Same as me yesterday. Always fade the driver (not deliberately :p ) but yesterday was pulling them off the tee. 3 off the tee 3 times, water, 2 unplayables, 2 up against the face out of four bunkers... Shot 91.

Ha I wish it was as would have had a Net59, but then would have got the 'handicap bandit' treatment!

Unfortunately I played in my first comp in a few weeks ago and shot a +25 :mad:, but had massive slice issues, which I fixed in literally 10minutes at the range.

Using a more In to Out swing path now and my shots were so much better hence the +14 :)
 
Ahoy fellow golfers!

Absolute amateur here, I have just bought a set of wilson prostaff and have been going down the driving range for the last 3 weeks with some good results there. I'm watching various youtube lessons for tips.

But when I get onto the course my goodish results on the range mean nothing, I play like crap! I have played three rounds of golf so far and each time I lost at least nine balls!

I use golfshot for my scoring and Skydroid for GPS, skydroid is rather cheap and does exactly the same... With skydroid you can download the courses you want stored on the phone and then rely on GPS on the course.

It's very common oulton.

Firstly, I would recommend (if possible), practicing off the grass and not the mats as they force bad habbits. Secondly, it's important to keep your routines the same as the course i.e. don't smash 100 balls one after another - instead buy 50, take your time and ALWAYS aim for a target (don't always aim straight either as you'll become reliant on the mat for allignment).

You will find that the range is very limited, for reasons such as lying in the heavy rough. You can't replicate that on the range and you will only learn how to do shots like this from experience.

Another good tip would be to always check your fundamentals i.e. grip, allignment and posture. The pro's check this everyday and you should as well.

I'd also recommend taking a couple of lessons with a pro before you get into too many bad habits.

It's far easier to correct a fault you've only been doing for a few weeks than something that's been ingrained into your muscle memory for years!

Just got back from the range, my chipping was decent but my long irons and driver/wood were very inconsistent, lots and lots of slices! :confused: I'll be getting some lessons asap!

Probably the most common fault from an amateur as well. Normally caused by a couple of things:

1) Weight not on front front - weight backwards
2) Swing plane too steep causing out to in swing path


As the guy said above, a lesson is probably the best thing to do, so you don't pick up any habbits.
 
Had a lovely game with my dad yesterday. I haven't touched a golf club in over a year and I'm crap anyway. Hit half a basket of balls on the range before our tee slot just to warm up. First drive on the course... pretty nice. About 120 yards away from the pin. Lazy 9 iron to within 1' from the hole... In for a birdie...Nice way to start :)

I wish it could have been like that all the way around, but I only hit one bad drive all the way around. I think the longest was 289 yards. I didn't hit any truly terrible shots... just poor aiming, really. Nothing to get worked up about (and I have NO patience for golf).

It was just a nice, relaxing, no-rage way to spend a little over 3 hours, with my old man :)

I think I'll leave it another year before my next round, since that seems to do the trick :)

This doesn't compute. :confused: Unless of course you used to play off scratch or at the very least a half decent single digit handicapper. Unfortunately the "I'm crap anyway" comment seems to suggest otherwise? :p

Well, I used Skydroid on a round earlier in the week and, if I'm honest, I couldn't really get to grips with it.

I find it helps my game to write a very detailed scorecard - clubs used, the ball flight, where I played from, mis-hit shots, put distance, etc. And I was sort of hoping that Skydroid would enable me to make that process a little easier, but it didn't really seem to have all the options I was looking for.

Is there anything out there which can track the path of your shots, in a simple 'point-to-point' sort of way? I thought the little 'track' button on Skydroid would do just that and overlay the result on a course map. but it didn't seem to facilitate that.
 
What's the general consensus on hybrid clubs vs. fairway woods?

Way back when I last played golf I think hybrid clubs had just started to really gain momentum as a viable option, and now they seem like the first choice for many golfers. Yet when I was at the range yesterday, I saw just as many people with fairway woods as I did hybrids, and plenty with both in their bags.

I appreciate you can generally get a fairway wood with a greater degree of loft, but is it more of a confidence thing for replacing long irons or are they a viable 'additional' club for certain types of shots?
 
I have a fairway 3 and hybrid for a 5. The hybrid and my 3-iron have similar distances but completely different trajectories. So the hybrid is far better our of rough and where I need carry and short roll but the 3-iron is better off the fairway and where I want to shape it. I find it very hard to shape the hybrid at all.

But I guess for most people the hybrids would simply replace the 3 and 4 irons where I used it to replace an aging 5-wood.
 
Why does Tiger play so well when he's injured? Maybe because he doesn't try to swing so hard! I wish he would go back to playing with a 90% swing.
 
Anyone have any recommendations for a GW?

Looking at one of these:

- Cleveland 588 RTX
- Mizuno MP-T4
- Titleist SM4 Vokey

All priced quite similar and will be going for a 52 degree, as I've currently got a 10 degree gap between my SW and PW!
 
Can anyone recommend a decent/cheap 3 wood for a high handicapper (26)? I've been looking at Fazer XR9 fairway wood from American Golf but no idea if it is any good?

I know I can look on auction sites but there are so many to choose from it's hard to know what is decent for such a high handicapper :(

At the moment I just cannot get on with a driver and tend to just leave that in the car, however my uncle recommended that I try a 3 wood instead off the tee. Right now I'm mainly using a 4 iron hybrid club off the tee.

Read that advice somewhere before and put it in to action, haven't used my driver for over a year. Must admit, I find using the 3 wood fills me with a little more confidence now I know my tee shots are a lot straighter.

Most would suggest trying a few different brands, but if you're not looking to spend much then I would suggest a Taylormade Burner.
