You do come down quite quickly it seems.
Did the club on the floor like that help with the slicing of the driver ?
Something i suffer with which is a nightmare as it makes every hole much harder playing from the rough or bushes or sand or bloody trees ... lol

Also what is the thinking behind the club lying like that ?
Do you try to swing along that line ?

The club helps a lot with slicing the driver, I hit about 8 drives yesterday and 6 were pretty straight, the other 2 slices like I have always done in the past. The thinking behind the club angled like that is I have ingrained an over the top swing plane so need some dramatic practice to get rid of it. At my lesson the pro got me trying to visualise swinging along the plane of the club on the ground and because that plane would cause an inside out swing, it would force me to break my outside in swing and end up with a correct plane. It works surprisingly well and I can feel the difference in my backswing so much so that I can do it without the club to look at, just not as well.

Other thing he had me doing is to put a ball about 5 inches in front and a club face width towards my body from a ball I'm trying to hit and to hit the ball without hitting that ball in front. It works too but I hit the front ball about 50% of the time, sending it out into the range, and I'm not made of money, lol

Give it a go, it seems to be working well for me, hitting the ball better than I ever have but still require a lot of work

Had a look at your video. As I said before in this thread, I am no expert and have plenty of my own flaws :p

But I think your balance looks a little bit weighted on your heels, and this will no doubt be making you come across the ball outside to in, as you are almost falling off it backwards.

Also, it looks to me like you are very static, in fact you almost transfer your weight back towards your right foot on impact, rather than pushing your weight forward towards the left foot. This could well go hand in hand with the balance problem.

Try to get more onto the balls of your feet, and get a little more flex in your knees. Also, try a little less of the 'stick your butt out like a duck' stance :p

Finally a good way to make yourself follow through is to push your right hand forward as if you are going to shake someones hand. Even try this just with a club in your hand. It pretty much forces you to follow through properly.

Diggsy, thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! You know, I've never even thought about where my weight is on my feet before. I just picked up my 7 iron and took my normal stance and you are totally right, all my weight is on the back of my feet. I am going to the range tomorrow and will really put effort into thinking where my weight is during the swing. I do have balance problems on the follow through so I'm hoping that this can be cured with your advice.

With regards my bum sticking out, I was hit by a car a decade ago and as a result my back is totally crap, it's really hard for me to stand with my back straight and this way helps but I know there is room for improvement.

The pro said there is a lot of good qualities to my swing which I felt elated about but at the same time, I know how inconsistent I am and know there is a lot to work on. I will report back after my trip tomorrow, thanks again for your comments

Hi everyone,

Having recently gotten back into golf after around 5 years off, I have been working on my swing. Previously, I had a lot of problems with pulling every shot to the left with my irons, and slicing my driver like mad. I took a lesson last week and the pro picked up on 3 things: My posture wasn't great (very slumped, not athletic), my back swing and subsequent transition were a bit too rushed, and I was coming over the top of the ball a bit. He got me using a spare club on the ground at around a 45 degree angle to the target line as a mental plane to swing for, and this has helped no end with the pulls and slices. Still a long way to go though!

Anyway, I have made a quick composite video clip of 3 shots I hit at the range earlier today, and after each full speed swing, I have added a slow motion replay. I *think* I can see my coming over the top still slightly, but not entirely sure. Each of these shots went around 150 yards within a few metres to the left of my target line but all started out a little right with a slight draw bringing them back to target (perfect so I'm told!)

Anyway, enough of my waffling, If anyone can give me any feedback I would really appreciate it!

Hi

On the whole you have a good swing your but if I may offer a few pieces of advice

1. Your weight is to far into your heels (as stated above). Resulting in you falling backwards as you complete the follow through.

2. Your swinging to fast. Resulting in the left foot spinning out as you go through the ball. (Watch the footwork of the pros)

3. Probably the most important point of all from my point of view. You do not retain your spine angle as you swing. As you swing through the ball your standing up straight. This will be the main cause of fat and thin shots for you. Watch some swings of Luke Donald and see how he keeps that spine angle right through the shot

You're welcome, oh and I couldn't agree more with your pro, you do have what looks like a very good swing. Just needs some fine tuning. Amazing how much difference small changes can make.

Some excellent advice above too btw ^^

SnoozE, thanks a lot for the advice. As well as working on my weight on the feet, I will also try to slow down my swing a bit to see if I can stop that left foot moving (it's funny, I have watched my video dozens of times and only noticed the left foot sliding out when you mentioned it to me, just goes to show how valuable filming your swing can be!!). I notice the spine angle problem now too, and have been working on a drill I saw on youtube which can be practiced at home. Again, I will work on that again tomorrow. Really appreciate the contructive feedback, I am sure it will lead to positive gains!

Diggsy, thanks again for your help, really appreciate it!!!

Your welcome I hope they help. Would you mind posting a link to the drill you saw I have a couple of other folks I play with that this may be of use to :)

Out of interest a couple of really good youtube teachers I like to watch/listen to are:

Jeff Ritter - jritter5
Sevam1 AKA Secret in the Dirt

SnoozE, the drill I have been using is as on youtube here:

another way, with similar thinking is to get into your normal stance and have a friend rest a club against your back right trouser pocket and then have them swing without the club falling but that obviously needs someone to place it for you :) I have been practicing this today at work :)

Thanks for the tips re the youtube teachers, I will check them out. Wanted to hit the range tonight but the wind is so strong the balls would probably blow back and hit me on the head!!

Hi all, think I may have posted a while back but can't remember. Just taken golf up this year (fast approaching 40 and felt I needed the exercise), joined a club, had a few lessons and playing off 26, best round was an 85 on a par 69 but since getting my h.c I seem to have too many blow up holes (3-4 triple/quad card wreckers a round with 2 or 3 birdies and pars thrown in just to tease me) although I did get 40 points the other week only to come 3rd with the winner getting 45!!!!

I suffer with a dreaded slice atm but will be booking some lessons over the winter to try and sort my swing and ingrain it before next seasons onslaught on the monthly medals :D

my current bag is...

Nike VR 10.5 driver aldila stiff
Titleist 906f 15 deg 3 wood diamana reg
Nike VR 2 & 3 Hybrid aldila stiff
Titleist 775cb irons 4-pw reg
Titleist Vokey 54 & 60 deg
Odyssey 2ball belly putter

looking to purchase a vr 3 wood in the near future and that will be me for a few years hopefully

hope this weather eases before Saturday

another youtube fav of mine is Mark Crossfield http://www.youtube.com/user/4golfonline

along with Clemshaw etc

Mark Crossfield is a great find he is very good but I must admit that I dislike watching Clemshaw videos, he does talk some good golf sense but he comes across as an arrogant ****** in his videos and comments

I really need to get back playing again. Only played 9 holes with my grandad last time I went out but I scored: 3/3/4/3/4/3/6/4/5 - those last 3 holes were horrendous, the 8th is a 3/4 PW for me as well as it's only 115 yards, fluffed it left, yet the 4th is a 240 yard hole uphill all the way, yet I spanked a 5 wood straight as a die to within 12ft

Thanks a lot for that, looks perfect, and easy to try. Just had a go now and I can definitely feel a lot of difference in my hips. It's far too windy and rainy AGAIN to hit the range, so I am hoping for tomorrow. I will try and get some new videos up with any improvements I make!

Gibbo, why the belly putter if you have only just taken the game up? they are reserved for the veterans of the game that have the yips. :D
BTW a quick fix to lessen the effects of a slice is to move your left foot forward (not left)a couple of inches, this makes it harder for your body to swing round instead of the correct plane. You could also try gripping the clubs slightly further to the right too, this keeps the hands a little more square if you are openng the face at impact.

Get on over to the golf monthly forums too, couple of pros and a load of decent blokes there to give advice and you can even upload videos somewhere and link for assistance/critique.

already on the GM forums Brendy, thought I recognised the name ;)

as for the stiff shaft, I have a reg shafted cobra but its too whippy, my teaching pro recommended trying a stiff, its a big improvement, the slice is purely down to a naff out to in swing path which I am working on, when I am on it I can fade or draw but the old habits creep in all too easily...

Just out of interest dazza where do you play? You've got some pretty short holes wherever it is!

So I had a strange experience today.

Was out on the range with my G20's, and my mate, who is also the club pro was out with his Callaway RAZR-X blades. Now from my previous experience I struggle to hit blades at all, this is why I went for the G20's, as they are more for game improvement.

However, I was hitting much better with his blades than I was with any of my G20's. It's got me thinking I should start saving for a set of blades for next season

Of course, it may just have been a 1 off today, but the blades sure felt good!

Blades are beautiful to hit when you're on your game. If you don't hit them in the sweet spot though, they can be a nightmare - and can give you a hell of a jolt up your arm too :D
