Golf Thread

So, who is still playing rounds of golf now that the weather has turned colder and the fairways have become more sodden? I'm a relative newcomer to the game and have plenty of enthusiasm still and I want to be out at every opportunity, but friends tend to shy away at this time of the year...

Are you still playing, or have you put your bag away for the winter?

BTW, I've changed my bag from a set of Dunlops from Sports Direct to the following.

Taylormade Burner 10.5
Taylormade Burner 3 wood
Taylormade Burner Hybrid
Wilson Di9 4 - SW
Odyssey 2 Ball Putter
Cleveland 60" Wedge

I'm only playing 18 at the weekend now the longer nights have set in, although I'm still going up the range a couple of times a week to keep my swing in check. It's even better for me this year as a new range has opened just 5 mins up the road. I've gotta say it's the best range I've ever visited and it's right on my doorstep! Not only that but it's also got a very nicely kitted out large shop, a fitting centre and lessons available from any of the 3 pros working there. My credit card may have to be dusted off before much longer! Here's a link if anyone's around the Stafford/Stone area - Stone driving range

Some pics :)

Looks an awesome range

My club have been running a range night at a local range near where I live. Its really good we pay for our balls and our Teaching Pro comes along and give us all a few drills and tip to work on.

I took a video of a couple of swings on my phone

Yup still playing. Played a local links course the other day - bone dry, was lovely to play and the greens were fantastic for December!!

Was absolutely freezing mind you, but the tried and tested several layers approach worked great. This is my outfit for the very cold days..

Base layer - Under Armour Cold Gear Compression (top and bottoms)

Mid layers - Standard Golf Polo Shirt, Golf Jumper and Golf Trousers

Top layer - Stuburt Waterproofs (top and bottoms)

Combine this with a Stuburt beanie hat, 2 pairs of socks, the trusty Stuburt winter mittens and some hand warmers tucked inside them and you're set for pretty much anything! Only thing that I felt any cold on at all was my face :D

Nice swing Snooze! how often do you practice? I'm trying to get up the range a couple of times a week through the Winter.

Any plans afoot for a winter OcUK golf society day? Main problem would be the the weather I would think...

I am up for bash if we can get something organised

I'm always up for a round, I guess apart from the weather it's also where we'd play? Where's everybody else based?

Had one of my all time best rounds this weekend despite the wind and rain. It was definitely the best start I've ever had :D

That is a very nice swing, although I noticed on the other video that he has quite a bit of forward head movement before striking the ball. But hey if it works, then where's the problem :D

1. Thanks for the comments. Generally I play on Saturday and Sunday morning and try to practise 1 or 2 times per week.

2. What I would suggest is that all the people who are definitely up for it post their location so that we can plot all the locations on Google maps and pick a course near the centre point

3. My location is Banbury Oxfordshire OX16 0SJ

4. Great round and what a cracking start 3 birdies straight off the bat I bet your ass was twitching trying to hang on to that for the rest of the front 9

Thanks for the comments... and your absolutely right I have a couple of major flaws that I am working to solve

1. I have way to much lateral movement both backwards in the backswing and forwards as I attack the ball

2. I get across the line at the top of the backswing which can lead to a straight push or a pull hook if I dont time the strike properly

Its still work in progress and I work hard to get the issues sorted. Although having said that I need to start to work on my short game more than my long game. I take 3 or 4 shots to get into the hole from 100 yards or less far to often for me to be able to really push my handicap down to scratch

This is what is keeping me at a high (21) handicap, only my trouble is from 60-70yds and in. Everyone I play along with tells me that I am essentially a 10-12 handicapper with a crap short game :p:D
