Dundonald Texas Scramble on Sunday

Cracking day out - stunning course - very complexed greens, quick and loads of slopes/bowls/levels etc.

Course was packed - £200 for the 4 ball, 8 minute tee times from 7.30am till 4.30pm....

We played solid- team handicap was 8.4, we had 5 birdies, 13 pars. Noting spectacular and finished with 58.6 team score. Winning score was 53.5.

About 25th out of 70 teams. Full use of the clubhouse facilities, practice range etc

Lovely course to play, fair test as the fairways are wide enough but the greens are very very complicated. Signature hole 13th along the railway - 380 yards. I hammered a drive downwind 328 yards, left a flick over the burn to a very close pin, I hit it to about 4ft and holed the putt as well (didn't need my team!!) for a nice 3.

Also we birdied the last 18th - amazing hole with another burn in front of the green, my drive again was miles down there - left 205 to the flag, I hit it just left of the pin about 3/4 yards off the green and we got up and down for a nice birdie.

Cracking day out - I think the company that run these events cover England as well now.

100% worth a look - great value.

Got out on course today for the first time in 20 years or so. Nine holes at one of my local courses, Rustington: Click for hole layout

The perfect parkland course for a beginner. Short (even more so today with temporary greens while maintenance takes place), wide fairways and minimal places to lose your ball. A quick warmup beforehand on the range got some bad shots out of the way, I was ridiculously nervous. One put on the practice green, which had also just undergone maintenance, holed it from 10ft and thought its not going to get any better than that :p and onto the first tee.

The nerves were still jangling but thankfully I avoided duffing my driver. A gentle clip down the right under some trees. This provided the first lesson of the day, none of the tees I had in my bag allowed me to tee the ball up for driver as high as I would have liked. I wasn't planning on going for it anyway today but with the lower ball height on the tee I had to be more careful. This turned out to be a good strategy as I took driver at every opportunity and found the fairway every hole thereafter, even if I was only clipping it 170-180 yards :)

Second lesson of the day is there is no substitute for on course play, especially with the fairways being a little threadbare, completely understandable given the long hot dry spell we've had down south. The look at address is so different to a lush range matt and I'll blame this for several of my duffed iron shots :p Highlights of the round were a well struck 3W on the second, followed up by two consecutively topped 3W's on the par 5 sixth. Putting was mostly solid, just a few I didn't commit to as I had on the practice stroke which cost me. Even thought I was going to get round without losing a ball but a duffed 8 iron on the ninth tee put paid to that (water)! On the plus side I avoided any trips to the beach.

Scorecard
Hopefully you can view the photo if you click on the link. If not I can let you know I made 48, which I was delighted with :D Getting under 50 was the goal. Aside from eights on the two par 5's my worst score was a five, with two par scores at holes three and four. Greens will be back in play later in the week so may go back then for some more. Should make judging the yardages easier too.

As aside I did pick up some Stromberg (makes me feel like a Bond villan) spikeless golf shoes before the round. Intend to wear them in at home and on the range first before using them out on course.

Well I think I'm just about recovered from my little excursion.

Thursday myself and a friend played Lindrick (Home of the Ryder cup many moons ago). Really nice course and scored well. Ended up with 37 points. Had a bite to eat and a drink afterwards in the very nice club house.

Then onwards to Scotland for 4 days and 4 rounds. A group of 12 of us do a trip each year and play a sort of Ryder Cup format.

The first course was at Peebles Golf Club and was perhaps the worst of the 4 courses we played but it was by no means a bad course it was actually really nice the following 3 were just exceptional. This was a team format but despite scoring 37 points personally, my partner had a poor day and we lost 2 & 1.

The second course was in the town we were staying in @ Hawick and what a course. Situated on the side of what felt like Ben Nevis and with weather to match it was a very challenging course. 40 mph winds and side ways rain made things tricky. Luckily the rain didnt last long and some of the holes were out of the wind coming back down. The course had some really quirky holes. This was a singles game and I was 10 points up at the turn. I didn't relent and suggest it might have been my best ever round considering the conditions and the lack of course knowledge. The Club Secretary came out to meet us when we arrived and handed us all shot savers and said you might not normally pay attention to these but I suggest you do on this occasion. I did and it was a life saver.

The next photo is off a little par 3 playing about 190 yards. Full driver got me to 30 yards straight into a wind. :D

When Sunday rolled around I was feeling very confident. The course was Hirsel Golf Club and it couldn't have been much more different to the day before. Glorious weather, the wind was non existent and the course was a proper parkland course. The format was a stableford shamble and me and my partner didn't disappoint. Playing off 15 and 17 we got 16 shots and wont 3&1 but we shot just 1 over. The team we were playing had a high handicapper and a very dubious 15 handicapper (He is single digits but his handicap is questionable - I'll leave it at that). We had to play out of our skin to win but luckily we did. The featured hole is a great little par 3, 93 yards off the edge of a little cliff probably playing 75 yards. One of the lads had a lip out for a near hole in one:

The last day saw us paired up again with the same format again the same team (luck of the draw eh?). We were playing at Roxburghe Golf Club. The weather was damp for the first few holes but after that cleared up nicely and again not a breathe of wind. We again played well but couldn't keep up with the other team and lost on the 17th hole even though we were only 4 over at the time. The kick in the groin coming on a par 3 where we would have needed a hole in 1 just to share the hole after they stiffed it to 2 feet. 3 birdies in 3 holes from us only stopped the inevitable. Again a really nice course with a very nice club house.

All in all a great weekend but wasn't nice to be on the losing team knowing how well I'd played. Some cracking courses though.

Good luck! Fingers crossed for a hole in 1 for you

I don't understand Texas Scramble. never played it so never really looked into it.

Texas Scramble - team game - usually 4 players.

Very simple - You all hit your tee shots, pick the best one, you all play from that persons position, and again, pick the best one etc etc - so basically you have 4 goes at every shot/putt etc.

Normally, over 18 holes, you MUST use 4 drives/tee shots each - i.e 16 tee shots, and then anyone's for the other 2 (floaters) - So it can get quite nervy if one person has a couple of tee shots still to take in the last couple of holes etc.

Good fun - no need to always hit great shots, just hole a putt here and there or hit a good one close etc for the team.

As a n00b Texas Scramble sounds kinda interesting although not actually tried it or got plans to do so :p

The main idea for me being as my shots are so variable between terrible and mediocre that it'd avoid getting annoyed by moving forward 2 yards between shots  I hadn't heard the 4 tee shots each bit before though.

Got my weekend golf booked up today, going back to the Woodlands Golf Course doing the Signature course on Friday (not played that before, but looks 'safer', at least at the start) and then Masters on Sunday which I played last Friday. Looking forward to it, went to the range on Tuesday and felt like maybe I'm getting somewhere with consistency but also got bored after playing on a proper course :p

Went back out for another 9 holes today, fair to say I got brought back down to earth :p

Scorecard

The afternoon didn't start so great as I was a bit late getting there so my warmup on the range was rushed. Got onto the 1st tee and topped my driver left into some bushes surrounding an electricity pylon. Playing three of the first tee never a good sign. A succession of dreadful shots followed including finding the green side bunker and I picked my ball up so as to keep up with the pace of play. I had another topped driver off the 3rd and somehow couldn't find the ball even though it hadn't gone very far, thankfully the last of my bad drives. Topped iron shots, including a dreadful 6i off the tee of the par 3 7th, would turn out to be the theme of the day. I just seem to have a mental block on hitting off real lies as opposed to the driving range mats.

Thankfully my afternoon was saved on the very short par 4 8th. I stroked a lovely little drive 180 yards and then hit my PW around 95 yards to within a couple of feet of the front pin position. I holed out for birdie and was delighted :D Proof to myself as much as anything that I can sometimes hit a good golf ball! Funny how one or two good shots can make up for the all the dross in the rest of the round. The other plus point was I wore my new shoes for the first time and didn't give them a second thought until after the round. Things I need to practice next time at the range, getting out of bunkers.

Edit: and just to cap the afternoon off jammed a finger in my trolley while collapsing it to put in the car

I chuckled a bit at the 3x bunker + 3 putt one :p

I played my 3rd round today, and for the first time ever hit an ok first drive off the tee! Followed that up with my first ever par on the 4th hole (par 3) and another bogey in the first half for my best ever half of 55 \o/

Then it kinda went downhill in the back half, 65 overall, several lost balls, at least once I hit the cap we impose of 8 shots way before putting. Not great. Lovely example, related to stephenb's somewhat is finally getting out of a bunker only to do a beautiful 6i shot straight into the next bunker.

Still, 120 overall beating my previous best by 7 and definitely improving.

And if stephenb is practicing getting out of bunkers I need to be practicing putting, some bad times there, managed a 5 putt  after getting on the green in 3 on a par 5! :(

Back again on Sunday, doing the course I did last Friday where I managed 127 and lost 11 balls!

funny round today.. Seafield - shorter course - Par 68.

Course has softened up so much with the rain and I just couldn't find my touch round the greens - chipped well, but just didn't get rewarded with the results...

Doubled 1 & 4 which ain't a great start playing off 9.....Lipped out 4 times as well.

77 less 9 for 68. Solid if not spectacular. Someone shot 69 - 7 for 62 today!!

Returned from Celtic Manor last night and all I can say is it's beaten us again :D

Some amazing golf played and also some terrible golf.

First day: Montgomery. playing off 12 and came in with 32 points saw me cut to 9 for the twenty ten. Montgomery was playing so so well. Amazing greens. Tough fairways and wicked rough. Happy with my scoring and only blobbed on one hole (17th) which unfortunately saw us loose our matchplay pairing 2 and 1.

Second Day: Twenty Ten. Started so well. The nerves were kicking in as the first tee was so busy. But a steady drive down the centre left me happy. Scored 16 points on the front 9 and playing so well. But then I crumbled. Hook after hook and if you've played the twenty ten all you find is water. Ended up only scoring 9 points on the back

Highlight of the round though was landing on the 18th green in 2. At 545 yards long I managed my best drive of the day to leave me 230 into the green. Over water too. 3 hybrid, 2 put, birdie. Gallery was full of people and a nice clap from them and shouts of great shot, as I walked to the green was a brilliant feeling.

Third Day: Roman Road. Some say the easier of the three but trust me the greens are the hardest of all three courses. Played off 10 and came in with 28 points.
Again highlight of this round was the Red Arrows flying over the course with colours on too . Apparently one of the pilots is a member of the Twenty Ten course so they always do it if they're flying over.

Overall I came third out of eight. Total of 85. Second 86 and first was 92 total points.
Glad I'm off this week as I need to rest

Just got back from my 4th game and got my worst ever score :( I counted 131 on the score card but my watch (Garmin) said 129 so need to check where the discrepancy is and try and remember but either way it's my worst round. The Masters course at Woodlands is definitely harder than the Signature but it's only 1 difference on par.

But! I hit some great shots frankly, really feels like the scorecard doesn't reflect the game I played :p My playing partner commented that my weighting/pace for the long putts was good, and it was frankly, I was overhitting it on the closer ones though that kinda ruins it. Did have maybe 4 putts that lipped out which is so annoying...

Best was the 17th, par 3 with a big lake to an elevated green with 3 bunkers in front, horrible  Went driver for distance (I don't hit anything far at all still) and got it over the water but straight into a bunker, still dry at least. Got it out the bunker on my first attempt, definitely getting better there, but it went over the green fairly deep into the french on the other side. Decided to putt it anyway, because as mentioned my pacing on the long stuff from the fringe was on point and I was even thinking that but I did not expecting it to go perfectly into the pin/hole for par! Happy days :D:p

Congrats to Rory - FEDEX Champ.

Scottie was awful from bunkers this week - like 1 in 7 sand saves. But Rory was all guns blazing from the start and impressive.

Got to love the guy - Win Tour Champs, and saves the PGA tour! :D What a year for him...

you have to feel that Scheffler's poor play was down to Rory's pressure

Yikes - Done deal and gone for Cam Smith...

Scary stuff but I assume he's betting on the fact he's exempt from the majors for the next 10 years and this will hold up.

Masters will be the big one as that's technically an "invitational" event.
The Australian will be joined in the event, from 2-4 September, by rising star Joaquin Niemann, the 23-year-old world number 19 from Chile.

Smith and Niemann are among six new faces competing in the 48-strong field in Massachusetts in what is the fourth LIV event of its inaugural series.

They include Australia's Marc Leishman, 38, who was runner-up at the 2015 Open at St Andrews as well as Americans Harold Varner III, 32, and Cameron Tringale, 35, plus India's top-ranked pro Anirban Lahiri, 35.
