with some distance as i have always struggled with a low flighted shot, my swing speed is pretty much at the low end of reg shafts typically. The DS Adapt looks the part and would fit well with my irons being the same brand, my thought ont he launch is i can loft it up a chunk. The Titleist TSR1 looks to be really high launching without tinkering the and TSR2 is meant to be the most forgiving one.

I know the answer is normally get fit (can't afford new as i've spent so much on golf recently) or ping but i just don't like the look them.

I am eagerly awaiting delivery of my new Ping G430 irons, 4H and Max driver. I've been playing with some Big Berta irons from 2002 and Big Bertha woods from 2010-2014ish. I know new clubs won't make me any better, but it's nice to have something new and shiny :)

I have played golf on and off for the past 20 years, but probably 95% off and 5% on, so I am not great. My last round I improved significantly but just taking it slower, not trying to smash it hard, focussing on keeping it straight. I managed 8 holes without losing a ball, I was buzzing. I've got a work trip coming up with two rounds and an overnight stay, I can't wait!

Going out on Sunday on the course for the first since the end of October seeing as I feel as close to 100% as I have in a looong time. Been to the range once in that time a couple of weeks ago.

Can see it going one of two ways - best golf I've ever played or the worst, no in between...

Have you thought about a 7 wood? Seem to be the popular choice nowadays?

Took my new clubs to the driving range. I'm still terrible.

Jokes aside, the clubs feel really nice. I feel like I'm getting better feedback when I hit the ball, like I know straight away where it has come off the face of the club when I strike it. They are also very forgiving, I hit the driver a few times right from the toe and the heel of the club face and they still went straight (so long as the rest of my swing was OK).

Lots of bad shots as well obviously. I really should get lessons.

The clubs look so nice though, so there's that :D

Weekly round at work after work last week was the worst golf I’ve played in maybe 18 months.

Don’t think I hit a single decent shot, hooks, slices, tops, you name it, I did it :(

Think I was just swinging too fast instead of my usual smooth and controlled swing which has brought me success over the recent months.

Always next week!

Mate just picked up an Taylormade M6 hybrid for like £40 in local pro shop.. Try checking those places out.

Aside from that - something around 20/21 degrees sounds ideal. Either hybrid or 7 wood would fit the bill.

With GTS coming out soon from Titliest, that means TSR range should drop a bit more as the GT range fitted between them in terms of cycles...

Got my first official WHS handicap come through as 25. Anyone on here around that? Advice?
Looking to get into the teens by the end of the season. I played the other day and made bogey or double almost every single hole. At least I'm consistent! :) I also made my first birdie on my home course for the first time the other week. Got to take the positives eh!

Good stuff.... congrats.

1st thing I would say - Don't set expectations to get into the teens this year....

If you play well, it will happen, but don't aim for a specific handicap.

Things to make sure you know or have...
  • How far do you hit each club? With a decent shot (I know there will be some bad ones in there) - get a proper idea of each club in your bag - will make a massive difference knowing clubs rather than guessing clubs.
  • Short game, short game, short game and that includes putting. 65% of the game is from 100 yards and in yet people go and bang balls with driver etc at driving range. Get a putting mat for the house - hit 20 putts a night - get comfy doing that.
  • Try and get a pre shot routine... take out the variables - work on doing the same thing before each shot.
  • Most of all - enjoy it - frustrating game at the best of times
Good luck

How many of you use rangefinder vs watch vs just guess? :)

My boys stole my rangefinders so for the last month or so I've been just guessing yardages. Got really quite good at it, but I know it's silly. Off to Temu I go I think for another one. Can't afford a Bushnell!

Focus on the golf and not the handicap is what I'd say.

I'll echo everything that booyaka has said with extra emphasis on enjoy it. It's a horrible game where mindset plays a massive part.

Rangefinder for me - used watches etc but don't like things on my wrist.

Got a Bushnell but have used Aofar / Mileseey cheapo's on Amazon - like £60. Fine but less accurate after about 150 yards.
