My speed journey:
I've done 2 sessions with my speed sticks this week so far. Will look to do another one on Thursday and then playing in golf society on Saturday.
I'm lucky I have all of the equipment to be able to map out my speed as I go through it, so I'm building a spreadsheet on my phone as I go along.
If any of you don't know what the speed sticks are, it's 3 golf 'sticks', all driver length, but with metal weights on the end.
Green, Blue, Red
Light, Medium, Heavy.
Green (light) is nice and whippy.
Blue is a lighter than your driver.
Red is a little heavier than your driver.
You're meant to go all out, so you're meant to warm up before doing it.
It goes like so:
Setup to where a ball would be.
Swing as fast as you can, as if you were hitting your driver, using the green stick.
Do this 3 times.
Repeat, as if you were a lefty... (I'm a righty). This is to swing with the alternative muscles in your body, to ensure good balance in your swing.
Repeat the above using the blue sticks, then again with the red sticks.
Then lastly, use the green sticks again, both righty and lefty swings.
Then go and measure your drives on a monitor within the next couple of minutes.
This is to build up neuro muscular speed which isn't necessarily strength related. Basically it helps teach your brain how to make speed.
I do my training on the mat that I use with my SkyTrak, so I can quickly test after.
Beat my PB of 255y today, hit a whopping 262y total. That's a big number for me, swinging my driver around 96MPH, according to SkyTrak (145mph ball speed).
I also use a PRGR to track my swing speed of the sticks as I go through, so it'll be nice to see my swing speed increases over the next few weeks with the sticks and then to see if it translates to speed with the driver on SkyTrak.
According to blogs and youtube, it can translate to a quicker swing speed in all your clubs. Not talking top speed, but your average goes up the more you do it.
My original thought was that, my misses would be way worse with my trying harder to swing faster, but the way it works is, your top end speed may show worse results, but because your average swing speed goes up - you end up faster without trying to be faster and you're able to control it better too.
I'll report back as times goes on to see if this returns anything interesting for me
