Looking to get into golf. What’s a good starter club set? Notice Costco do a full set? Worth it or maybe goto the shop at the course?

Thanks
Before you buy any clubs, I would suggest finding a local golf club and see if they have an introductory 'Get into golf' programme that you could sign up to as they will likely provide clubs so that you can at least see if golf is something you want to truly get into (and they can then advise what might be good for you to buy)

If you are certain about it, is the Costco set a Callaway set? If so, I seem to remember it being mentioned as not bad for the price

Just be aware that if you do go down the golf route, it will be both frustrating and rewarding, along with potentially very expensive buying gear lol

The best suggestion anyone can give is to get lessons so that you don't ingrain bad habits that then take years to remove and put right

Get a 7 iron or something for now (ebay / local pro shop / facebook etc) - Just use that at local range/maybe get a couple of lessons if your interested... then consider a full set of clubs after that

Bounce game with mates on Saturday at Darley - good fun, no card in hand so just some silly doubles actions etc...

Sunday was handicap team match at St Nic's - blowing like 20/30mph - tough tough day for everyone.

Nailed 5 iron at 160 yard par 3 - came up short.... Next hole at 210 to flag, hit 7 iron though the green

I lost my match 4&3 - team won 4-2 overall. So that's 4 wins and draw from 5 games this season. Qualifies us into county knockout stages as winners of our group.... Royal Troon away game left but result doesn't matter...

Struggling still off the tee - lacking confidence in my swing - just a bit lost still....

Went out this morning and hit a 91. My best ever 18 hole score. Was drenched by the end. Went round as fast as I could (first out) which I think both helped and hindered. Helped in that I didn't over think longer shots and got into a rhythm. But putting I was awful, so I think I'm better when I slow that down. Bogied (or worse) every hole except 2 pars and 1 birdie.

I am finding my wedges of all things are just so inconsistent. Either a heavy chunk or bladed. I seem better with the 60 degree than my 56 or 52. I'm using the Kirkland wedges. Not sure if it's them or me. I used to play with older Callaway wedges that had less bounce and were less forgiving, yet I seemed to hit better with them. Strange.

Got a chance to play Dumbarnie Links yesterday which is about 10miles away from St Andrews & Kingsbarns.

Great experience, absolutely first class facilities and staff.

I was fearing the worst driving up as the weather was absolutely horrible but thankfully it petered out a short time after teeing off.

Played ok, wasn't swinging great and carded 82 but wasn't really caring about the score, would love to go back sometime on a sunny day.

The course design is brilliant, some really interesting holes and the condition of the fairways was unreal, never seen fairways as good as that before they were like carpets. There are 5 par 3s as well and I'd say 3 of these are absolute gems, right up there.

I'd say out of the modern links courses I've been able to play I'd definitely place Dumbarnie above Dundonald and Archer field, doesn't quite reach the wow factor of Trump International but it's very close to that level.

If anyone's interested there's a good vlog of Dumbarnie by a guy on YouTube, Danny Elder golf, worth a watch

20 minutes along the road from me and I've yet to play it. Hoping to get a shot during the summer.

Mate used to caddy there every weekend and made a fortune - he's also played a few rounds for free at the end of season caddies day.

Had a few days away at the beginning of the week with my wife and another couple for our annual golf trip

This year we went a couple hours away to Bridlington and played Bridlington, Driffield and Filey. The forecast did not look good for all trip but luckily it changed for the better and we only had a bit of rain at Filey

Bridlington - quirky course and has recently had some changes that rendered my watch useless for a few holes (par 5 changed to a par 4 and a par 3, then later a par 3 and par 4 combined to make a par 5) but it was okay, just needed local knowledge to be able to score well

Driffield - nice course, but again, local knowledge is definitely needed to know where to put a number of tee shots

Filey - the best of the courses we played, but still a few holes that you need to know how to play if you want to score well

We are already talking about going back again next year and playing some of the other courses that are available in the deal we got as it was good value we felt - £245 per person for 2 nights B&B and 3 rounds

Unfortunately my golf was terrible and I never broke 80 all trip, some of that was not knowing the courses, but mostly it was down to leaving my golf swing at home lol

Going to the range tomorrow to see if I can figure things out and then got a tee booked with my wife on Sunday afternoon for probably 9 holes as she has just picked up her new 5w this evening as it arrived earlier than expected

Dunno if I've posted about this before but it's renewal time at my local, and I've been on the fence for a while although think I've maybe got 'the plan' sorted, maybe :p

My issue with my local is that the greens are kinda terrible, they get (as in regularly, not a one off) diseased late in the year/over winter so although they've recovered a bit by now they're still the worst greens I play on by a decent margin. They also don't water them enough so they're super firm which is just a pain. Add in that the tee boxes are fairly poor in terms of flatness but also several of them are limited in their grass coverage shall we say :p Both of these combined is pretty damning really, 2-3 shots per hole are affected... There's also a question about maintenance, not so much day to day stuff but there was a bridge over the ditch on the 9th and 7th that were failing so they removed them over a year ago and not replaced them so you need to walk around, there's a hut on the 9th with a bench, or nowadays without a bench, and half the roof.

But, on the other hand, it's cheap at £496, although that's up 5% this year. The social side is great, some really good people, and it's super convenient being 8-10 minute drive from home.

Not sure if this goes onto pros or cons but it's a tough course, even ignoring green/tee issues above, it's short so rated 'easily' but actually a really really tight and tricky course where you have to think and manage your way around, especially lately with no general play rounds from other courses on my handicap index this generally seems to give me a higher index so easier to win comps

So yeah, was/am looking at alternatives although maybe left it a little 'late' at this point. But there's several courses I'd consider a full switch to in terms of distance from home, Chippenham, Erlestoke, Cumberwell Park, Bowood and Kingsdown all around 8-10 miles/20 minutes from home. I kinda discounted Bowood because it's expensive and Cumberwell Park cause I already play there 2-3 times a month and it can super busy/slow when there's events on (it's like a resort-y course, ish), Chippenham isn't the nicest drive either but should probably consider it more now I'm writing this. Issue being, and why I've maybe left it a bit late, is that I hadn't played several of these, including Kingsdown and Chippenham, I say hadn't as I played Kingsdown yesterday...

Kingsdown is also interested as they've just been added to 'Playmoregolf' a points based subscription thing, so my thinking/'the plan' was to maybe renew at my local (for one more year...) and then do something like Playmoregolf, or at Erlestoke they have an off-peak membership cheap-ish, as a secondary membership,

So yeah, went to play Kingsdown yesterday and kinda viewed it as a potential membership course, full membership there is ~£1250 plus a £250 joining I believe, so bit of a jump from my local. But, the tees were lovely and flat with grass and everything, and the greens were much better too, probably nothing special but when compared to my local it's night and day. Also got a really nice short game practice area, didn't use the range but it's meant to be nice (but my local is also building a brand new range so whatevs). One thing I found, being overly critical, is things like the warmup nets were a bit manky, like not terrible but under trees and didn't seem to have been cleaned/powerwashed in a good while.

But overall the course was nice, got an option for just 9 and that can be starting on either 1 or 10, some good views and generally a nicer place to be/play than my local tbh. Then I re-checked the playmoregolf 'matrix' and I can only book after 9am on weekdays and 12pm on weekends which is a bit meh maybe, especially with work during the week/winter I'd barely get to use the points so it'd basically just be saturdays really with my other golf stuff.

So yeah, dunno what to do really, not sure playmoregolf makes sense really, but full membership is quite costly certainly if I wanted to do both, and if I didn't like the club for whatever reason feels like throwing away the £250 joining fee. But it is a much nicer course to play than my local, much nicer.

And so ends the wall of text...

Bloody windy today, really struggled keeping the ball in play of the t and getting distances dialed in. Yesterday's round dropped me nearly 2 of my handicap and I suspect today's 23pts will add them back on. Out tomorrow morning with my eldest and if it's as windy tomorrow I'll be getting through the bag of cheapo balls.
Medal next week so let's see how that goes I suppose

Lost in the summer matchplay yesterday, played horribly. Neither of us that great which was why it was only 1DN.

This morning just a stableford qualifier off the yellows. Playing off 13 scrambled my way to 35pts thanks to a strong finish. Only 30 putts which was nice despite missing a tidler on the 6th. A 14.5 differential should see me down into the 13's for the first time tomorrow!

Just back from a 2 day 1 night at Slaley Hall.

Good time with the boys (12 of us) - But my golf game is a shambles...That's the worrying thing. :(

Got down there and 10/15 balls on the range.... I shanked four 7-irons in a row to start with..... Honestly.... I think I've shanked a ball once in the last 3 years..... That had me absolutely rattled, was terrified... No idea where that has come from.

Priestman course Friday - tough weather.... Very windy, and then back 9 wild rain showers every 5/10 minutes - then roasting sunshine. Was tough tough conditions. Course is very good condition and even off the yellow, was a tough test. Weather was brutal however, so changeable and most of the par 5's were unreachable even in 3 shots, with the wind.

Good over night stay, food was excellent and some beers.

Hunting course this morning - just had 4 days of the PGA championships on it - excellent conditions and they had left all the pin placements from the final day. However, even more wind, but no rain at least this time. Wind was like 20-25mph gusting 30-35 at times..... Exposed me massively with my struggles at the moment. Even a slightly bad shot was punished in the wind... Brutal conditions...

Think I scored 22 points first day (playing handicap was a laughable 4 off the yellows) and then 16 points today total on the Hunting.... Potentially my lowest ever stableford score in 15/20 years....

Really really down about my game at the moment - feel completely lost with my swing. Need to somehow find some practice time but with club champs knockout on Monday night starting, and then a doubles tie on Wednesday, looks like I'll be short of time.

5.4 handicap is killing me at the moment - not even close to that in my last 5-8 rounds - still got "counters" from last July in my "best 8 of 20" - Hardly a reflection of my current game using scores from 11 months ago!

Good time, good value and well worth a visit to Slaley Hall, think that's our 3rd year going now.

Played this morning with my eldest, had some issues with the guys in front being terribly slow to the extent we skipped a hole and went back to it, think we finished about 4 holes in front of them. Don't mind people taking there time but at one point one guy did about 5 practice swings then stood ready to hit his ball for about 10 seconds before hitting it into the rough. My eldest plays of 30odd and i ensure we're going at a decent pace. We took 3 hours 45 for 18 holes whereas normally its under 3 hours with no hold ups. 2 balls should not be taking that long. I know the club can't do out but i emailed them to let them know of the issue as it could be a problem paring they need to have a word with.
I played ok playing off course handicap of 20 i went round 18 over with a few double bogeys in it and a couple were me trying new things.
3 rounds over the weekend, will be out on Wednesday to practice short game then round on saturday in a comp and sunday with my eldest.

Decided (stupidly) to book a 7:30am tee time when I knew I'd only be getting 3 hours sleep before watching the Scotland game and then game 5 of the NBA Finals last night.

Normally play better when I'm tired but it's safe to say the round was an absolute disaster....

Another 14.5 differential today in a medal comp, 87 gross/73 nett (par 72). Looking back at the card five up and downs from around the green to save par or bogey. 31 putts total including a 30ft up the hill at the par three 4th for birdie :). Was having a good back nine until a double/double finish took the gloss off.

More importantly my index will continue its downward journey. 13.8 this morning should come down to 13.5 tomorrow. My eight counting scores will all be rounds in the eighties, something I'll need to maintain in order to keep it there!

Maybe time to submit a few general play scores :p

More seriously sounds like time to visit your pro for a tune up, probably something minor that's crept into your setup/grip/swing. Don't recall any posts from you so far this year saying you'd payed them a visit.

Bit of a disaster round this afternoon despite striking the ball better than last weekend overall - finished with 85

The wind was up, but I also think the club had prepped the greens for what I think was a major comp this morning off the tips (7,000yds+) as the greens were a LOT faster than they have been recently with the toughest pins I have seen since joining, and I had a number of 3-putts as a consequence

To give an idea of the wind, I flushed a drive on 10 that went just over 205yds, then 290yds on 11 - guess which hole was into the wind lol

Got a couple tee times booked after work a couple nights this week, so will struggle through it all

100% need to get some general play scores in - but finding the time is difficult at the moment.

Need to practice - I know what I need to practice - got all my old videos/pictures/diagrams from my pro - but again - time is the issue.

Similar to me, walked off after 9 and went home.
